Learning your first (free) synth

Last week we learnt synthesis conceptually, this week let's put that into practice on a free synthesizer! This is part of the core skills of making your own electronic music, so if you have any doubts about how it works, now is the time to get this covered so you can build on that knowledge afterwards!

This tutorial should be interactively used in every classroom, preferably in elementary school. I'm totally convinced that it is fun for most kids and will get some of them interested in synth music from an age where they learn most quickly.

Exactly!!!! School (in Asia) forces children to learn maths, science, history. But not musics. Rarely even a co-curricular activity relating to musics. I really regret not learning anything music during my young age and now it's even tougher with a full time job 🥲😭

Please Oscar Sir ! Please make more of this sound designing tutorials with Vital !! It was way easy to understand with this video because the UI is like Serum and I get so so confused how to route and map because everyone out there uses serum and it's expensive (for me) to buy official Serum while this is so amazing! Thank you very very much 🤗

Cheers Oscar; I'd completely forgotten you had previously recommended Vital and for a relatively newbie like me, to spend 20 minutes listening to you explain and play about with the sound design elements was a revalation. I've mucked about in Reason but tended to stumble across sounds I liked rather than being able to have a sound in mind and then working towards building it. Big up Matt T for making such an impressive VST too!

Vital has been in my Ableton plugin list for a few months now and every time I wanted to try, I got overwhelmed (despite getting some basics with Ableton Wavetable). Stumbled upon this video and it was so clear and straightforward explained. Thanks a lot. I like your enthusiasm :). I do struggle how to make several Oscillators work together and the benefit of it. I play around and hear the different sounds, but it feels like shooting in the dark without satisfying success. Would be great to see how you make use of it :).

I'd say there's two main ideas for me: either you want each oscillator to play a different octave (or +7semitones works well too), that adds a lot of thickness to a sound; OR you want to play the same tone but sliiiightly detuned, to create a phasing kind of sound (like in a supersaw or a reese sound).

Do you plan to release 1/ a course about let's say an exprimental trance track with experimental evolving sounds (e.g., like found in Andrew Bayer - distraction or most Simon Postford pieces and also in Astronaut Ape), 2/ do you plan one course about designing sounds more like Vangelis or found in the tracks from Blade runner 2049? 3/ a beginner's course with free vst tool like this one? Another question: you use to use Ableton as a DAW. Does-it matter and how it matters for your courses? Are they related to DAW and what if we have another like cubase or FLstudio?

I'd rather use VCV rack, which runs on Linux, Windows and MacOS. No other software is needed. You don't have to learn first Ableton Live (which is pretty confusing in its own way) and then Vital, maybe discouraging you. You just learn VCV which is a complete Modular synthesizer system and you can make your patches as simple or complex as you like. Still, thank you for showing us Vital. I will give it a try. Edit: My Moog DFAM can't do sawtooth, unbelievable as it may seem. 😁
