Lecture 4.6 - Association between two numerical variables - Covariance

Association between two numerical variables - Covariance
Prof. Usha Mohan
Department of Management Studies
IIT Madras
Introduce covariance measure and discuss how to interpret the same. IIT Madras welcomes you to the world’s first BSc Degree program in Programming and Data Science. This program was designed for students and working professionals from various educational backgrounds and different age groups to give them an opportunity to study from IIT Madras without having to write the JEE. Through our online programs, we help our learners to get access to a world-class curriculum in Data Science and Programming.

kinematics to ray optics it gave us the way. then physics world got modernized and they took away my only friend. now i have no direction since there is no one to tell the way like the sign did.

@efficaciousuave 🫂 Yep i loved her a lot even though she was imaginary. But so am i. And yk what happens when 2 imaginary things combine? They become real. i×i=-1 Imaginary ---Real.

what is the relevance of sample and population covariance ? why does it matter that we divide by n or (n-1) ?

We divide by n−1 in the final step when our data is a sample (which it usually is) because we are unsure of the true population mean

why did we divide the sum by 4 in sample covariance??

  • @sandhyagupta6378

Because in sample covariance we divide the sum by (n-1) and here the number of observation is 5.
