I love how in Hunt: Showdown, the player catches the unfired bullet when he opens the chamber. something a lot of games tend to ignore and just have the player reload as if it never happened.

Another neat feature is you can hold reload button after firing and you'll keep the bolt open and reload the tube magazine so you only eject the empty cartridge. If you don't have the perk it's a great way to conserve ammo.

@@bshell1731 You can also hold down M1 after shooting so that the hunter doesn't pass a bullet, so if you press R, he will load the next round without having wasted a bullet since he never loaded it in the first place.

Fun fact : The Lebel 1886 was one of the first rifles ever produced to use the modern smokeless powder cartridges of that time instead of the black powder cartridges of which were more popular. It is also tube-fed, Similar to a shotgun.

In Hunt they incorporated that detail as well. Most other guns in the game have lots of smoke.

It was actually used right up to the Fall Of France in 1940 since French soldiers still had large numbers of them in the inventory

Cool to see the Lebel in games. Finally found a Lebel for my collection WW1 and WW2 gun collection. Have been looking for a Lebel for years. It has a Chatellerault receiver and was re-barreled in 1916, in the middle of WW1. It also has a bullet hole through the butt stock...It has been repaired, but is still visible. Makes me wonder what happened to the guy who probably held it...

The rifle that revolutionized firearms development with smokeless powder... Beyond the Wire did the chamber insert correct, one of the ways to bypass the elevator lift required. Hunt Showdown nails the slow process well, BF1 is a good arcade rendition of how slow it is to load.

@@YounesBoussouar-su7qk Note "arcade". And I don't think making the animation of him inserting the bullet loop like this detracts from the overall accuracy of the reload process. All the steps are pretty much there, just sped up somewhat.

I'd say Hunt: Showdown takes this one. It's got the fancy live cartridge catch, but also doesn't stoop to making fresh rounds magically appear from your character's hand. You want to reload a Lebel? This is how long it might take.

The animation is still incorrect. The ammo is never put in the chamber. Adding that one detail doesn't make it any better. Other games don't make it realistic for the same reason balancing exists. So hell no.

@@kenshiku The reload is functionally correct. At the end of the reload the Hunt guy puts a round on the lifter, then pulls the bolt all the way back to raise the lifter and chambers the round. This is how a Lebel works, according to Ian McCollum.

@@kenshiku You are incorrect. The Lebel loads kind of like a shotgun with a tube mag. The final round was placed into the elevator. The player character retracts the bolt to “snap “ up the elevator, which aligns the last round with the chamber. If you watch in .25x speed you can easily see he indeed chambers a round. Overall this is an EXCELLENT animation.

I would say this rifle was rushed into service because the French wanted to issue smokeless powder rifles as soon as possible. The action and magazine were based on existing designs so they just needed to engineer the cartridge

Very obsolete by 1914… the Lebel rifle was tube-fed similar to a shotgun and soldiers were only ordered to fire single shots as their doctrine suggests since it has a magazine cut-off and the magazine were only for emergency situations like a trench raid or CQB… the 8mm Lebel was just a necked down 11mm Gras rifle cartridge, hence the heavy taper and the big rim, the few things that made it difficult to load or feed for something like the CSRG Chauchat with its half moon magazine…

this thing is already considerably old in WW1, and it's even older during WW2...that the french thought postponing their semi auto rifle project was wise to make the then new MAS 36

I always thought the lebel was crude looking rifle and it had a lot of flaws but then when my uncle took me hunting in the woods the rifle he gave me was the lebel I enjoyed shooting that turkey with the lebel so no matter how crude the rifle it probably still works...... But there are some exceptions for some rifles

The Lebel served right up to the Fall Of France in May 1940 which led to the Dunkirk evacuation which British and also French soldiers were evacuation to the British mainland

I like how it jammed at the start, just like a real lebel.

I played the lebel on BF1 just to see that beautiful reload animation

None are 100% correct. The lebel holds 8 in the magazine, 1 on the lifter, and 1 in the chamber. None of the reloads show a round being placed on the lifter without being pushed into the magazine. Also, when doing a partial reload, there will be a round on the lifter that needs to be pushed back into the magazine before loading more rounds in the magazine

This video being uploaded after CaspianReport's video on France is very apt lol.

This is one of my favorite IRL rifles. The bolt cycle after reloading is something very special. Forward and down so the lift goes down and picks up a cartridge from the tube magazine, then back with force so it goes up and lifts a cartridge. Then forward to push the round into the chamber. BTW, if you like BF1, don't play the Lebel with the K-Bullets. It is the slowest gun to do so, and the K-Bullets are pretty useless anyway. The Enlisted reload is missing the lift, he would need to pull it up, then put a cartridge in the barrel and on the lift to get 10 bullets in the gun. This is very dangerous and unreliable.

3:04 I kid you not, that gunfire sounds like the M1 Garand in MOH Allied assault. Same audio files, perhaps?

Why do all the games with realistic cartridge animations (where they don't magically appear in your fingers) fail to get the proper bolt mechanism in place?

the lebel has not, by any means, a smooth action. hell, you have to operate the bolt with decision or the rifle won't reload. it's rare for animators to "catch" this thing right.

In Battlefield 1 the player looks like having trouble chambering a round after loading. Is it normal ?

I think that's how the gun work, he need to pull the bolt twice after full reload to get the first bullet in. Hence even in tactical reload he put 1 bullet after first bolt pull

There is a lifter inside the rifle as it essentially combines a shotgun style magazine tube with a bolt action mechanism. The lift is raised by slamming the bolt to the rear of the gun, and lowered when chambering the weapon as there is a button below the bolt handle which is pressed by rotating it 90 degrees.

Usually due to their rifles they previously has issues, the smoke which eventually will get marked by the enemies

That is how it supposed to load in real life. There is a lifter connects the tube and the chamber. To reload the gun, you have to push the lifter down so that you can insert rounds into the tube. Once finished, you have to slide the bolt to connect the lifter to the bolt then another time for the lifter to lift a round into the chamber.

Cuz realistically, who wants to have the pain of reloading it like real life? Might as well just have the rifle and load it yourself outside the game, that'll be fun isn't it? Also those games aint milsim.

Wow, the Enlisted one's looks, sounds, and functions absolutely atrociously. And it's a recent game too, no possible excuse. Looks like only BF1 got it right, even if it's not the reload the French themselves used.
