Leather Bow Grip DIY

Спорт

Adding a leather bow grip to your bow is a great way to customize, enhance, or make your bow grip more comfortable. This is my first attempt at making and installing a leather bow grip. Results may not have been the greatest and a long way from professional, but the satisfaction of making and doing it myself far outweigh the negatives about the results.

Awesome job! I'm putting a beavertail on my recurve bow and this video gave me some good ideas. Definitely going to soak the tail and clamp it around my bow first. Very nice stitching. My stitching is horrible, yours looks great!

Thank you my friend. I really appreciate the compliment. I think I got lucky on the stitching. My first go at it. Let me know how’s yours turned out. Glad the video helped you out. Have a great evening. Best regards.

Coming from a person who has wrapped more longbow grips than I can even remember, that was a really incredible job. Especially for the first time!!! Keep em coming and shoot straight!!!

Thank you so much for the compliment. I really appreciate it! I want to do this to my other bows, but i think i will try it with a thicker leather to see if it gives me a better result. Thanks again, and thanks for watching. Have a great day my friend!

@@ScottWinters you get pretty cheap stitching chisels on Amazon for about 10 bucks a set of 3, they are not the best but will be just fine for occasional leather work, always lay a thick piece of leather or wood underneath when working with them so you don't mess up the points

Thanks for the advice my friend. I've looked at a good number of those on Amazon, but never acted on purchasing them. I think I'll revist before I start my next grip project. I really appreciate the pointer. Have a great day!

Just saw this one now, for a first time it looks great! I'm looking to start making leather grips here soon for my bows. I have the saddle grip you can buy, but they seem to lose their stickiness after a bit of shooting and are sliding around a bit. Great job man, looks great to me!

Gabriel thank you for the feedback. I really appreciate it and really had no idea what I was doing at the time. I think what helps mine stay in place is I actually cut it a little short in the seam area and that helped it stretch a bit tighter in the grip area. It was a great project and I will be making more for my other bows. Hopefully you can resolve the sticking issue. I really appreciate your time my friend. Have a great day! Best regards.

Inexperience notwithstanding, you did a nice job! I also got into amateur leather working about a year or two ago, mainly to repair a couple of old tool belts that I couldn't bear to part with. I found it very satisfying even if not completely professional looking. Just remember, over time, the leather will absorb and for a time, retain the moisture from when your hands sweat, especially if you shoot a lot during the warmer months.. I've actually seen the result of an old, commercially made bow that had a leather grip that had been left on the bow for years. The wood did actually did rot under the leather. I assume it was sealed when new with some kind of oil or poly finish, nevertheless...

DS thanks for the comment and the compliment. I really had no idea what I was doing. I really appreciate the feedback. The leather is thin so it may not hold up longterm, but I am pleased with it. As you said it was satisfying to create something from basic materials and have it work. Again, thanks for watching and taking the time to add a great comment. Have a great evening my friend!

You pull it tight while sewing it when it dries it tightens. You put barge glue on the leather first.

Hi Scott, is the same method used when adding/making the ray skin my husband purchased into a grip on his asiatic archery horse bow? Thank You 🙏

Thank you for the question. It would be the same process. I would wrap the grip and limb area with plastic cling wrap and lightly moisten the leather to help shape and conform to the grip. I appreciate your time. Have a great day. Best regards
