This Barnes Lecture happened on-site at the Barnes on Sunday, April 23, 2023 from 1:30-2:30 pm
- About the Talk -
Jeremy Braddock | “The Origins of the Barnes Foundation in Two Exhibitions”
In April 1923, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts staged an exhibition devoted to Albert Barnes’s recent acquisitions of contemporary European art and African sculpture. This was around the same time that the Barnes Foundation was chartered Dr. Barnes began to consider his collection in his will. These three events had long-term consequences for the arts community of Philadelphia and for the institutionalization of modern art generally.
In this talk, author Jeremy Braddock draws from his book Collecting as Modernist Practice to revisit the cultural politics and intellectual debates around Dr. Barnes’s 1923 exhibition by placing it in the context of PAFA’s 1921 exhibition on “Later Tendencies in Art.” Learn how both shows set the terms for a wider discussion of the fate and meaning of modern art in the United States.

About The Barnes Foundation:
The mission of the Barnes is to promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts and horticulture.
Our founder, Dr. Albert C. Barnes, believed that art had the power to improve minds and transform lives. Our diverse educational programs are based on his teachings and one-of-a-kind collections.
Philadelphia art collector, Albert C. Barnes (1872-1951), chartered the Barnes Foundation in 1922 to teach people from all walks of life how to look at art. Over three decades, he collected some of the world’s most important impressionist, post-impressionist, and modern paintings, including works by Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse, and Picasso. He displayed them alongside African masks, native American jewelry, Greek antiquities, and decorative metalwork.
