    I saw someone at a festival use the folding straw mechanism from a modern water bottle and then cut the straw to fit the leather canteen/costrel/leather water bottle to fit then they could just open the sippy straw to drink...I don't like using plastic or PVC for drinking because it has toxins from the plastic that leech into the water but it was a great idea.

    Why is the leather strap sewed on the bottom? Why not put that seam at the top with the spout since you are sewing the leather there anyway?

    Would be an option too, but it would be more difficult and you can sow on the opening already completely on before sowing the big pieces together. It's just for the handling easier, if you try it out in your way, please let me know how it turns out :)

  • @NilsBeardfoot

    I use it only with water, definitely no sugar. After use I wash it with water and let it dry completely. So I not really cleaning it, but with only using it with water there is not much to clean, but yes at some point it may need some cleaning after long use and then I may just replay partly the inside wax.

    The only part i feel a bit doubtful of is the glue. The flask will be used to drink from i assume, so the toxicity risk of glue feels like a step worth skipping or altering.

  • @NilsBeardfoot

    You are right, but the same is true for the leather itself. When putting undyed veg tanned leather in water for a while there also will come substances off. This is way you should not save any bees wax, but in enough to be sure everything is well covered up and the water does not touch leather or glue; on the mouthpiece this is not so easy but there most of the time is no water

  • @Grihmmy

    @Grihmmy

    @Nils Beardfoot Leathercrafter myself, but i only use veg tanned. I have seen bottles being made with no glue however, so perhaps there are alternatives for you craft to skip that part. Just me thinking loud. As for the tip, you could switch that to cork fabric, as well as stitch it as a collar from the inside, instead of out and inwards. Get a good seal that way, and you don't need coloring. Anyways...just thinking out loud, and kudos for a good looking craft bud 👍

    @@Grihmmy There are other ways yes, you could just punch the holes on both pieces in advance, but you would have to line it up perfect. I appreciated you thinking out loud, thank you :)

    Relax. Some glues don't just DRY - they CURE. Once this has happened the product is usually impervious to leaching.

    Idk how I feel about using contact cement. Gotta be careful with that shit leeching into the water

  • @NilsBeardfoot

    @NilsBeardfoot

    4 ай бұрын

    True, but its the same about the leather itself with left over tanning agent which is water solvable. The solution for both is enough wax covering it completely so the liquid inside has no directly contact to leather or contact cement. I was worryed about this as well so I but clear water in each finshed bottle, wayed a day and there was no color change from tanning agent
