    ***** Resist techniques are primarily used with stains and antiques. The dyes are designed to penetrate the leather, so unfortunately resists are not effective on them. To get color in an isolated area, try painting it on with a paintbrush.

    Can this be done on used leather? I have a used saddle I purchased that I would like to do this with. What is your recommended product to use to clean the leather prior to painting it? What product do you use as a sealer on a saddle? I need to know all paint, sealer, dye, etc products I will need so I can order them from you online. Thanks!

    +Holly DeGonia Hello Holly! It's somewhat difficult to say without knowing the quality of the leather, how it was sealed, how it was maintained, etc. We have a wide variety cleaners and conditioners that would likely work at www.tandyleather.com/en/category/conditioners-n, however the safest bet might be to take it to a local saddle shop where a saddle expert can see it in person and give recommendations of how to rejuvenate and refinish it.

    Hi George great videos, I'm just starting and wondering what the difference was between Antique and Dye. I recently tried to do a key fob and when it came to the resist and dye part the resist I felt went on really well I left it overnight and then applied a Tannery dye professional water based stain (Mahogany) however when I went to wipe the excess off, the blocked areas weren't so blocked and the dye had stained everything, it sort of attempted to block out the dye but no where near as good as in your video. Do you have any ideas?thank you Sean

    Now how many coats of the super sheen do I want to use to get my stuff to look professionally stained in the two tone type look, like the design being a natural color, but the background (and the detailed cuts in the design) a nice but dark enough color so that the design stands out?

    shym0nk3y also is it the gel stain that works best for this type of work?

  • @TandyLeatherCo

    @TandyLeatherCo

    9 жыл бұрын

    shym0nk3y George says that he typically uses two coats of super sheen and lets each one dry over night. The style you are referring to is often achieved by hand painting the background with a dye or stain and, after allow it to try, using super sheen to coat it. After allowing the Super Sheen to dry, use an antique gel over the project to create the two toned brown effect.

    +shym0nk3y one good coat of Resolene (dried about 20 minutes..or more) resist great. can add a 2nd coat if you want to be super safe.acrylic dyes only. I heard Tandy stopped selling their "block out" because people figured out its just resolene with a different label (by the smell/look).

    What is the different from using a colored dye and a cova color? Stain and antique?

  • @TandyLeatherCo

    @TandyLeatherCo

    9 жыл бұрын

    Great question! Cova Color Paint is an acrylic paint which sits on top of the leather, creating a vibrant color. Colored dye penetrates the leather, so the color is in the leather rather than on the leather, which makes it more resistant to scratching. Antiques and HiLite dye the leather, however they give significantly more emphasis on the tooled area of the leather.

  • @BigCountryCane68

    @BigCountryCane68

    Tandy Leather Thank you for your response! So would dye be used more for something that does not have tooling? Is there a difference from Antiques and HiLite dyes, though they are for the same purpose?

  • @TandyLeatherCo

    @TandyLeatherCo

    9 жыл бұрын

    Jordan Becker Antiques and HiLite dyes are very similar in application, however the Antique is a gel whereas the HiLite is a liquid. Dyes typically color your leather and the tooling all the same uniform color where as Antiques and HiLite feature the tooling, as well as the natural inconsistencies in the leather. You can use Antiques and HiLite without tooling to dye the project while still giving it a more natural leather look.

    What technique might be used to get this white on black effect (right hand wallet)? The example shown is embossed naugahyde. I own an embossing plate for the pattern and have had good success stamping it into leather. However I'd like to add color. If the technique is the opposite i.e. black over white then that's okay. facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10206310798148722&l=5e29673f04
