Led Zeppelin formed in 1968 and went on to become one of the most influential, innovative, and successful groups in modern music, having sold more than 300 million albums worldwide. The band rose from the ashes of The Yardbirds, when Jimmy Page brought in John Bonham, John Paul Jones, and Robert Plant to tour as The New Yardbirds. In 1969, Led Zeppelin released its self-titled debut which was produced by Page, as were all the subsequent albums. It marked the beginning of a 12-year reign, during which the group was widely considered to be the biggest and most innovative rock band in the world.

Ahead of their time...the harmonica track was recorded, then played backwards with echo. The drums were recorded in the lobby of an old mansion with microphones hanging from the second floor staircase. The guitar tracks were recorded, then the tempo was altered. This is why Led Zeppelin rarely played this song live. And when they did it wasn't the same.

There's an interesting anecdote about those drums. Zep had rented a big house to record and had moved Bonham's drum kit temporarily into the stairwell as they were settling in. Bonzo at some point started pounding away just to pass the time, and it created this tremendous echo, so they decided to record right there in the stairwell.

I’ve thought long and hard about this song and album. We have four individuals who are gifted beyond imagination coming together at the height of their abilities and reworked this blues song , taking it to outer space. The groove on this song is utterly fantastic. And became the blueprint for all serious bands thereafter. Sit back and take it in.

Bob? In '71 I was 7 years old also. I my brother (who was 7 years older), enjoyed listening to Led Zeppelin. Being he was in the next room, naturally I enjoyed listening to his tracks. I was hooked; especially Led Zeppelin. "When the levee breaks" doesn't take a mind reader to know the epitome of true, classic rock songs. Jon Bonham insisted that his percussion be recorded in the hallway of an English castle. How ingenuous could that be? It will take a while (if any) to meet the standards of Led Zeppelin. Ah, ah, ah, ah Ah, ah, ah, ah Goin' I'm goin' to Chicago Goin' to Chicago Sorry, but I can't take you, ahhh Goin' down, goin' down now Goin' down, goin' down now Goin' down, goin' down Goin' down, goin' down. If you want an education (meant in a nice sense) just go back over the USA and UK charts and pick songs and bands that made it into the top 20 or 10. Then investigate the bands/singers further. I'm sure you'll find a ton of stuff you had forgotten or were unaware of. A possible example. I don't know if you've heard of the band Focus (saw them in Bracknell, UK back in the seventies) but one track of theirs always makes me smile: Hocus Pocus. It's simultaneously, brilliant, bizarre and hilarious. It has recently come to the fore a little because it was featured in the film "Baby Driver".

One of best rock tracks ever made 👏
The best of all time song greatest rock band ever
The very best Blues Rock, pure genius in performance. Once lived within walking distance of the Mississippi River in South Louisiana and when the river rose up the levee this song always came to mind. Bonham often imitated never achieved.
I've listened to this song more times than i can calculate, but I'll never stop being totally blown away by John's drumming, the ghost notes on the bass drum and so damn tasty
I adore this Amaizing Song. The beautiful taste and feeling of flying for a long time. It sounds fantastically incomparable. It's like you are in anorher dimension or out of our time. That's exactly how it feels. Such a powerful, dense and at the same time melodious, sonorous folk-rock. GREAT SONG!!! BRAVO!!!💎💎💎💎💖
There is no story: Led Zeppelin is the best group ever
Cryin won’t help ya..prayin won’t do ya no good
You just can't stop listening to the jamming...even after 7 minutes you rewind it back to the beginning... that's Zeppelin for you🔥
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE THIS!

One of the greatest songs ever recorded
Somewhere, deep in the Atlantic, my Sony Walkman is being memorialized in layers of sedimentary silt, locked in "play mode" with this track "playing". This song got me thru the misery of February boot camp in Chicago, A long deployment and endless longing for home.
Actually, the first song on their first album, Good Times Bad Times, is the song that blew me away. It's easy to listen to it and not take in the incredible interplay between the bass and drums. That tune is monumental. Like When the Levee Breaks, it stands up to repeated listenings.
As a kid, I just enjoyed the hell out of Zeps songs without thinking too much about the background or origins. Many years later, discovering Zep's love for blues music, the musicians and songs, it's all come together for me. Amazing how Zep took scraps of a song or lyrics and turned them into entirely different, energized masterpieces. Best band this planet has ever witnessed.

Not scraps of a song. Memphis Minnie and Kansas City Joe layed the foundation in order for Led Zep to build upon.

this is some fuckin epic Zeppelin
One of the best bands ever music human beings pure genius
Every time I listen to this, I can literally imagine a black and white film of a hallway, with Bonzo's kit in the middle, and when the intro starts, Bonzo fades into the film, and the rest of the band slowly fade in as the song builds, Page sitting like a boss on the amps, Plant sitting on an armchair with the harmonica and JPJ standing next to the fire place grooving on the bass
The seven most baddass minutes ever.
Essa música é uma obra prima do rock. Atravessará gerações. Obrigado, LED! 🇧🇷
Led Zeppelin has the best of the best!🤘
Greatest ROCK song of All Time!
I loved the 70s so much freedom we had then.
