I must say Tom Quayle is not only a fantastic guitar player, which I already knew, but also a fantastic teacher. The way he conveys his knowledge with patience, simplicity and clarity, is just phenomenal and a rare gift indeed. It is very rare that someone is both a great player and a great teacher at the same time, but Tom is.

I like Tom Quayle so much :) I've been playing guitar for 3 decades, every time I see a video where he teaches something I run to my studio to see if I do things right. best teacher a guitarist can have free on youtube :) ... man we live in cool time to be a musician. thanks for the video.

Even with all of his amazing skill Tom somehow manages to break down what he's teaching into easily understanable pieces and make you feel like you can do it too. Very inspiring stuff!

I've rewatched this many times.

What a great guy - we all know he can blow through Giant Steps & Spain etc at a million mph but he is so patient and articulate and understanding of basic problems despite being a planet further on. Total respect.

Theres this saying "Those that teach,can't" Well, that doesn't apply at all here. Tom is just as good of a teacher as he is a player and that is a very rare quality. What a great guy.

Got to see Tom when he did a clinic here in Manila with Martin.. A really down to earth guy... A really great player and reminds me so much of the late great Allan Holdsworth... Was also lucky enough to have a picture with Tom... Hehehe...

Tom's a total monster on the guitar, million percent right about that left hand technique, everything just becomes easier to play once you start getting it down.

Best explanation I've heard. I needed to hear this. Thanks guys! Maybe I can get that stretch with my smallish hands in the nearish future.

Legato beginners should start the 1-3-5 shape at the 12th fret and gradually move the shape down 1 fret at time, to get the hand and fingers used to the stretch.

Amazing lessons!! Basic are indeed important, I’ve always been saying : small detail make huge improvements!! Always having problems with my little finger because he is really small !! I guess the more I practice the more I will understand the mechanics of my hand !! Don’t get me wrong , I’m really capable but those small details your will get me even better ! And honestly I’m quite exiting !! Cheers 🤘

What a teacher!?

Tom Quayle may be the most articulate guitar teacher I’ve ever seen.

have to say this has really helped me. Been playing guitar for around 15 years and when i started to learn the caged system i went from playing pentatonics to playing more open scale shapes and 3 note per string stuff. i don't think i took enough time to analyse my technique and as a result my technique suffered but just hearing Tom talk about the hand forming a relaxed I've totally changed how I play and it is way more easy to rip around the neck.

Yep sometimes we can learn everything but the basics. It's great to have someone remind us that with few simple changes our playing can become more relaxed. After doing this video I've been placing my thumb behind the neck more intentionally and it has improved my left hand fretting a lot.

Tip Top.

Mr. Quayle is surely one of the best guitar teachers in the world.

Move everything up a couple of frets to make the stretch slightly easier. Move down when the stretch can be done more comfortably.

Good advice. Also, start on high E string and then week by week move down to the lower strings.

I have a problem: my thumb wants to rest against my index finger or between it and the middle finger. The more I bring my thumb against my middle finger the more strain I get in the wrist and the more flat my index finger becomes (almost laying across the bottom 3 strings). Is it normal?

Interesting, don't remember seeing that kind of left hand technique before. I'm no expert to give you advice on this so I would suggest finding a good teacher and working on this. As Tom says in this video, there shouldn't be any strain on your hands while playing, so it's good to take a look at it before you do any serious damage on your hands. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately there isn’t many great teachers out there because all they are concerned about is money and I’ve seen this many times and this is the problem and why people would rather watch on you tube for help because it’s comfortable and they aren’t just after money instead of helping and you can keep pausing going back etc much easier 👍

Nice video, learned a lot. Guitar over the left leg would work a lot better for his hand position.😊

Tom forgot to mention though pull off isn't simply just lifting off the frets but he actually employ a downwards clawing motion when he pulled off and that's especially hard to execute like he did with his pinky while his ring finger is still on the fret, talk about total finger independence...

Tom Quayle is a great player, but I think his legato sounds so fluid also because of his hybrid picking technique.

Yeah it's a combination of great legato technique and amazing hybrid picking. Even though he claims he's bad at it, he's also a great alternate picker. :)

Tom seems like a cool guy. Is he from Birmingham? I have a friend from there and he sounds just like Tom.

I’m afraid I don’t know where in UK he is from. But what I can tell is that he’s a super fun guy that takes his craft seriously but doesn’t take himself seriously.

I mean, no i didn't: This is definetly well explained in different topics, but I also could think that Tom could have talk about his note combination patterns decision, just for example. I hope this had help lots of people, EVEN SO, explain Legato in it's own could have been done by other people and Tom could take it to another level, ykwim? Greetings anyway

I would guess more than three. His dad is a great jazz guitarist so work ethic probably runs in the family.

I think you're missing the point...

Guthrie Govin gives the exact opposite advice about force/finger pressure when generating notes. I love Govin but Tom has a better approach.

If you have the link of Guthrie's legato please share it here. I haven't found any other video of him talking about legato, it's only about his trademark tapping and improvs.

the secret is, Tom has been stretched his fingers for long time so it is not that instant to get the fingers relax while hammering/pulling off on the fret

Fuck the legatos, I just want to have this guy diction. He speaks so well and in a concise way. I want to learn that first.
