You’d be amazed how fast it happens too. When I first got mine few years back, I walked out in the sun for about 4 seconds on my porch. I wasn’t paying attention and was holding it face down where the lens got direct sunlight. Then I went to put on my headset and there were now sun spots on the screen. Luckily it was the first week and oculus just replaced it for free, but it caused me to start keeping mine in a case with a piece of fabric covering the lens when I’m not using it 😅

Mine burnt too but thankfully it's not bad. I've had mine for 2 years.

As long as you're wearing it or the lens are facing away from the sun it should be fine. The problem is when the sun light hits the lens

it doesn't burn the lenses, it burns the display behind the lenses.

Yep, that happened to mine. Mine has some bad burn marks. Just got a quest 3 recently. Learned from that mistake. Couple safety measures now to make sure I don't do it again lol.

This ved made me find out my lenses doesnt focus on my eyes

I once tried to use my oculus outside in my backyard on a dry cloudy day. I discovered it doesn't track the controllers well in that environment.

With oled displays, you can. Lcd displays will get damaged if you leave them in direct light, dark patches will appear in them if they are left in direct sunlight.

i once tried to play outside in my headset, controller tracking was horrid

From a vr player with burned lenses, the clip of the vr with lens burn is extreme lens burn. If you do burn your lenses, you will just et a few dots on your screen

The lenses only focus light one way, if light goes through the eye facing part of the lens it would be dispersed

@@TheRobinSystem the screen could be sensitive to UV in general, I don’t see why the lenses have anything to do with an improperly shielded display. My whole point is that they blamed it on the lenses focusing the light entering into the screen. I would say that this screen would be damaged by UV regardless of the presence or direction of the lenses. Also in the demonstration they showed the light entering from the side of screen which is not possible under normal circumstances

I played on my porch before, there’s a green dot and it’s been on my lenses for years 😂

I brought my Index and pc in my backyard of my old place once on a sunny day. I didnt know about this back then. Thankfully valve actually replaced it for me even though it was my fault. Very little damage but it was a little burn spot.

The issue is that it focuses it in one direction but wouldn’t it’s lead it out in the other direction love you’re stuff tho and would love a follow up explaining this

That’s most likely if it was put in direct sunlight or maybe it got way too overheated but I’m not really sure

I actually had it happen to me when I left my VR facing towards the window and it burnt a line through the screen from the sun moving across the window.

I have a Quest 2 and I'm afraid to lose it, so this is really helpful to know.

So THATS why i have a yellow dot in my left lens when I play, good to know. And since its only in one lens its super easy to block out when playing

I have a yellow burn on my screen too!! But I never left it out in direct sunlight… it’s strange.

It's actually worse than you think. The lens is designed to take light from a surface and focus it to a small point in front of your eye while maintaining the fov. So what will happen is any light going into this focal point will be evenly dispersed on the LCD side. Basically, ensuring you cook your entire LCD relatively evenly

I have a quest 2. It has the yellow things from the sun. It’s been like that for years so I’m used to it now but I remember when I first got it I don’t know how it happened and what it was and it looked like Arabic so I asked my Muslim mom if she knew what it was 😂. It was only in the right eye too so I thought it was some digital error. I asked Reddit, tried to reset it, asked the official help center and I only figured it out from a video 💀

It's fine to put your headset in the sun as long as the lenses don't see the sunlight.

It’s good to get protective glasses so if you feel heat on the glasses take the headset off

Are we ignoring how the lens is facing the opposite direction? It would disperse any light coming from outside the headset.

I found this out the hard way but oculus did fix it for free even though it was user error and they would have been justified in refusing the warranty claim

Im an audio engineer, not a light person, but wouldn't it not be focused because it would be going in the opposite way? Light is focused from the screen to your eye, but if shined through the other way, wouldn't it refract?

Lenses are somewhat reciprocal, so you have to imagine the sun light as a bunch of parallel rays that get focused on the screen, although on normal usage, it's the parallel rays from the screen that get focused on your eyes.

When I saw the title, I thought somebody was literally sending an oculus inside the sun💀

Do the same experiment with an egg-it’ll show more of what would happen to a person’s eyes

Believe me, this can definitely happen. I had to return my meta quest 2 because of it.

you can actually use it outside, you just have to cover the lenses when you dont have your quest on. your tracking and passthrough cameras are not like the lenses, they dont focus light through them. so you can use your quest outside. just dont let the sun shine INTO your lenses Edit: ive also played outside before so yeah

I had it happen to 4 oculuses and the shop replaced all 4 under warranty

you can leave it, just keep your vr off. the reason isnt the burning its damaging the sensors with too much light

Just use a sock or any other thick cloth to block the lenses while not in use and not in box.
