Something not mentioned yet is that the ball is often travelling up to 80mph when the keepers are attempting to cover ground to get to them. Phenomenal in my humble opinion!

Yes! This is not really related to that but I hate when people say basketball players are better athelets because they can score on so little basket but try to kick soccer ball with ur feet while running almost full sprint. Hand eye coordination is much easier task to learn than foot eye coordination.

And to add to that the have to be able to ‘Switch On’ at a moments notice as they have long periods far from the action. As one who play a lot as keeper that’s one of the hardest things to do is keep your muscles warm and ready and stop your mind from wandering when you have nothing to do. Most of the training drills keepers do is focused on reaction time and recovery speed(I.e. time to recover from one save and be able to make another) being tall helps but I have known a few good small keepers. The one big bonus of being a professional Goalkeeper is that your career can last well into your 40s due to less overall stress, wear and tear of the body than an outfielder. Alas I never got past amateur level maybe in another life I will be a sports star?

Rene Higuita A legendary keeper from Colombia’s first golden generation of the 90’s. It’s a very interesting team to look into because of the tragedy’s of the team, since they never reached their potential because of the violence in the country, leading to Higuita being imprisoned during the 94 World Cup and the team was eliminated early causing Atlético Nacional and Colombian football legend, Andres Escobar, to be shot to death. To this day, as someone who has a lot of Colombian friends here in 🇲🇽, they will tell u this violences is still present, especially in derby’s

As a lot of people have probably said, the entire ball needs to cross the line, it doesn't matter if its on or off the ground when it does. But also, the saves where the keeper is using his head instead of his hands is because his own team passed it back to him. A keeper can't use his hands if a team mate intentionally passes him the ball.

I was a goalkeeper, and I had brilliant saves and ridiculous blunders. At the lowest amateur level, to be honoust. On a good day, when you keep everything out, I enjoy watching the opponents getting frustrated with each other. Left, right, down and high. First close range, and as desperation grows, the long (chanceless) distance shots come. From the other side, losing because of my butter hands, or loosing 13-0 also accured.

Everybody already mentioned goalie can't use their hands if the ball's coming from a team mate, so I'll just add that a goalie can't use their hands outside of the bigger box on the field. Once he's out of that box, he has to use his feet (and head) like everybody else. Great reaction video, glad to see young man in yellow got to see the bicycle kick!

Something nobody ever mentions regarding Higuita's scorpion save. The whistle had already been blown, had he missed and the ball hit the net, it wouldn't have counted anyway. If the whistle hadn't been blown?, he'd have never attempted it. That said, it was a great save regardless and looks awesome. Obviously.

The whole ball has to cross over the line, it doesn't matter if it's in the air or on the ground. As long as the entire ball passes the line. Most big leagues now use something Goal Line Technology, with cameras and trackers that track the ball and whether it crossed the line. If it's crossed the line, the ref gets a signal to his wrist signifying a goal. There's been cases where it looks like the whole ball crossed the line, but there was maybe a couple centimeters that was still touching the line.

Every goalie is amazing and have all made some amazing saves at some point in their careers, but I have to say, maybe the best, Italy's Gianluigi BUFFON

Nice reaction guys. The full circumference of the ball needs to pass the line to be considered a goal. The same goes to any lines on the field. 3:23 The goalkeeper did not use his hands because his own team player returned the ball to him (risky pass). When you return the ball using your feet to your goalkeeper, he is not allowed to use his hands. I think this rule was implemented several years ago to avoid winning teams to just play with his goalkeeper over and over. Them passing the ball, and the goalkeeper using his hands and passing to another defense, and this last one returning to the goalkeeper, and so on, and on. By applying this rule, the other team can put pressure by attacking, and the goalkeeper is forced to use his feet and push the game forward.

@3:55 - The 'entire' ball must cross the line for it to be a goal and/or to be considered 'out of play'. That means that even if an inch of that ball is still over the white bit of line....it isn't a goal nor would it be considered out on the boundary lines of the filed.

The fancy goalkeeper’s “Scorpion save” was the notorious Colombian goalkeeper against England in a friendly. So we’d rather not mention it. Rene Higuita’s the guy’s name. He was infamous for doing weird things in goal. I think it’s Jamie Redknapp who’s trying to score but I can’t remember.

The red blew for a free kick, so it was technically a dead ball. Though I reckon he was mad enough to do it in open play anyways lol

on 5'53 you saw an old save..it was england v brazil at the world cup in 1970...if you watch it all whenn the ball was crosses the england keeper gordon banks was on his near post,in the time it took for the ball to get to peles head he had to get to his back post, pele(the GOAT) was text book in heading the ball to the ground which makes this save even more impressive..if you watch closely pele was even celebrating scoring when gordon banks performed his miracle
