Lecture 9 | Topics in String Theory

(March 14, 2011) Leonard Susskind gives a lecture on string theory and particle physics that focuses on the mechanisms that make the universe hot.
In the last of course of this series, Leonard Susskind continues his exploration of string theory that attempts to reconcile quantum mechanics and general relativity. In particular, the course focuses on string theory with regard to important issues in contemporary physics.
This course was originally presented in Stanford's Continuing Studies program. Leonard Susskind is the Felix Bloch Professor of Physics at Stanford University.

I've watched nearly 3/4 of all of Professor Susskind's lectures... I dropped out of highschool when I was young and am preparing myself for college by learning calculus, physics, and watching videos like these. Things are 100 times easier to understand because of this man. THANKYOU STANFORD! THANKYOU LEONARD SUSSKIND!

If you get this you will fly through your nearest college, and probably have a lot of what you are supposed to learn there already under your belt..

I feel so lucky that I live at a time when one doesn’t have to attend Stanford to hear these lessons. Thanks for sharing! Liked & subbed.

"That's another way of saying that me and my own frame of reference if I take an object right where I am it'll stay there; you don't have to be sophisticated about it, I'm my own object and I don't move away from myself, well you know, sometimes not usually" 56:04

Of course watching these videos only teaches you 10% of the matter presented, the rest should be learned through experience and practice, but this teacher is very pleasent to listen to and whatever he says, it's motivating to start doing homework on the matter :). And I'm not even a student.

What an amazing lecture, especially the last hour when he opens the floor. IMO this was the most entertaining and deep lecture of Stanford physics I've watched so far.

In the extremely distant future, distant galaxies that we now see in the distant past will vanish into redshiftness, and more and more nearer galaxies will successively fade that way until only nearby galaxies under gravitational influence will be observable. This is the cosmological image that is being presented to us today. Nothing that we should worry about.

If a violin player strokes the bow near the center of the string it makes a relatively dull sound at the dominant resonance, but if the bow is shifted closer to the bridge, more energy is transferred to the string so that there's a louder sound, and higher overtones fill out the tone. Transfering this idea to the relative frequencies of string theory in the circumstances described for black holes in the galaxies, and universe in general; ..and the string tension of gravity, enhanced by phaselocked overtones of mass, the octaves of observable dimensions etc, ..should explain the expansion and inflation of the universe, .. plus where the boundaries exist, and where the infalling information goes in QFT. We still eat sleep and poop the same way. Sitting on the same toilets for 2000 years. Still put our pants on one leg at a time like germanic tribes. We dont replace ourselves now we already maxed out and now we are in a degenerating state. Its a closed system regurgitation is in effect. We won't run out and even if we do it would be better for us to return to less consumption.

Could quantum mechanics represent the passage or Arrow of Time? This theory is based on just two postulates, 1.The first is that the quantum wave particle function explained by Schrödinger’s wave equation represents the forward passage of time or Arrow of Time itself photon by photon, quanta by quanta or moment by moment. 2. The second is that Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle that is formed by the wave function is the same uncertainty we have with any future event. No strings!
