Sucks it didn't catch on. The sequel wasn't as good as this game either. I loved the way you could pick which part of the body you attacked with. The combo system was way ahead of its time too. If you were smart enough you could overlap commands to create custom combos.

David White the sequel failed in many ways even though it did try to bring back certain elements from the first game. Take one simple example, the attacks. The second one had names and inputs that didn't go well with what was being shown on screen where as in the original many things actually made sense. Bull Horns involved two arms reaching out, Slash Kick had inputs that mimicked a jump and downwards kick, etc. but the sequel failed in that. It made me not enjoy the combat. So many other disappointing things: lack of serus, bad voice acting, boring world, enemy variety and appearance was lacking (they had no charm and didn't seem to fit in the world so much as they were just thrown in for the heck of it to me), armor didn't change character's appearance, awful stage design, etc

it was the aethetic of the first that wasn't reached in the sequel. the level of intensity. the quality and style of the sounds, and music. you're on edge the whole time, truly involved in the plot, the game was a real thriller. idk why it wasn't more mainstream

One of my most favorite and memorable games ever played (the first game, not the sequel). The story was heart wrenching, the music was epic (composed by Michiru Oshima) and combat system that was creative/fun/unique. The game was very much a "tragedy" (in story)--and one of the only video games that almost made me cry at parts, many years ago. It's very underrated and I'd put it in my top 3 most favorite video game releases of all time, hands down.

What I love about Legend of Legaia is their combat system doesn't throw their early game techniques under the bus. A low level tech can be combined to make a strong combo or sprinkle it at the beginning or the end to get a damage boost. They may not be the big damage makers late game but they are still useful.

TORNADO FLAME!

I remember figuring out how to beat this little bird when I was in grade-schooler in 1998 or 1999. I couldn't read English much back then, and I randomly found a way to beat it with Warrior Icon (counterattack with certain chances) and won with luck (frequently triggered Counter) equipped on Gala (party members at level 35 - 40). After I won, I screamed like mad, lmao. I also learned to love English thanks to this game. Great memory

Quite possibly the most underrated video game ever made.

Goddamn, the combo system has still yet to be recreated in modern times and still stands the test of time! I LOVED the feeling of finding new moves whenever I unlocked more slots to attack

Indeed. Today this type of turned combat gameplay would be greatly well received by a lot of people because Legend of Legaia its pretty much the only RPG that has something as this. Its an really really old fresh system that has SO MUCH potential... The things you could do, giving people the thing: "Yeah you have combos each turn, but the game doesnt tell you anything, you try stuff and figure it out, and in some parts you can get books or NPCs that teaches them, but you can unlock every single one of them by trying combinations" So good...

Something about hiding a secret boss behind a "random encounter" scared the junk out of me as a kid. Nothing makes your heart go faster than hearing the regular battle music you expected suddenly shift to a boss theme. (Disclaimer: I know it's not "random" because you have to run on a certain tile, but you get the point)

I remembered as a kid I was in this forest, and explored at a lower level just to find more items. I traveled to the top and suddenly heard Boss music. Boy did I learn my lesson that day lol.

I remember finding this boss by chance. I already had beaten the game, and I was just bored visiting old locations trying to find unopened chests. Then this boss popped. I lost my first 2 fights against him.

I found this boss by chance as a kid, was lost, hadnt beaten the game yet and got destroyed. took me FOREVER to bring it down. theres another hidden random super op boss like this in final fantasy ix, i think towards the end of disc 1 or the start of disc 2

@@TheBrowniesOwn There's actually several hidden bosses in FF9 tbh. Hades and Ozma just to name a couple I remember.

Love this game so much, but cool trick is to use spike fish flute to escape, re-engage then use Jedo to insta-kill.

I love that the bird negates magic use and then proceeds to flip the fuck out as attacks. It's just a knock down, drag-out fight with a big crazy bird.

I feel bad for Gala, the warrior monk turned utility for the team.

Criminally underrated RPG

No lie I remember walking in the world was painfully slow and the monsters do mad dmg for no reason 😂 ahhh good times

This boss suprised the hell out of me when the music came out of nowhere.

It's 2023 and I'm STILL wondering why they decided to not include the Super Arts on the arts list. 😕

Man i can still remember letting the game continue over night so i can spam Slots for points ... when i came back from school i could buy all the needed items. Such an underrated Game i wish should be Remade someday. Simple, Fast, and Hard if you don´t know what you are doing!

I found this boss because of a magazine. When i played I was a kid and didn't speak english. It took a lot of effort to beat him.

I can't remember the item name, but I threw a few of them on Noa and did her Miracle Art. Cooked that bird in one combo.

The only other rpg i know that use a combo system is Lisa the painful, and that game is a indie 2d horror rpg game

If memory serves me correctly, if you have 1 character using a mana restore item on themselves Lapis keeps using his mana drain instead of attacking. .....

That would be awesome but sadly lapis first move makes everyone's mp a total of 0 . But that strategy works well on Angra Mainyu in FFX-2.

There's a trick where u run away from lapis first time and use jedo in ur second encounter, the detail is a bit too long for me to type but not a complicated trick

I’m waiting for someone to do just an item usage montage for the sounds they make.

The real challenge of this game is maxing all the stats via the diff waters that gives perma stat and maxing the level of the serus.. :D

Awesome fight!! How do you do for Lapis combos doent het you that much?? He makes you like 300 per hit and he makes me like 600 to 700 damsge per hit. How you reduced the damage??

@@lisi03822 Spirit beforehand, all the Delilas' use their special every 3rd attack, but if you just wanna tank the damage you get a rainbow jewel in the cave system beforehand which halves all elemental damage to you.

You can use a flute and escape, then go back in and refill your MP. Then you can use magic to instantly kill him.

I guess is that you can use luminous jewel and multiple Shield Elixirs then Lapis will do poor damage to you and then give someone lots of Power Elixirs to raise their attack for an easy fight since those can stack and they last for the entire battle or the person faints.

Level + Wonder elixir. Every elixir you use increases ALL stats. But battling lapis at low level is a real pain. And some have used the escape + jedo trick to make this battle easier.

@@elitefdc2171 Speed Chain remedy this. Gala is a powerhouse once all three characters have the same amount of Art blocks, since he has better stats than both Vahn and Noa. He is pretty weak on the early game, but a monster in the endgame, both as a physical fighter and spellcaster; pretty much the polar opposite of Noa.

What's the lore behind Lapis?

@@aibrahim6071 You can get the Point Card from upstairs in the shop in Rim Elm immediately after you leave Rim Elm. After you get it, each time you spend money you get points on the card. Spend enough money and you can get enough points to kill pretty much anything using the point card. When you enter battle you will be able to use the Point Card from your Items menu.

But it can only deal 9999 damage per turn. Lapis have at least 40k HP. Unless you are well-prepared for his barrage, you won't be able to use all of its points

"Unpredictable Behaviour". means your hero is uncontrollable in Berserk status (High Attack). Doing random arts to enemies, yet sometimes he/she only run to enemy and doing nothing.

when playing this game and first time encounter this i said this monster is really hard is it my level is low? so this is a secret boss after all so thats why haha edit i never pay attention in theme as a kid all i know that time boss is need to encounter as quest or need to find it not on random fight hahaha

I hated fighing lapis

This boss has some vicious attack, 8 hits!? And he does'nt play fair. Badly the battle begins: "Ambush" + "Lapis Wave" (whole party mp=0). Why don't you play like a man, Lapis? Cheat does'nt whorth it. Keep going brave warriors, keep going!!@ Vahn (the warrior) - Noa (the thief) - Gala (the fighter). I'm crazy to play this game again.

Blocks are random. Using spirit increases the block rate but then that's a turn you aren't doing anything else.

Attack randomly with between 0 to 15 arts. (no super/hyper/miracle arts). Stacks War God Icon for up to 30 Arts! Not that you need it if you can kill this thing of course.
