Mothers are still leaving their families for economic reasons in the present day. Not really a big surprise that this would be the only option for an unwed mother in 1911 Ireland. Not a matter of “judgement,” just a lack of knowledge of the circumstances. The grandparents took the little guy in, which not everyone did. A lot of illegitimate children ended up in orphanages or foster homes. Some were sold to farmers as labourers or domestic servants when they were old enough to work. Child labour is still an issue in many countries.
Indeed, before rushing to judgment, we need to do some detective work first to figure out what were the circumstances of the mother. Still, it's a heartbreaking trauma that was passed down from 1 generation to the next.
