**Leaving LA** (Lyrics)
Check the locks and leave the keys
Mouldy bath masked with Febreze
Something’s dead behind the refrigerator
Some poor fuck will deal with it later
I’ve spent the last ten weeks
Squeezing out the sponge of friendships plugging leaks
Talked until there’s no more to say
I’m going away
I’m leaving LA
And the tourists say
Please give me the directions to the Hollywood sign
I always dreamt of coming here to see the Hollywood sign
But on their way back down we’ll ask did you have a good time
They’ll say it’s just some fucking letters on a hill
I wander through the Bronson Caves
One more OK coffee at the Oaks Gourmet
I’ll watch the players at the UCB
Trying to improvise their way out of ennui
Walking trails in the creeping dark
Up to the observatory in Griffith Park
There’s too much light for stars anyway
I’m getting out of this place
I’m leaving LA
I’m leaving LA
And the studio executives who never made a thing
Blaming others for their failures taking credit for their wins
Wiping the blood of dumb artists from their chins singing
Kid you oughtn’t take it personally
On Hollywood and Vine a dime-store Spiderman
Shouting at a stoned Emma Stone dressed a la La La Land
And in the distance in both its glorious dimensions
The sign projects its shadow on the hill
Rushing by machine-gunned cops at LAX
Malfunctioning departure board says we’re boarding next
Belt off shoes off jacket off hat
Don’t need the attitude but I quite enjoy the subsequent pat down
And I’m sat down
As the A380 engine roars
Pushed backwards as this tube of monkeys rumbles forwards
Looking forward to
Another twenty hours on a plane
Nothing but shit films and my brain
I’ve been going slowly insane
I've seen your sport and I don't wanna play
I’m getting out of this place
I’m getting out of this place
I’m leaving LA
And the actors at Gratitude drinking undrinkable juice
And the agents taking ten percent in their sneakers and suits
And the writers in their Teslas trying to punch up Act One
Driving home on the 101 in the relentless fucking sun
And the needy and the greedy and the homeless and horny
And the deals done on treadmills at ten to six in the morning
And the Captain’s on the PA saying look for the sign!
But I find it’s just some fucking letters on a hill
Just some really ugly letters on a pretty ugly hill
I’m leaving LA
I’m leaving ‘ell

For context (If anyone's interested or didn't know already) Tim was to be largely involved with the production of an animated musical film called Larrikins that started production in 2013. It was going to star the likes of Hugh Jackman and Margot Robbie. He spent a lot of time and hard work on it, to the point where he and his family moved to LA. So when production was abrubtly cancelled in 2017... well... the song speaks for itself.

This song reminds me of the disenchantment I felt when I dropped out of Oxford. I'm studying from home now, with the Open University, and I couldn't be happier. Home, family, community. These are what truly matter. Letting myself get starstruck by the myth, pomp, and prestige was my biggest mistake. Listening to this song and remembering how I felt then shows me how far I've come. It encourages me to keep going. Funnily enough, back then I'd listen to White Wine In The Sun when I got homesick. Which I did often. Should have seen the signs really. Hah And now I'm crying. Don't I feel silly!

Hey for what is worth I fell you. I passed 10 years of shitty jobs seeking the myths of independent and stong women. Then I realized I wasn't happy to be strong, to be fighting constantly, to be so independent that I was really really lonely. Alone inside someone else dream. It's not silly. You have to do you. Nobody has the experience in advance so you have to live to see what it comes next. If there's something life has thought me is keep going but at your pace. Please stay safe :*

@@MrDodgerdodson Hi Mr Dodgerdodson. Thanks for reaching out. I can honestly say that the OU is very worthwhile. The courses are extremely flexible, and all the tutors are very supportive. My spouse is pregnant now (our first), so I've dropped down to studying part time. The change has been seamless. Mature students are the norm at the OU, so as a student you get a lot more respect from your tutors than you would from somewhere that's used to dealing with 18-21 year old kids all the time. They're also very used to people having their own lives, careers, families, and other commitments to work around, so extensions are easily obtained when needed. Depending on your circumstances, you may (or may not) find the first few modules easier than most courses. This is by design, as they take in a greater diversity of ability levels. But don't worry, the work will become more challenging once they can be sure that all the students are at a level to meet that challenge. All the undergrad courses also include training is core skills, like time management, planning for the future, and self-appraisal. They are very thorough in this regard. The other thing to mention is that their fees are significantly lower than other brick and mortar universities. TL;DR: Without the OU's philosophy of lifelong learning, my life would not be what it is today. If you need a degree, I highly recommend them.

I think that's where a lot of the anger comes from... All that time spent on something no one will ever see. There is so much creativity embedded in it and it is mind boggling to think of the calculations needed to pull it off with paper cutouts. Staggered museum street lights, piano key ramps, hats off to Tee Ken Ng. This is probably better than the animation Tim was working on, and a proper send off. Perfect capture of the Hollywood two dimentional superficiality as well.

Born and raised in Burbank, much of it in one of those boxes you see in a 'monkey-filled tube' landing/taking off from BUR... loved going to the Griffith Park Observatory - for the laser light shows and other exhibits of course, how on earth can you see anything in the sky with all the light pollution... occasionally seeing the Hollywood sign and thinking how ugly the hill and letters were... I live in a place with blue skies and four seasons now. "Squeezing out the sponge of friendships, plugging leaks" - how I love that line. Brilliant song.

I've loved Tim Minchin's work from the start, such comedic honest and technically amazing music. I'm loving this new direction of more pop edgy music, I really hope this reaches more people and gets him the recognition he deserves. Music genius should always be celebrated.
