Pieces of me is my anthem...The way Queen Ledisi hold the notes and moves in her range, uses the mic and maintains vibrato..please no one else has a sound like her...JHud know real talent too...ijs

People, including myself have been raving about Ledisi for years. This woman not only EMBODIES R&B she can do gospel, jazz, blues, pop...She's amazing, but when it comes to the R&B there is no one out like her and not to say J-Hud isn't but when you listen to Ledisi it's like the days of Gladys and Patti and those R&B ladies who where raised up on soul music. She's just not selling herself to the big machine that wants female artist to be half-naked and singing about nothing, and we know who the queen of that is, I won't mention her name, not out of fear of the FLEAhive but out of the fact that I can't stand her even more when she did Ledisi the way that she did her by going behind Ledisi's back to John Legend and Common to let her sing at the Grammy's. The back story is, and was all over social media when she did it, Ledisi played the late Great Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson in the Movie Selma, and sang Take My Hand, Precious Lord in the film. She was set to sing the song at the Grammys that year and was all excited about the whole experience because that would have been her big moment to shine and get a bigger audience. So COPYonce was trying to promote her album which wasn't doing as well as she'd like, inflated record sells by her team LimeAide was the album. So she took it upon herself, as she always does to other female artist, make it all about her used her politics and demanded that John Legend and Common, let her sing instead of Ledisi. See Ledisi, Common and John Legend where to perform and as part of the film Selma in which John and Common where nominated. So John, punked out and told her that she could sing "Take my hand Precious Lord" in which she was also going to add one of her songs from the LIMEade album. Well poor Ledisi was told she couldn't take the stage and sing the song that she had just sang in the film that she was a part of the cast. Social Media went HAM on COPYonce, but of course she had most of her FLEAhive to back her up saying things like "Who is Ledisi, never heard of her." and "They picked the right one to sing, because nobody want to hear Ledisi"....just negative feedback. Well Ledisi sat right there in the audience and watched this spectacle...They said she even cried when she found out. Like the trooper she is, she performed Precious Lord Take my hand a week later at a concert function and blew it out the water. Many people posted clips of her and made the comparison that Ledisi embodied that song and COPYonce had nothing on her and some of these comments where coming from FLEAonce's fanbase. But it shows how dark skin, and full figured women get looked down upon in the industry and people like FARTonce can get whatever they want, until the people don't want them. Ledisi spoke of the incident months later and said she had no hard feelings and that she knows how the business works. She did go on to do great things by performing to sold out shows performing Nina Simone hits and got rave reviews. She's amazing.

That's how the music industry is but what God has for her it's all in God's timing....the first I heard her was in philly during her lost & found album in July, 2008 at Penn Landing free concert...she is excellent.

I could see every person, conversation, emotion, and deception in your comment. Whoa! Thank you (?) for unpacking that event. It allows others to see the divine providence of God's timing and Ledisi's resilience, professionalism, and class.

It's all about looks in this Industry. Beyonce and Rihanna got the looks everybody want to see. It doesn't matter if you can sing or not. As long as you can hold a note. And they will do the rest.

I absolutely love her. An amazing artist that doesn’t get ALL the recognition that she deserves. Beautiful

Period....I've seen her so many times I love her so much

I heard Ledisi for the first time at a small, mostly empty restaurant/bar on California and Dividadero in San Francisco in the mid nineties. I was immediately blown away, and could not believe for my life how most of the other patrons did not even stop talking amongst themselves during her performance. I saw her many times after that over the years before she finally broke through to mainstream national success. Mark my words, she is one of the great american singers, regardless of whether or not she reaches the pinnacle of fame and recognition. I only wish she could promote her early catalog, some of which is fantastic.

Saw her there too--what was the name of that place?? Used to see her regularly at the Elbo Room on Valencia & 17th. Knew she was a star even then.
