Legal Eagle Ultralight, Part 103 Legal Ultralight Aircraft, Leonard Milholland's Legal Eagle.

Спорт

www.ultralightflyer.com - Legal Eagle Part 103 Legal Ultralight Aircraft by Leonard Milholland - produced in kit form by J&N Bolding Enterprises of Baytown, Texas and intended for amateur construction.
The Legal Eagle is so named because it is capable of being built in legal compliance with the United States FAR 103 Ultralight Vehicles regulations, even when equipped with a four stroke engine.
The Legal Eagle features an open cockpit and is powered by a 30 hp (22 kW) Half VW engine.
The design features a fuselage of welded 4130 steel tubing, mated to an all-wood wing made from spruce. The struts and tail surfaces are made from 6061 T6 aluminium tubing. The flying surfaces are covered with doped aircraft fabric. The rear fuselage is normally left as an open truss structure to save weight and to ensure that the aircraft does not exceed the FAR 103 maximum speed of 55 knots (102 km/h; 63 mph). Like the fuselage, the taildragger landing gear is sprung steel.
The aircraft has been developed into several variants of the basic design including the XL version for larger pilots and a two-seat ultralight trainer and Light-sport aircraft.[6][7][8]
Legal Eagle
Basic model with a 244 lb (111 kg) empty weight, powered by a 30 hp (22 kW) Half VW engine

Double Eagle
Model with two seats in side-by-side configuration with a 385 lb (175 kg) empty weight and a 900 lb (408 kg) gross weight. Designed as an ultralight trainer and Light Sport Aircraft. Powered by a 60 hp (45 kW) Volkswagen air-cooled engine giving a 70 mph (113 km/h) cruise speed.

I believe the time has come for the 103 breed of aircraft to switch to electric. They are so wonderful machines, and they will become even more magical. Just like the RC airplanes did.

From a technical standpoint, you are probably right, or soon will be, as batteries improve. But regulators move very slowly. This plane was called the *legal* eagle because some sacrifices were made to stay 103-compliant. www.wired.com/2015/09/blame-faa-blunder-lack-electric-airplanes/ is mostly talking about slightly larger planes, but the same resistance is there. The only thing the FAA has said about electric motors is that batteries will count against the already-tight structural weight instead of the fuel allotment.

Yeah - if everything is working as it should, an airplane cannot fall out of the sky. As long as the wings and tail are still attached, you're gliding. If the engine is still working, you're flying. I'm afraid of heights too, but knowing this about aircraft made my fear of flying disappear.

I am a 60 year old former private pilot who used to own a Cessna 172 with a couple of other guys. Unfortunately I became disabled, lost my pilots license and eventually my job. I have been thinking about an ultralight aircraft for a long time. I am physically able to fly such a small plane (actually I'm physically able to fly a general aviation aircraft, but can't pass the FAA physical) I would like to get into something that does not require a license and doesn't cost over $10,000. I would really like to get back in the air while I still can. Any ideas on where to look and how to get started would be greatly appreciated.

@FooBar Maximus Anything that meets FAR Part 103 can be built by whomever with whatever materials available. So yes, if you know of a local handyman or mechanic that would be willing and able to build this you can absolutely hand them the plans and let them tear into it. Any aircraft manufacturer or FBO in your area that even would be wiling to undertake this would almost certainly charge you far more than the average person would think of as a sane amount of money. So you're stuck with Billy Bob or Juan or whoever you have locally.

The 4 stroke VW is pretty reliable if built properly. Also, the glide ratio of the plane is pretty good so if you have good pilot skills you should be able to land it in the event of an engine stoppage or failure. That said, you are defying gravity so any safety margin you can build in will be helpful.

Assuming you will buy most of your parts new (from places like A/C Spruce or Wicks), you will spend a good $3500 or more on the airframe. If you buy a ready-built motor and prop, etc, it will run you another $4000. But, if you are good at scrounging stuff, and can build your own motor, you can build one a bit cheaper.
