In this lecture, an approach to standardization of IEC 61850 along with open system interconnection (OSI) seven-layer model are discussed. The OSI model has seven layers and its data model is divided into four logical groups. Further, the data flow among different logical nodes of OSI seven-layer is presented. Then, interfacing between IEC 61850 object model and OSI seven-layer model is discussed in terms of the communication in the power system substation. Lateron, classification of different messages of the IEC 61850 is highlighted. At last, configuration of devices as per IEC 61850 anatomy is discussed.
