I did an apprenticeship as engraver in Suhl, germany. The ball vise is good for smaller tasks and letters but for making scrolls ect you should Build a vise that can rotate freely. We used a normal vise on a bearing with adjustable height and adjustable rotation. Thats how we did it in class. And thats how the professional engravers in germany do it. You can get the curves a lot better and kinks will Not Happen that easily. It will be a lot cleaner. Keep it up, you doin very good. love your vids.Greetings from germany. Hope this will help you, cheers Edit: another tip: perfect distance from your working piece is when you can put your fist under your chin and your elbow on the vise and keeping your back straight. Otherwise you will end up having serious back pain very soon ^^

As a Jeweler by trade for the last 15 years, I can safely say that engraving is one of the more challenging tasks I've attempted. The key I have found is to make sure you always have a very sharp graver and sometimes it helps to grind a small relief on the bottom of your graver. Something around 10 degrees or maybe less, everyone has different ideas about it but it seemed to help me.

  • @dawidwidera1819

Different types of gothic letters are one of the best for engraving practice. Also quotes, dedications on things you will craft will be most wanted I guess. I wish you quick recovery to full health!

If this is your first attempt at H&C engraving, you did very well. Looks like the ragged edges of your cuts may have been caused by either not having your graver properly sharpened or making too deep a cut (too aggressive). I like a parallel face on my graver as it makes nice even cuts and is easy to resharpen.Graver control comes with practice and nothing can replace it. If you want your engraving to look like you've been engraving for 20 years, you have to engrave for 20 years. There is only one shortcut and that is to train under a good instructor. Love you video's. Keep up the good work. Those that dare, win.

Black magic? Is this a dig on A Childers "Prayers for a fast recovery" or tea bags and clove oil? If it's the latter then ice is good for reducing swelling but should be used on the face while applying a moist tea bag to the wound. The tannins in tea are vasoconstrictors that help stop bleeding as well as being antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. Clove oil is of little use after an extraction but it's one of the foundations of dentistry. It's used for both antiseptic and pain killing and a temporary filling is essentially dental cement and clove oil. On the other hand if it was a dig against religion, grow up.

What I admire most about you Alec is the fact that you are willing to devote hours to practicing a skill just for the simple reason that you wish to learn it. You don't need to know how to do inlay or engraving but it is something that you know would make you a better craftsman so you do it. A wise man once said that here is no such thing as wasted knowledge. The same can be said of any skill. Knowing what is possible allows you to see more options and possibilities often in what may seem to be totally unrelated crafts

One thing I found in my brief and far less successful foray into engraving was the tendency for my hand to not move as the cut is made, so the graver gets shallower and shallower until it skitters away from me over the surface and scratches the metal. But this video has inspired me to sharpen up my tools and try again.

Hammer and chisel engraving, the recommendation is to set up your work free standing to be able to walk around it.. it makes it a lot easier to make curves and angle changes. Also polish your graders. 3000 grit makes a big difference. The higher the polish, the better they cut (provided the angles are ground right)

Well Dona as usual alex. I have a small forge myself that's nothing more than a clay lined pit, a hairdryer as the blower, and a piece of angle iron for the anvil. I'm currently using a 3lb cross pein hammer and a pair of small vice grips to make a pair of larger forge tongs. Not going so well but your channel is a big help.

Hi Alec, a DDS from The States here, please keep up with warm salt water rinses several times per day and ibuprofen ~600mg - 800mg every 4 hours for the next few days. I know your doc has given you info, but this has work very well for my patients. All the best.

You have my sympathies Alec. I had all four of mine removed. I look forward to engraved projects. Though if you want metal inlay in wood, finely ground metal powder and superglue is a not so elegant solution when used to fill carvings.

Its very hard to make personal comments on such a public forum that is KZread... but i have to say that the content , the way you teach and ideals you use in your work and life are fantastic to be able to enjoy and LEARN from! Its obvious you have many years of pouring love into your craft. One day as I slowly embark down the path into metal working and casting i will have the pleasure of meeting you in person! Keep up the amazing work and get well soon , so you can get back to singing to us on video as you work. 😜😄🙉 Thank you Alec!

You need to learn to hold and use the chasing hammer: it's not actually held and used like a blacksmith's hammer, but held with the big bulb end nestled between ball of the thumb and 3rd finger and your hand/wrist basically vibrates against the end of the graver. This gives you a huge amount of control as the graver moves tiny amounts so you can follow small and subtle curves vs. the big jumps and angles you're getting as you "whack" the end of the graver the way you're currently doing it, and the long shaft of the hammer gives you more than adequate power to engrave even hardened metals (as long as you have a proper graver) due to the long springy lever effect..

Alec!!! i got to tell you something, the pourpose of the vise is to rotate it with one hand while the other hand is actually engraving. What you need to do if you are hoping to use that technique (more like hammer and chisel) is to have a standing and solid base glued to the piece you are working on. You can try to use sealing wax, or something that keeps the piece still while you are working on. The key to sucess in that particulary way to engrave is to move your whole body freely arround the piece. And having the piece at your chest height so you can see it better. Try to move arround the piece when making curves, never turn the piece nor your arms. Wrist still, arms still and continuos strikes will make the difference. Sory for bad english im from Argentina, good luck man, love ur vids, keep it up

Something to consider- you might try using different graver tip styles. The diamond tip might be contributing to your 'jitters'- maybe try a teardrop or even rounded graver for a couple goes.
