I forgot to say in the video, I did go to Wheelie University. It's a course here in San Diego where you learn on a Speed Triple and don't use the clutch at all, just the timing of revving the throttle, chopping it, then timing the rebound back with more throttle. On my Instagram page, I have a picture of me at the course where I'm almost at 1200. Check it out instagram.com/motojitsuclub/

You have to get over the fear of tipping back? I’m very surprised you have notwheelies in the time you read and you’re an excellent rider. I had no more than 1500 miles under my belt on brand new bike and I was wheeling at that point just because the bike came up a few times and I just let it stay up and control the wheelie and took all the fear out. You just have to do it once and have control and you’ll be OK. You’re on a super Moto you can slam the front down as hard as you want so as long as you come to the rear brakes, you’re good.

A few tips: - Have consistent starting speed. Choose a speed like 10, 15, or 20 and always start at that speed for consistency. - Stay on the gas after you clutch it up. Most of the wheelie happens after you let out the clutch. You need to continue to stay on the gas and even increase it after letting out the clutch to bring up the wheel and and maintain it. How much throttle you have during and after the clutch engagement is far more important than how much gas/rpm you have before letting out the clutch. - Less talk, more wheelies!

@@Safsejv-ih2ss You will probably need more gas than that, but it all depends on the engine. I'd suggest trying it out with about 25% throttle first, then try again with more throttle, etc. Repeat until you find the sweet spot.

You have to get used to the feeling of the front wheel being in the air, then you can really start practicing. Took me about a month of learning to start feeling and riding the balance point, but I can wheelie a bicycle for however long I want, so that makes it easier. The most important thing is the rear brake- learn to use it immediately! Bring the front up and ride the rear brake to bring it back down again. You need to get it in your muscle memory, that's critical. No wheelies without the rear brake.

Greg.....dont waste time with 2 inch lifts....its a timid approach to an aggressive technique...stick with 2nd gear clutch ups...quick clutch release ...then intentionally lift beyond your comfort level and immediately hit the rear break forcing bike down....remember you always have that option as you cover the rear to immediately set her down....practice that control variable

For the first time in the 22 years that I've owned my 67 BSA Lightning, I took it out to do wheelies. It was for a photo shoot, but I did at least a couple dozen wheelies. At the end I was dumping the clutch at 7,000RPM to get it to the balance point, and it would leave about a 2ft long black mark(no traction control). It is a 4 speed & geared up for modern traffic speeds. It is good thing to learn!BTW, I am in my 60's!

  • @krispewkrem3

Awesome to see there’s new skills you’re still tackling. Just wanna say, the ABS wheelie bar is an amazing accessory to get to learn wheelies. My bike is my commuter and I’d rather not loop it or get hurt. The wheelie bar simply attaches to the swingarm and when the bike comes up far enough, the bar pivots and will eventually pull a cable attached to your rear brake. You can set it low to get comfy. You can set it past balance point so you have a chance to tsp the Greek before the bar does it for you. Or you can set it anywhere in between. It fits really any dirt bike/supermoto. I think of it as crash protection. My friend looped a WR250. Here’s the damage: broken kickstand bolts, damaged kickstand, broken clutch lever, misaligned steering, bent bars, bent brake lever, broken turn signals front and rear, bent subframe, broken and missing taillight, damaged and scraped fender front and rear, scraped headlight housing, scratched and pitted swingarm, missing tool case and tools, scratched side plastics, damaged clutch cable, chewed up grips, and there’s probably more minor things I haven’t noticed. And it was a lower speed crash. The wheelie bar is $300. I spent nearly that if not more in parts alone. Add in injuries and hospital bills, and it gets expensive. So to anyone learning wheelies, cover your rear brake and just start out slow. Stick to 1st or 2nd gear. Bring the front up, tap the brake. Always inspect your pads and lines and lever and endure the brake works BEFORE popping up. Stay safe and tske it easy. It takes lots of dedication and time and if you rush or force it, it’s probably not gonna end well.

About time you will learn loads.... I've been doing wheelies in the car park whilst doing your moto jitsu drills. If you're in the car park you might as well learn as much as you can. Wheelie, rolling stoppies, emergency stop, tight cornering it’s all great fun. Get used to balancing point on a bicycle and using the rear brake then take it to the motor bike. The bicycle has a much lower balance point, this is 45 degrees but the motor bike will be around 75-80 degrees. Every wheelie you use the rear brake is a win, don't worry about distance. Enjoy the learning. It's great fun.

This methodical way to approach learning a new thing applies to learning SO MANY new things. Martial arts, musical instruments, power tools, etc. Doing the fundamentals slowly until they become familiar and eventually become second nature. The old saying is really true. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

  • @RobRippin
    @RobRippin Жыл бұрын

Never thought I'd see the day. Best piece of advice I could give is practice making using the rear brake habit. Once that is second nature all you have to do is commit to getting the bike high enough and the instinct to use the rear brake will kick in when you get uncomfortable. I'd say go in first gear from a slow roll or even from a dead stop with a leg down and pop the clutch and immediately hit the rear brake. Keep repeating that process until hitting the rear brake becomes second nature. Then focus on getting the bike higher up, rear brake to bring it back down. Eventually you'll find balance point and be able to bring it back down with the brake. Once you hit that point you can focus on distance and longer wheelies. After you clutch up to the right height you keep the throttle cracked open a tiny amount and you modulate height with the rear brake. If you give to much brake and go too low, add a little throttle, when it gets too far back hit the brake and repeat this process. It's kind of like a seesaw between throttle and rear brake application. Stay smooth with all inputs as well.

Wheelies are definitely fun and challenging to perfect but the truth is your bike really isn't meant to be up in one wheel. Dirt bikes maybe at times but learning wheelies on a street bike has a learning curve that usually involves looping your bike and or getting injured. A lot of riders just aren't willing to wreck their bike or break bones to learn. Not everyone will have this problem but any kind of stunting has a high probability of crashing. I'm not surprised Motojitsu hasn't really done too much of this And I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't stick with it or do it that often. He's all about control and proper technique and being safe. Wheelies are highly unpredictable. Not gonna lie, I love them and probably do it too much, but it's always risky. I don't blame anyone for not doing them. But it is an incredible rush when you get it down and can do it at will. Just another skill to learn. Nothing wrong with that. But I'm never more worried than I am when I'm up on one wheel. I'm never nervous at the track or ripping around on the streets but wheelies can go wrong at any time. I've been lucky so far but I know I'm pushing my luck. Just be prepared to possibly have it go bad.

  • @ThePolymath1

Great to see you expanding your knowledge! I know you have impeccable control. You’ll get this in no time. One thing I would recommend is that you not only ‘cover the rear brake’ but actually get in the habit of applying the rear brake to bring the front end down. So clutch-in, throttle, clutch-out, hold the throttle open (not full), apply rear brake to bring the front down. Keep up the great work and great advise. Aloha. 🤙🏽

Wheelies take practice, and lots of it. I learned on dirt bikes as a kid, and just translated that to street bikes when I started riding them. 40 summers later, I rip wheelies far more frequently than I like to admit. I own 3 motorcycles with over 100whp, and all it takes is a snap of the wrist to objectify oneself should one choose to be that kind of person. Does not matter how you normally ride, if you power wheelie past some mouth breather that just cut you off in traffic while giving them the finger or the mean mug stare is Spec Ops level flex.

At first trust your rear break and chase your wheelies instead of getting right up to the balance point. That will give you an idea of what it feels to be up there more and you’ll get more comfortable. It’s important to have the bike rpm high enough when you give gas too.

Do not try to ride a wheelie without noticing your conscious thought for using the rear brake has become sub conscious. I did an hour at a time on a sub station road up a slight hill. No one used that road. Also I was in my 50s when I learned to balance point on my Grom. Good luck and have fun.

Wheelies are addicting. The second you learn to snap it up, you’ll wanna do it everywhere. I got caught in a torrential downpour and my WR250 was still too easy to snap up and wheelie. IN THE RAIN. Supermotos are absolutely ridiculous and it’s why it will forever be the one bike I always own. Enjoy that 701! Stay safe. Also just a tip, the farther you sit back and lean back, the lower the bike needs to come up to hit balance point. If your fork tubes are parallel with the road, on level ground, get ready to hit that brake cause you’re there. Also, uphill wheelies are chest codes. And downhill wheelies, I generally say stay away from until you’ve mastered clutch up and rear brake and riding longer and dropping back and coming forward.

I have however popped up while coming out of a turn, God that's a perfect moment. Also, while going on an onramp to merge into traffic. While going up the onramp it was a vertical rise already and I used the quick shifter from gear one to gear two it popped up. In any gear find the speed where you have the most power or acceleration. Accelerate up to that speed, chop the throttle for a half second and give it gas. It will power wheelie. Body mechanics help. Most important is to practice bringing the front up only a little and bringing it back down with the rear brake until it becomes muscle memory. Later when you lift the front higher, give it a little gas as the tire is going back down to soften the landing. It’s a nice feeling to wheelie. I only go to 11 o’clock because I don’t want to learn 12 o’clock because I would have to be willing to drop my bike in the learning process. I usually engine brake to bring it down and rear brake if I go too high like 12 o’clock. You are smart to learn slowly in the name of safety.

I used to pot wheelies all the time taking off on my RD250D (back in the early 1980s) ... mostly unavoidable if you want to accelerate ... but not particularly dangerous ... the trick is to keep the wheel down or move body weight forward ... not found a use for the brake doing wheelies but I guess that's something for me to learn.

Hey man, absolutley agree with the paitence needed. but get some more speed up and just flick the clutch with one finger! dont pull it right in at all just get to speed, then quickly twist the throttle to around 60% and as soon as you get there just one finger flick the clutch it will come up nicely then modulate the throttle accorldingly. I'll do a video on it to show others what i mean? here in the UK i did a "wheelie School" about a year ago on a closed airfield which taught me the fundemental process for it, now after loads of practice i've got it spot on.

He's one of us. One of your better videos. I am not a wheelie guy, but possibly start to try to pull up when going slower than slightly increase speed to pull and keep up. Looks like going 10-15. Try 7-10. 15% throttle to chop up roll to 25 to keep. Im talking out of a$% though.

A good way of starting as you are rolling along in 1st gear, quickly shut the throttle so that the bike pitches forward and compresses the front suspension, than give the throttle a snap as the forks rebound (sort of like a pogo stick).

Wheeling is trying to loop the bike but catching it. You don’t necessarily need the clutch (maybe a slip to cheat your way out of low rev climbing ) nor much throttle, you want the rear wheel to shoot forward under the motorcycle. No crazy practice needed, just an intention to loop the bike.

I’ve not done any wheelies yet but fairly new rider. Got a lot planned this year to bring up my skill on different advanced courses so wheelies or an after thought but something I still think is worth mastering. Gonna have to buy a cheap bike to practice on as I refuse to do it on my z900 until I have them down.

I started to learn wheelies last year, took a break from it for a minute to practice wheelies on a bicycle thinking it would help me, but if anything it made me more nervous on the motorcycle realizing how easy it is to loop out on a bicycle, something that weighs 20lbs vs my 500 lb beast, but when i was practicing i got to where i was at about 9 oclock, and chasing them, or would pop up to 9 oclock and scare me so i would chop the throttle and slam it down, hoping i can get them down this year, got all the cages for my motorcycle, now just need a 12 bar, n gonna get a hand brake after i get foot brake down

About the bike and wheelies. A supermoto can take a lot more beating than a sportbike when it comes to this kind of play. I had a KTM 690SMC and i abused that bike with stoppies and wheelies, never had a problem with the fork or dampers. Clutch is another thing, but they are easy to change on these bikes ;)

So, finally MotoJitsu wheelies hahaha. Yeah, wheelies where like the last thing i wanted to learn on my bike, simply cause of it being something useless and just for the fun of it and the implications of failure are way to high, is a fun thing to learn but once you learn it you will do it and all it takes is just one bad wheelie to destroy your bike, not just that but you can blast your suspension while doing wheelies the wrong way again and again while practicing (letting the front just free fall after the wheelie). I did some wheelie practice once, i got the front up for a second, but i let that there, only "wheelie" i do is at takes off, small short wheelies. I always said, you want me to do wheelies, then give me a bike, not mine, i can't afford crashing my bike just for a wheelie...anyway, Good luck on your wheelies practice ;)

I have tried to do the same thing on a z900 for about 2-3 weeks. Try to follow exactly the same advice. It gets pretty jerky sometimes. I am surprised it doesn't come off the ground more. Maybe 4-8 inches at best. Will get tripod to see better. First gear, 12-15 mph, drop clutch up to 6500 rpm. More concerned about jerkyness than looping it, so far. But to start chasing it, first gear is risky they say.

Always do clutch ups. Forget any other kind of wheelie for now. Forget everything about wheelies other than: - Where your butt sits (somewhat back but comfortable) keep this the same. - cover AND PRACTICE rear brake. - keep perpendicular to wheelie. Don't pull with arms, lean back with weight so you stay perpendicular. Think of clutch up the same as a take off, but rapid. Don't rev up then clutch out, just same as a take off, as you clutch out you throttle on. Depending on gears and revs... But on my 450, in the sweet spot of revs (low-mid), second gear is like 2x more aggressive than a normal take off, 3rd gear, 3x more aggressive than take off, 4th gear, 4x as aggressive as normal take off. Think, sometimes you might take off like 1.1 or 1.2x too aggressive in first and the front wheel will pop up. It's the same as a take off just aggressive. Once you get the wheel up consistently, once you can wheelie comfortably... THEN all the other bits will come naturally. Dampening forks, pulling back, different rev ranges, different lean angles, everything else comes naturally once you learn the wheelie.

You should learn to double blip, IRC has a great video of how to do it on their KZread channel. It's a very practical use for a "wheelie". You only get your tire up 6" to a foot for a second so it's not exactly a wheelie but it is very useful.

I would practice in first gear gonna be much easier to get the feeling of how fast the bike comes up. It's also tough on a supermoto because of how long the suspension travel is. You can try giving it a lot of throttle then chopping the gas to compress the suspension it will make it a lot easier to get the front end to come up you use front forks as a spring to help "bounce" the front wheel into the air.
