Actually, birds need grit (like sand) to properly digest their food. But too much can be harmful. There is still plenty of sand on the food. www.gardening-for-wildlife.com/grit.html

Some can handle a bit of sand. Babies wouldn't considering the size of it, would be like wet cement blocking it's digestive tract.
