Great video. I'd really like to see you do one about Legendary Licks that you think are hard, but really they are hard, but you think they're easy, and really they are easy for that guy who used to live down the street from your apartment when you were going through that ugly break-up with that crazy girl who stole your tv and then called the cops and then the cops took your side but turns out you had an outstanding warrant from 2 counties over from that one time your ex-best friend took too many xanax and punched a glass window out and since you were drunk you got charged with disorderly conduct but you never showed up for court because you couldn't take off work and really you didn't have any money to pay the fines anyway. I know that video has been done to death on KZread already, but I'd be interested to hear your take on that classic concept.

I’m sure someone else has mentioned this, but Andy plays “Every Breath You Take” in a very easy way. You just don’t barre and hold down all the notes in the chords...simply fret the low notes on the 6th string with your index finger, then move the index fingertip from the 6th string to the 3rd string to complete the arpeggio and then back down to the 6th string to start the cycle again. It has puzzled players for years, but Andy revealed this simple trick long ago...the same trick applies to “Message In A Bottle”...

Came here to say that. Andy moves the index finger for the arpeggios. But the Fm9 still kills my hands because it's still a 4 fret stretch at the long end of the board and all of them are still hard to play cleanly. So to say he plays it in a " very easy way"... Not really.

here's the thing though...YES..we see him move his fingers around in the vids and live performances... and there is no doubt that he plays it that way to save hand strength...BUT...... when you listen to the original recording, you can clearly hear that the lower notes have RING on them indicating that they are being held throughout the chord. i suspect he recorded it with the full chords and made the decision AFTERWARDS to try to economize the way he would play it for live performance. so both ways are COMPLETELY in play here...

Westin Mcclister No. When I heard it for the first time, I thought it was going to be tricky too. And oh it was! I STILL have a hard time with it. I think part of what makes it a challenge is, in addition to alternate picking it, which is how John Frusciante played it, it's the hammer-ons and pull-offs. I tend to think of it as quarter note triplets superimposed over 16ths. Challenging still is how to get the right feel and keep it from sounding like straight arpeggios.

Although I'm a bassist, not a guitar player, I would say the song that drove me insane was Get Lucky by Daft Punk. I agreed to perform it with one of my friend's bands for a show they were doing. I'd only been playing bass for less than a year, but I thought it was an easy riff and that I could learn it in a few days. Oh boy was a wrong. Part of the difficulty was the fact that I also was supposed to sing it because the singer of the band said that he just couldn't hit the high notes, but it was so difficult to focus on playing this bassline I barely knew and singing the song. The funny thing was, the show was cancelled last minute due to bad weather conditions, so after hours of me stressing out and trying to learn the part, I didn't even get to play it.

John Sullivan Oh these tab books are full of flaws. Sometimes it feels like a guy who made them never really sat down and tried to play the songs. They usually make stuff much harder sometimes even unplayable for some reason.

@@kkarx Yup, as a bass player I agree: I've seen tabs that go all the way up and down the fretboard, when the song is played by going up the strings without moving your fretting hand at all.

Wow, what a guitar player you are! I have a strange fascination for guitar videos even though I can't play a note....er, a lick. Though, with your videos I keep getting distracted by all those flashing, flickering LED lights on your keyboard. The sequence blows my mind!

I mean, yeah. If you already have good alternate picking it doesn’t sound very difficult because what’s hard about it is the chords which you don’t really recognize just hearing it.

Each chord change changes which direction you pick, thats what got me. First set starts on a down stroke, second on the up. Break it down real slow and get the feel for making sure you alternate pick every picked note, you play with the most efficient path, and you can go faster.

Assuming you are talking about snow: you can always start on a down stroke because the hammer on pull off thing is twice as long as the other notes so you start and end that part with a down stroke

I guessed back in black as soon as I saw it, but I thought it was gonna be the main riff, not the bridge. Getting the main riff's bend so close to the nut was super difficult as a new player

Actually if you watch Wendy play her part of Purple Rain, it’s intense on your fingers if you play the Eb portion as x681086 because you’re barring the 8th fret with your second finger and trying to arch your pinky enough to get the 10th fret. Even if you tried to fret the 8th string notes with your second and third fingers, then the pinky, it’s intense. Not only that, she has a funky F shape she only plays once in the song at the beginning THATS a stretch as it’s 135211. It’s mostly because the song was written on piano.
