The reason Jordan was scoring so many points in his early days was because he did not know how to get his teammates involved, how to make them better, so he took uopn himself to try and score all of the points he could. When Bird was scoring maybe 28 points, he also had 10 rebounds, 8 assists, but more importantly, his teammates (McHale, Parish, DJ, Ainge) were also scoring 20+ points as well. Larry knew how to make his teammates better, and he knew how to do this this at year one. Important fact: when Bird entered the league as a rookie, he inherited the worst Celtics team in history, they were the 2nd worst team in the 1979 season with a 29-53 record. By adding Larry to the same basic starting lineup, they went 61-21, the greatest turnaround in NBA history at that time, and went on to the Eastern Conference Finals, losing to Dr. J and the 76ers. He took a losing team, then instantly became big time winners. Jordan couldn't do this, it took him years to figure this out and learn how to win. And MJ credits Bird for teaching him ruthlessness, how to berate and intimidate his opponents, and how to make his teammates better. When Bird retired, MJ stated that he was happy that Bird was gone because he ruined a lot of MJ's games.

That's bullshit. It's not that Jordan doesn't know how to get his teammate involved. Most of his teammate is not good enough to make a basket against the Celtics who got 5 Hall of Famers.

@@zinnn.8842 Did you even read my post? Nope. In his ROOKIE YEAR, Larry Bird took one of the worst teams in the prior 1979 NBA season, WITHOUT KEVIN MC HALE, ROBERT PARISH, DENNIS JOHNSON, BILL WALTON, but with the same aging starting line up that lost 53 games, and improved their record to 61 wins and 21 losses. A trip to the Eastern Conference Finals. IN HIS F***ING ROOKIE YEAR. WITH THE 2ND WORST TEAM IN THE PRIOR SEASON. In his time in the 1980s, Michael Jordan had NO CLUE how to get his teammates involved, to make them better, that was the biggest knock on the man in his early years in the NBA (I was there), he had to do it all by himself, which WASN'T WORKING. Bullshit? Yeah, riiiight.

@@zinnn.8842 Larry Bird was the consummate team player. By virtue of his "team first" attitude and all-around skill he turned very good players into great players and great players into Hall of Famers. Bird came into the league with very little around him to work with for teammates yet immediately Boston saw tremendous results.

Sorry. Love Jordan but he had Paxon all along and his first two years Orlando Woolridge was scoring 22 points a game. Jordan was selfish and a ballhog. He didn't put it in those words but he basically admitted that his coach had to force him to pass and that his teammates were better than he had been giving him credit for. The excuse that Bird had 5 HOF doesn't really fly. He passed and assisted and made sure everyone got enough touches. McHale was sixth man and Parish was considered lazy. DJ was the only teammate that was a winner before he got to Boston. Walton was at the end of his career and was only there for Bird's last championship.

  • @rickbort7875

@@marykuettner752 Yes, people tend to forget that Jordan was a "ball hog" in his early seasons when Doug Collins was coaching, who made MJ the center of their game strategy. In his first three seasons, the Bulls couldn't even break .500. It wasn't until Phil Jackson became coach that Jordan began to understand team work. His need to be "The Man" simply wasn't working, even if he took 40-45 shots a game, scoring 35-40 pts a night. They were still losing. It took Phil Jackson, and to a small extent Bird, for Jordan to realize he needed to trust his teammates, and learn how to make his teammates better. Not as dramatic as Larry, but rookie Magic took a 47-35 Laker team, 5th in the Western Conference, and with the most of the same players (Kareem, Nixon, Wilkes) took them to a 60-22 record, and won the Finals. These two guys proved that by adding one extremely talented player with the sheer, unshakable will to win, they can vastly improve a team overnight.

Bird played 1556 games and Jordan played 2514 games. Bird had more competition than Jordan did. Jordan was better at defence, athleticism and making buckets. Bird was a better rebounder, and passer and had more ability to score from anywhere on the court over Jordan. Read Rick Bort's comments . I agree with him.

Bird did that time after time and could not be stopped. Show me another player who constantly told the other team what he was going to do before he did it and the went and did exactly what he said. You dont count Bird 6-0 against Jordan BUT you do count MJ 48 points per game against the Celtics? Bird and Jordan didnt mark eachother so no 1 on 1 . In actual fact on plays over those 6-0 games when MJ and Bird were directly opposed 1 on 1 its 38-33 in favour of MJ , so almost even and Larry was in his chronically bad back phase. You gusy are always about stats without looking at the facts or reasons behind those stats. Celtics still won. At the end of the day, its WHO won the game, There are sooo many sports where players on the losing team scored more points or goals individually. The fact remains MJ could not beat Larry Bird

Watch games of Bird vs. Jordan. You'll see games. Larry had better stats than Michael. It wasn't just a "Team" thing. It was a "Bird team" thing. You'll see Bird hitting game winning shots over both Pippen and Jordan. Jordan is the GOAT, but even GOATs always have their nemesis.

You can't count each individual's average during a game when it is a team game and they are not playing one-on-one so that doesn't count. Jordan had that average against the Celtics in those games not against Larry alone and Larry had that average against the Bulls as a team and not Jordan alone . I love Jordan but stop trying to find a way to erase the fact that he never beat Bird.

@@kevincusick7297 if we were talking about who was the best at each position then it could be done that way but that goes for any sport. There are way too many factors involved to crown one over everyone else. There's a lot more nuance to it then people account for.

Like your content young men, but got to get your facts straight before you throw them out like that. He averaged that against Boston as a team, not Bird. MJ got buckets on all of them. Get your facts straight...

Just remember, Mike had to score all those points to keep the Bulls in the game. Larry never lost a series to Mike and the Bulls; in point of fact, the Celtics and Larry swept the Bulls 3 times.
