I actually think this is necessary, from a marketing standpoint. Leatherman is basically the Apple of the tool world - they can’t (or don’t want to) compete with cheap Chinese manufacturers, so Leatherman goes for the high-end market instead. The ARC is the latest example of that - a truly premium multitool at a premium price. It’ll be interesting to see if that strategy sets them apart in a sustainable way.

except that is a new tool, and has some serious upgrades..this..this makes no sense. And its been a mediocre keychain tool for far too long because of the lackluster scissors.

@@GarrettRockey I think they think they're the apple of the tool world, but as he mentioned in the vid and reiterated above, they have too many issues to pull that off. I have a lot of friends who work in the trades and one by one over the years they've all been writing Leatherman off because there's just not a substantial enough difference in quality and performance to justify the cost over other brands. I guess the only thing I disagree with is that I don't think it's a smart decision to just give up on such a substantial portion of your market, especially when their reputation was built on the word of these people.

Same way benchmade has gone, Harley, Jeep, and many other brands. Products are worse than ever per dollar spent. Poorer quality for most of those products named and higher prices.

Seems like since the Leatherman Garage project started they've lost sight of what got them the brand recognition in the first place and instead are relying on scalpers to prop up their company. Curious to see how long before they crash and burn.

What's really funny is so many people like their products, even foreigners who can't get them overseas due to cost reasons, that Leatherman could literally print their own free money but instead they'd rather screw over their own loyal buyers. I guess they had their day, it could've lasted longer but they wanted to go out

I’ve carried multitools for a long time, but only recently got into carrying knives. I noticed right away that there is a pretty huge misalignment between the prices of multitools and the prices of knives. A Spyderco Endura is $95 - for a 30 year old design with a plastic handle and a blade steel that is maybe a little better than what you get in a Wave+. The Wave+ is only $25 more for all stainless steel construction, two blades, and a host of other useful implements. The profit margin on a Wave has to be significantly smaller than the Endura. Or consider the Benchmade 940 at $216 vs $190 for the Charge TTi. They use the SAME blade steel - the Charge has titanium handles compared to the aluminum handles on the 940. And once again, the Charge has MUCH more to offer in terms of utility, and undoubtedly costs much more to make than the 940, yet costs less at the point of sale. Leatherman is probably trying to close that price/value gap, but they’re doing so at a time when cheap Chinese Wave clones are flooding the market. They’re in a tough spot.

@cybercanal5319 I don't carry regularly, but mine have cut just fine when I have used them so I can't say that they suck. I sure do read lots of comments here about how terrible they are, but like I mentioned previously, the leatherman hate is strong here so I don't put much stock into all the crying and complaining.

The 25 year warranty must kill them too, even on a simple folding knife I wouldn't want to fulfil that (unless you make the replacement of notoriously lesser quality)

Do they think jacking everything up will make the Arc pricing look more reasonable? Things like this, the scalper-oriented Garage releases, and discontinuing great tools like the Squirt and Style lines are all proof they've lost their way. I'm done with Leatherman now.

Leatherman, Benchmade, Streamlight. They’ve all lost my business between price hikes and discontinuing popular models. I’ll take a Flissa wave+ clone, a Civivi whatever, and Wurkkos TD02 for about 1/4 the price of the MUT. A tool is about utility and value.

I originally got the micra thinking it would end up being my go-to daily carry for a small scissors. But ended up going back to an SD classic & haven't looked back.

Hi-Points are a 10/10 unit of measurement for price. I've definitely discussed purchases with friends in terms of how many Hi-Points we could have gotten for that money.

Weirdly, I was trying to sharpen my micra scissors last night and I can confirm the scissors are awful outside of cutting paper. It was having issues on a bubble envelope.

They need to bring back the juice, they almost compete with the vic compact and the sog power pint/liter are killing it.

I'm pretty much done with Leatherman, they've let me down over the years. They cannot meet expectations anymore, which is sad because I liked them. I feel like the price hike is desperation to keep the lights on.

I really have No clue what is going at Leatherman regarding improving their small tools. They killed the Juice series, then the Squirt now ...the Micra. Improve the tools and people will buy. Leatherman needs better Leadership

Apparently they are hyper focused on profit per unit which just leads to eliminating lower end models.

It’s kind of interesting that a tool company has drifted so far from a utility item to being more of a luxury item like a Louis Vuitton purse or something. I think those making decisions in Portland are out of touch.

Micra is my favorite. Bought some tsa auctions off of eBay when I noticed the price hikes. They were pretty much good as new for $15. $50 is steep. Maybe someone will make something similar. Ohh you just revealed some options. Sweet. I like the mini sailor.

Thanks for the tip on Leathermans on sale in Lowes stores........Prices seem to be up to store manager....Went to 6 different Lowes.....most had nothing.....Saw 2 Waves at one for $77!! Picked up a Rebar at one for $60...and a Wave for $55!!!! Picked up 2 more Rebars at another for $50 each...Saw an empty peg hook for Rebars at $33!!!! I wonder how many they sold at that price!!!

It was maybe 2015 for me when I bought my Wingman from Lowe’s for around 30-40 dollars? The micra at nearly twice that price in 8 years is crazy.

The Micra was my second Leatherman tool after the original PST. I got both back in the 1990s so hopefully my scizzors are better than the more current iterations. Guess I'll have to dig the Micra out, and see.

Leatherman’s pricing has gone a little insane. The tools on the Micra are stamped and there’s no R&D. They’re going to price themselves out of business. I think they’re got some marketing idiot who’s trying to sell a lifestyle brand to an upscale market. They’re going to lose the blue collar and craftsman market that made them. I suspect it’s the same marketing team behind the Arc and Free fiasco. Tim Leatherman needs to come back and fire them all.

Wow! I thought the ARC was pricey …..and it hasn’t even been officially released. Leatherman really need to focus on making the best tools possible! They need to stop messing around with the Garage Devices! Apply all engineering resources towards the existing product lines and new products!

That is interesting how the current Micra doesn't cut well. Iv owned a couple of the older versions and use for everything from cutting rope to trimming plants. I thought I had a few more of them from that same time period still in the clam pack but when I check its the Sog Crosscut.

The only thing I use the micra for is the mini flat screwdriver. It works great on glasses.

I agree with you on the Micra. I have the Style CS and those scissors are waaayyyy better. Carry a Mountaineer for EDC, but still love my little Style CS.

The scissors in my style cs sucked similarly to the micra in this video. I've lost it but I think I bought it around 2019 or so. The quality control on the scissors just doesn't seem good

I just got the micra in Canada for $40 CAD with my batch 006 order so glad. Lol. EDIT: DAMN IT'S 64.99 NOW. I'd never buy it for that price now that I have it... It's not worth that price. Way better mini multi tools on amazon for that price. 😅

The NexTool mini is great. The scissors are fantastic.

If you still want one, plenty of good used ones out there. I got two examples of when they were made well for 40 bucks. One for the wife and one for me.

Wow, just wow....poor QC & higher prices....Wave+ 120, Surge 150, ST 300 100...I think that folks will be looking for alternatives this Xmas season...

I briefly considered giving a Leatherman tool a try, but knowing that I could buy 1 or even 2 good swiss army knives for the price of one leatherman I decided to just get another swiss army knife. I have two on me at all times, one in the pocket, one on the keychain. Several around the house and one in my car. My grandpa carried his for decades and abused the hell out of it, held up like a champ.

Yea the squirts went outrageous before they discontinued them. They got rid of the juice which imo was the perfect size edc. Not talking I work as a tradesmen or electrician or I wanna take in the woods. Just overall daily tasks and weight the juice was unparalleled. But I agree their quality has went down dramatically in the past decade and their prices are getting ridiculous. I mean I guess everything is getting ridiculous but I agree with you. If their quality is going down the prices shouldn’t be going thru the roof as well

People are really trying to trade a Juice for e. g. a Leatherman charge tti. That is cracy! I have 2 Juices (XE6 and a CS4, but no squirts) and I still love them and will never give them away!

Leatherman tools are amazing quality, but their quality do NOT justify their prices. Such a shame. Fortunately I already own a Surge and Skeletool CX, because I don’t plan to buy any new Leatherman tools for many years to come, if ever again. 🤷🏻‍♂️

When the Leatherman first came out, I hated them ,and I hated them for a long time because it was so hard to get any of the tools out. Well, so many years later, I've changed my tune on that. They make a darn good tool. But the price has gone up so high on them that most people can not afford them. The price has gone up, but the quality has not ! There are a lot of alternatives out there so I would give them a try.

I bougth a second hand Micra for 15 bucks, sell it and come back to Victorinox Manager. The Micra cuts worst, the inside tools are slow to deploy because you have to deploy the scissors first, the tweezers are useless and I dont like the chisel grind of the blade.

THe MUT were always the most expensive Leatherman in Europe so not a big news but it's still worth it IMO. When I'm working on stuff (woodworking, metal or any construction job) I always have it on my side (I have the one for bomb squad with the pointy bit). My other Leatherman is the signal, more casual, great for camping or any outdoor activities. I can't buy a multitool that hasn't the "hammer" and clip on it, so useful !

I have a squirt(rip) and a surge. I'm happy with them, but Nextool is really starting to impress me, and will probably be the next multitool I buy. I also have a victorinox one hand trekker that is a great tool.

I guess I'm sticking to the secondary market for Leatherman tools... I've bought like new Waves for $50.... This is actually very sad.

I was disappointed when I received the Style PS. Scissors spring not only broke during the first weeks, but scissors themselves were too flexy and the so-called "screwdriver" (nailfile) did not survive simple screw in plastic. At the same time I own my favourity Style ES, which is brilliant, yet I didn't anticipate such low quality. At one point, I even suspected it was a counterfeit.

Hype marketing is what works, and higher pricing means bigger hype. I hate it. My guess is that their warranty will cause secondary market prices to go up too.

My own micra scissors are crap. Wish it was a pliers head because I like the rest of it.

I think these prices hikes are symptomatic of the times. We printed money like it was cool back in 2020 and shut down the economy. We're now feeling the ramifications of that.

Ordered a MUTT thanks. Now bring back the crunch and put the Arc on the website. I compare knife and multitool prices to watch prices. I can buy all of them for less than one rolex. Haha. Should have bought a micra, but I have a PS4 I got before they went away which is much better for my needs.

Laughable. Their current prices were already a miss for me. Pocket and belt tools are expendable items, and the legacy brands are going to have to pull off some real innovation to get me shopping for anything outside of Ganzo and Nextool. Only thing I can't get elsewhere is the Skeletool and I'm not convinced I need it.

As a European SAK guy I was open to the idea of trying Leatherman multitools. I wanted to give them a chance but their prices were already too high this side of the pond and I don't have that kind of money. Plus I can't take them wherever I want because of their locking blades. You hear me, Leatherman? You're losing potential new customers all over the world.

Bought a micra with a Gerber dime for $20ish bucks on eBay a while ago

Leatherman is looking at Benchmade right down the road making a killing because of their price mark up. They're trying to become the Benchmade of multi-tools. Some of their Garage offerings make me think they're considering directly competing.

Hopefully SwissTech makes makes a Mut alternative for under $50

Was waiting on the MUT to come back in stock got the email want to buy seen the price and said well that wait was a waste of time and moved on

Micra in Euro/Germany was always 60/80Euro, MUT was already 189EUR @ 11/2022, jumped multiple times over 200EUR, but is now stable around 230EUR since this July. I'm talking about cheapest online sale, not recommended price. The Vic Compact is around 38-32EUR for at least for a while now, (was 20-28EUR around 2009-17)

Nextool mini sailor scissors tool is the best scissors at the moment..

I have several leathermans, with two 2nd gen Waves, a Skeletool, two Micras, a Squirt, Breswer, Carabiner, Bit Kit, Crater, and Style. I would get Micras sometimes just as an impulse buy because they were only $25-30 so I could throw one in a tackle box or glove compartment, etc. I won't get another LM any time soon, unless they drop the price significantly. I'm not paying Benchmade prices for CRKT level items. At those prices, there should be AT LEAST S30V blades, not 420HC (not that there's anything wrong with that steel, love me a Bos treated Buck.)

Said this a few months back. All the other tools gonna go up so 250 for the arc doesn't seem all that much

There's many reasons why I only buy and use old style Leathermans. Quality and better attention to detail among two reasons usa branded tools outclass new models with few exceptions. Unfortunately supply drying up after 20 years

I never jumped on the Leatherman band wagon, and don't have any plans to do so. These prices make no sense.

Leatherman is only good for their pliers. Compare to SOG Gerber and Victorinox. Gerber is famous for their Center Drive, SOG maybe got their power assist Good innovation but not much usage for it. And yes I agree for ages Micra just couldn’t design a proper correct scissors. If you watch TX Tool Crib he has a scissors comparison video in the past and the only decent scissors is the Surge but it’s still inferior to all the Victorinox in his collection. Wave Charge not much comments as it’s super mini but for large scissors like the Micra is the worst scissors among the brands he has, only Surge is decent and yet it’s not the best. In it Ben also notice the Micra not just flex, but the shear geometry is totally wrong, it’s just a flat grind whereas the Victorious has a slight internal curving, even the smallest Victorinox scissors is out performing the Surge and the Micra is garbage, totally unusable. I’m shock to see even China brand NEX Tool is a better scissors. Tim Leatherman needs to do better… Likewise for knives Leatherman use outdated steels, 440HC is no longer relevant, S35V is already the new norm for the longest time yet it’s only in Charge series S30V. And when they finally implement Magnacut the ARC is very expensive that it’s better to carry a Surge and a separate S110V Spyderco, cost around the same but more superior. Recently there’s little innovation from Leatherman hopefully they don’t get too complacent and let other brands catch up. Gerber is already taking over as the best multi tool driver, and Victorinox is still the best scissors and has recently ventured into multi tools as well. Their pliers heads aren’t the best compare to Leatherman as it has replaceable 154CM cutters but still fairly decent, but the Gerber Dual Force and the SOG power Assist are nice innovations as well those brands are catching up. I don’t know what’s wrong with current edc tool, they are just way too expensive. I use a $40 sog switchplier which works as expected. Or maybe it’s on me because of being poor 😂
