There's my bass mentor, Abe Laboriel! It was an honor and privilege to have in-person, 1-on-1 lessons with him for a semester, while I was a music student in Los Angeles.

You can see how crucial Abe's role is at 31:57, when the bass drops out for several minutes , due to tech difficulties! band had to go to a drum solo

Wow, Look at these young men! Was a big fan back in the day, how I miss the times.
A guitarist whose original music is even better than even his virtuosic playing. He’s probably my favourite of this genre.

Thank you for watching the video. I learned once again that CP70/80 had MIDI specifications. If you think about it, that's the era.
Came for Ritenour and ended up watching Laboriel. One of the best live performances of his I've ever seen. Kudos to his belt for not snapping throughout the show!

Vinnie's had a big impact on me too, but mainly in the form of reminding me just how very, very far I am from mastery of the instrument.
loved the Earth Run album, some beautiful melodies on this, especially water from the moon.

So weird to see Lee playing a Strat. 🎸 And as usual, Lee has an exceptional group of musicians to back him up. And what a great audience. I think these Japanese audiences are very appreciative of Jazz and Mr. Ritenour and friends are certainly masters of their craft. As a musician myself I too appreciate just how incredibly "tight" this group is. Much love to the producers and crew who put this performance on video for future generations to see.

I'm sorry, I only have this. Sorry for the late reply.
Just noticed Lee bears a bit of a resemblance to Pat Metheny. The schnoz and the grin full of teeth.Their music and playing styles and improvising are quite distinct though. Interesting to see what folks were playing in the mid 1980s, look like Lee was running a stereo rig w/ two 1x12'' Seymour Duncan amps, with what looks like a 3rd power amp underneath the Fx rack in between them, plus what looks like and American Standard Fender Strat. Don grunion w/ the ubiquitous Yamaha CP70 electric piano which seems that is MIDI-ying some synthesizers (perhaps the uber ubiquitous Yamaha DX7?). Thanks for sharing this top shelf Cross Over Jazz music.

This is his brother Don Grusin: another fantastic keyboard player
Is there non musician who like this music?!? :p
Ritenour is the epitome of Fuzak; beautifully performed garbage. And as for the guitar tech stage... Is he such a god, he can't even tune his own guitars? It might have added some interest to the gig... Marvellous to hear Vinnie. Arguably his best period in some ways....
Much to mainstream
they are using a backing track as i hear keyboard melodies that nobody visible is playing. also in the 1984 "Rit Special" there are some very obvious backing vocals that nobody visible is singing. but how did they do it in 1986? i googled it and there were some multitrack players like Tascam 38, 8 track tape recorder, or they could have used some midi solution. which one was it? was it really feasible bringing a tape-based backing track solution on tour? sounds like a lot of hassle plus the tapes would definitely degrade with repeated playback - wouldn't they? also what about the costs? does anyone know? i was alive then, but not a touring musician (i was 5 :)
what the hell is the keyboardist playing? looks like a fender rhodes but with midi capabilities

And does not play like Dave. Guess Dave was recording the soundtrack to the Goonies at this time.
Need to turn up the guitar (its Lee Ritenour, for fucks sake!!!) and turn down the cheesy keyboard
Easy listening turn jazz very boring. Vinny calaiuta is a bright spot though.
Odd music, and it is not properly jazz either. Wonder why they get so emotional and likes to create music like this.
