A fixed mindset stems from the fact that a lot of students are not willing to struggle. As soon as the material gets tough and they have a hard time understanding, they throw their hands up and say something like, "Well I guess math just isn't my subject!" Then they go about their lives thinking they are just not capable of learning math (fixed mindset). The thing they don't understand is that struggling is part of learning mathematics. This is why when I teach difficult topics, I remind my students that this was a hard topic for me to grasp as well. I often share stories of me sitting in a coffee shop late at night pulling my hair out, or frantically searching youtube for someone who can dumb it down for me. This helps my students feel more comfortable with the idea of struggling and accept it as part of the process, instead of getting down on themselves. Anyone can learn math. It just takes a lot of time and perseverance.

@@SomeRandomGtaDude-zl3us This is terrible advice, and it's attitudes like yours that cause perfectly capable students to give on on themselves. I never said IQ wasn't fixed (although it actually is possible to increase your IQ to some degree). What I said is that mindset and attitude are far more important, and with the right mindset, anyone can learn anything if they are willing to dedicate enough time and effort. This has been shown through years of research, yet there are still people like you promoting giving up anytime you struggle at something. Sounds like a great way to live in ignorance and sell yourself short of what you can accomplish. What a terrible message.

@@SomeRandomGtaDude-zl3us Then you would be a lot better at whatever it is you practiced and spent your energy on... I don't understand why you are asking this question since the answer is obvious. I also don't understand what point you're trying to make here. Would it be worth it? I don't know, that's completely subjective and up to you to decide. Was it worth it for Michael Jordan to continue playing basketball after he wasn't picked as a starter on his high school team? Clearly for him it was, and he ended up being one of the greatest of all time. Was it worth it for Jimi Hendrix to keep making music after he was booed off stage during his first tour? Hopefully you get the point by now. Your initial claim seemed to be that talent and natural ability are required in order to get good at something, and that if you don't have those then you should just give up. That's the claim I have a problem with. Not only because it's not true, but in general it's just a terrible message for kids who might be reading this.

@@SomeRandomGtaDude-zl3us - Not true at all. You keep making these bold claims and providing no evidence. As a math person, I thought you'd know better. "I've seen it everywhere" and "I have a friend" are not evidence. If you want my opinion, it sounds like you haven't had the experience of overcoming obstacles to reach goals in areas that you aren't naturally good at. I highly recommend trying it. I think it will humble you and change your perspective a little bit. Just my 2 cents. By the way, I had to drop the first math class I ever took in college and take the lower level math class instead. Now I have a math degree, am currently in grad school, and have been very successful. Would talent have made it easier? Of course. Do I think I'll ever be a well known "elite" level mathematician? Probably not. But that's OK with me. I've still been able to make progress, accomplish my goals, and make a successful living doing what I enjoy. I've worked really hard, but I'm not special. I believe that if I can do it, anyone can. Cheers

@@BrainGainzOfficial thank you for staying calm in your answer, for all the people (kids and adults) reading this. As someone who is working with several different communities working at overcoming obstacles, I also see a problem in how the majority of our teachers are forced to set up their classrooms, and the way most school boards force schools to function: in manners that are not conducive to success. I do not blame the students, their parents, the teachers or the schools. I don't blame anyone, because blaming is part of the problem. Shame inhibits the neurons from being able to establish new pathways, which interferes with humans normally natural ability to adapt and evolve. There are definitely ways to work around the shame/blame/guilt/trauma loops that have been established in our country, the first step is in shifting our own approach. I explain to people I'm working with that geometry is critical, because understanding how proofs work allows us to shift faulty, self-defeating logic sets that might have been effective coping strategies when we initially developed them, but now they are holding us back (like a second grader who was shamed by a teacher and told negative numbers don't exist...which negatively impacted the next 6 years of schooling. They overcame the teacher, and graduated with honors earning a decent amount of scholarships). If that student had stayed with the mindset "I'm dumb, and I don't deserve help" based on their (unknown) experiences with an uncle and that teacher, they never would have realized how brilliant they actually were... and if it hadn't been for one teacher who took the time to sit with them and explain the brain can't process trauma and learn math/science at the same time, they probably would have dropped out of school and never made it into a program at Sandia Labs. TL/DR: I agree with the majority of your comments, except "the fact that a lot of students are not willing to struggle". Very few adults are able to comprehend just how much our kids are struggling with the ever present fear of "am I going to get shot at school today" and "when I get home, will my parents be there" as well as "will the earth support us until I grow up" on top of "will we have enough food to eat"? I think teachers, tutors, principals, parents all need more support so they can rediscover their empathy, and help our most precious asset-- our children-- learn that they are valued, loved, and *worthy* of being treated with respect. Otherwise it's not a matter of "they aren't willing to struggle" as much as "they are already struggling far beyond their capacity and don't have the resources or support to do better than the adults they are surrounded by". Thank you for sharing your own struggle, I see you helping new generations discover what a beautiful language math is for people who have the support to learn.
I’ve watched at least 25 videos about the brain for younger kids today and this is by far the best one. Scientifically sound, appropriately communicated (e.g. the comparisons are perfect).

Now that I´m writing this I can see, that my brain graw up, because i´m writing without translate or cheking notes, all this words, verbs and informations are here, it´s awasome. I´m starting to understand when you´re talking in your videos, i´m studing a lot, but taking care do not overload my brain. Thank you so much for your videos, they´re so interestings and funnies. new subscribtor!! =D

Has it gotten any better? Best thing a professor shared with me is our brains are wired for survival. If we don't have the support we need to thrive, our brains will focus on finding supports, first. Only after we find the supports will our brains share resources (more neuron connections) so that we can learn math and science. Anxiety (adrenaline and cortisol) take up a lot of resources because they are survival hormones (from when we needed to evade saber toothed animals) and don't leave a lot of extra calories laying around for learning. Have you found anyone to work with that you trust to address the anxiety? Once you can develop some new coping skill that serve you better, your brain will have a much easier time accepting this.

Too bad many professors don't encourage their students to push through their failures. But really we must be able to risk failure to succeed. Funny thing is that as a competitive athlete I knew I couldn't be successful if I didn't risk failure, but as a student in higher level science, which scares me, failure is almost preordained, and it makes me want to not try. Which is crazy, since I know I have to struggle in order to improve.
Big brain moment.
