Leaving the canal | an unexpected problem! | A week in solo narrowboat life

I’m Laura, and I’ve lived solo on my boat, May Moon, travelling the UK waterways since 2020. Living on a boat had always been a dream of mine - and though it isn't always smooth sailing (!) it's still a way of life that I very much love and am so lucky to experience. Boat life enables me to experience and document the beauty of the countryside, travel and document the highs and lows of life on the water. I hope you can join me by subscribing!

The fact that you don't know everything about long boat life makes it more interesting to watch these videos. The viewer is in it with you.
I was planning on being a boater.. the reality of it, from your videos, spared me a costly mistake 🎉😂 I enjoy your content very much. Safe journeys
Not only I am not a boater, I live in the high desert of New Mexico and rarely even see water! Your videos are a breath of fresh air to me.

Ahah that’s so interesting!
I have been a boater for 8 years now and admit to have loved every minute, and dont think I have had a stressful time yet. Well other than locks and water level and the weather in winter and etc etc lol well fellow boaters know those issues too well
Never been on a narrow boat in my life, just like watching
Not a boater but I live in the USA so no narrowboats here. Love watching vlogs on the narrow boat lifestyle and since we are traveling to the UK in October, I’m hopeful to at least see some narrowboats in real life. Thanks for taking us along on your travels…both on and off the water.

I'm not a boater myself. I find your videos very interesting and the content is always an eclectic mix never a dull moment. From loosing your ring this week and empty pounds, to an insight into the spiritual world of white witches 🧙♀️ Great content.

Ah thank you so much!
Being a witch you already know a ring will be provided. I recently needed a trolley for my woodland and there was one outside someones house waiting for the scrap man. It needed repair as part of the repair I needed a length of angle iron and a few days later there was the perfect piece of angle iron outside someones house waiting for me. It is a magical world

Hello Laura.. I am a boater, and have lived on my 70ft boat for almost 25 years now.... Best fenders to keep your boat away from the edge are old car wheels (with pumped up tires on them). Some cars have a skinny thin wheel as the spare, and these are ideal, as not so heavy.. Maybe visit a car breakers.. :) two wheels, one each end of the boat, to deploy as you find necessary.... Good luck with everything, and stay safe... :)

Hi Laura, ive been living on my boat for 4 years now, im in Derbyshire. If i was closer i would be happy to give you my ring on one knee lol because of working im in a very expensive marina but looking for cheaper moorings. They keep going up so much. I wouldnt mind trying again to be a CC 😊
“Hey you BOY! Come and keep my boat steady and straight!” “ good boy, here’s a penny farthing for you” Nice video format!
not boater sadly but that'd due to the network not been up my end of the woods, but its interesting . All i can say this is buy a two or three rings. One for you to use, another as a back up to yours, and one to lend.

Laura, it suddenly struck me tonight that you boaters are a funny gang, after all those months you weren´t able to move at all you from time to time voluntarily go into "lock down" every now and then. 😜
I'm a 33 year witch practiced for so long and now MaeMoon? Good tidings and blessings too.
Hi, Laura, had a boat in the 80s. It was a cabin cruiser but built on a 100 year old timber narrow boat hull. It was called Woodruff but we renamed it Wanigan which is Canadian for house boat or caboose

My experience of narrow-boating is limited to a succession of family holidays on rental boats. I recall polishing the handle of the tiller with brasso every morning, and going through an incredibly long tunnel that used a traffic light system to prevent boats from meeting in the middle. I remember my dad distracting me when I was either opening or closing one of the lock gates. I let go of the windlass, which wasn't secured. It whipped around and the handle carved a circle into the sunburn on my leg.

I am not a boater but I have sailed yachts across the Channel to France and have raced sailing yachts in the past . I have never seen a lock flood like that before, that is quite scary. I thought it was a brilliant idea to put a lid on the mooring rope to stop the rats and mice hijacking the boat.

My Mother in Law had a boat for 10 years on the Kennet & Avon which basically means we had a boat for 10 years 🤣. It was 56ft, loved long days on the canals. Stopping for tea... not so much the days when we did 15 locks! She had a permanent mooring which is nice for community and convenience over winter as well as extra security.
Spent 6 years on a NB moored on the River Avon now in bricks and mortar.
l'm a live aboard on my 1st boat since july 2021 spent the 1st year and half in a mariner and since november 2022 l became a CC funny you cover the topic of leaning boats low water levels etc in his vlog l woke this morning to the boat on a lean but lucky not caught on the edge. open the pound above to level to pound below and all is grand love your vlogs keep them coming take care stay safe from me and my pirate dog spud
Love Narrowboats, holidayed on one and loved it. Envious of the lifestyle but won't give up my bricks and mortar to buy one 😂 so I just follow you and a couple of others, love your vlogs, thankyou 😊

Not a boater, but considering it at the moment. Enjoyed the vlog and advice given, thank you.
Aquavista is a company under the umbrella of CRT and they now own many marinas on the system.I got a residential mooring at one in the Midlands, the only quibble being was wether I could afford it.I'm a 40 footer and it's £3100 per year....£2000 for the mooring and £1100 approx for Canal n River Licence. With that you get free laundry and showers but your electric is metered through a company called Berthmaster, currrently 60p per KW.I have a computer running non stop and use my air fryer most days and it's about £10 per week. The marina sorts out your poll tax but stipulates you must move mooring twice a year, you just find people to swap with. Also with Aquavista,if any of the other marinas they own,as long as they have space, you can go in any of them for up to 30 nights per year...also you get something called a Moor Card which gives you 10% off anything from their chandlers!.

I love boats, even though boat stands for Bring Out Another Thousand 😳

Not a boater, but seriously considering becoming one!
I’m a boater, but just leisure not a live aboard. The weather has been horrible lately, not good boating weather at all! They say you aren’t a proper boater until you’ve fallen in. I’ve fallen into the river Trent it was very deep, I went right under and didn’t touch the bottom, I managed to scramble ashore so no harm done, but it was quite frightening, I was very worried about creatures in the water that I couldn’t see. Take care Laura. X

I have thought about maybe buying a Narrowboat years ago, also thought about lay outs and what not. Was fun to dive in to, but the reality is, i'll probably never have one. I do hope to drive Victoria in the future. You have her on film somewhere, doing a tug of war. Mykaskin here on KZread is the owner, very nice guy, been subsrcibed to his channel for many years now. Hi Laura I've just moved to a marina because I'm self employed and my tools are in my van so need to be somewhere safe. I'm in Cambridgeshire in an aquavista marina. You can actually spend time in other aquavista marina's check them out online they are a bit pricey but everything is there and it's safe especially if the river floods, also other boaters are so friendly x

Canal walker.
Im not a boater but spent years in the Royal and Merchant navies hence my interest in boats and ships. What i found interesting was the use of rat guards on the mooring ropes, on a large ship that moors away from the quayside or alongside and owing to the size of the vessel the only way to get onboard is up the gangway met by the QM with a baseball bat lol, or up the mooring ropes i can see the point. But on a narrowboat they could just access the vessel as its moored level with the tow path so dont really see how they would work. The one thing ive always thought about is do people living on narrowboats have problems with rats and mice onboard? As for mooring up for the winter even though its dearer i would think a marina would be better as its more secure and you could leave the boat for a few days if need be safe in the knowledge that it is safe and secure.
