As you showed in your video it is something that everyone can learn. The reason most western born and raised folks don't know is because of chairs and toilets where people sit on, while Asian cultures are accustomed to sitting on the ground or on low stools and there are toilets which require you to squat. Just about everyone in Asia, South West Asia learns how to do it and you'll also see this in Central America from the Native Americans.

I can do it, but I need to separate my legs well and point my feet to the sides. I would be ashamed to squat in public like I can now. My goal is to squat with my legs close together. Ps: If I wrote something embarrassing, please disregard. English isn't my first language 😪

I remember reading the expression “sitting on their heels,” as a youngster. At the time I wasn’t sure what that meant, but after seeing people squatting on the ground is Asia and California, I observed that the those squatting most deeply are indeed sitting on their heels. That is, they are resting their butts on their heels. I think that’s how they are able to sit like that comfortably, without strain for extended periods. You still have more progress to make before you achieve full Asian squat.

    yes,,, as a indian am all confused because we dont consider this as a workout or something. for us this is just a sitting method. its like eating something off ur hands, we do it but we dont because we have plates {in this case chair}

@@SunnyEmCeeMC The trouble is that in Western societies, bc we don't start at any age to squat down on our heels ,or else , we do try , usually too late , and we lose flexibilty ...don't use it and you lose it , so we fall over backwards bc the ankles are so stuff. I'm 74 and just starting to learn , with my ankles on wedges at 1 st .

  • @rankpa

I think that any person, from any ethnicity, can lose the muscle/tendon/joint flexibility and strength required to assume this deep squatting posture. I think most toddlers just use this posture naturally. My own background ethnicity is German and Irish. Into my 50s I was able to squat down to a 5-gallon glass jug of wine standing on the floor (50 pounds) and stand up with it. I’m in my 80s now and, because of disuse, I have gotten stiff and weak so that I can no longer do a deep squat. But one of my goals for 2024 is to try and recover the strength and flexibility necessary to do deep squats again.

Thanks so much for this video . It is very encouraging to see you managing to squat without falling backwards , after only a week ! I am using wedges under my heels as my ankles are very stiff . I am 74 but I believe it's never too late to learn , if one is not too damaged by arthritis .

How many hours did you practise? Did you do any stretches etc.? I need to know😂. I've been Practising for a over a year(stretches, getting into the squat for periods of time etc.. ) now and can't do it. Yes, I've definitely gotten better and have more flexibility/mobility than I did over a year ago but I'm not able to do it perfectly unless unsupported/with a weight as a counterbalance. I'm however aware it can take longer for some people. I think in your case you already had all the mobility needed , you just needed to practise actually being in the squat position and getting comfortable in it.

I'm a big guy (6'3" and around 250 lately) and picked up on it right away when I was stationed in Korea working with the KATUSA and ROK soldiers there. I still find myself using the "Asian squat" today, 30 years later when doing various tasks that would require bending or stooping for extended periods of time. It's as if once you do it, it just naturally becomes comfortable. CHEERS!

First time trying the Asian Squat, I also had the same feeling from the video, but overtime it gets easy. The more you do it, The longer it gets. It's like a burning sensation and some numbness but that's if you go longer. The longer to hold it, You'll feel more strength in the legs and makes it better and comfortable to get used to, it makes digestion better when eating compared to sitting and eating. Reading a book or watching some videos or movies while doing the Asian Squat could be great to kill the time while you do it. Though, once you want to stand up your legs and quads will just be sore for a few seconds or a while.

Born and raised in the southern US, I’m white, and I’ve been Asian squatting since I was a kid. At 26 I do this every time I use the bathroom. It became a comfort position when I was young, for when my stomach was hurting(which was all the time) and it just stuck around since then. So I’ve been doing it for over 20 years at this point, every single day.

The reason You were having trouble doing the squat at first is because you're Achilles tendons are too tight. First thing you need to do is get a foot soaking tub with hot water, as hot as you can tolerate without scolding yourself and just soak your feet for about 5 minutes and then try try to do the Asian squat, while your tendons are all relaxed and loose, so you can stretch them easier.

Whats interesting is that I can do it without any practice. And it was always like that from my childhood. Now I'm 38 and still doing it without problems. I believe this must be due to the genetics. I'm more flexible in that crucial parts that you need to have for this type of excercise. My brother for example can't do it. I'm a tennis player from 4 years so maybe this helped me stay in shape and have strong glutes and other leg muscles. Nice video btw., beuatiful voice you have.

Asian squat in reality has nothing to do with your race lol. Anyone can do it. Look at toddlers. It's just depending on the culture you grew up in. Spending less time in the squat and more time in school sitting in chairs for hours and days, you eventually lose the ability. It goes by other names : Deep squat Slav squat (gopnik) Third World squat Ass to grass squat Bodyweight squat Resting squat Full squat Primal squat Etc...

I used to get into this position a lot when i was a kid, but i turned into a computer nerd on my teenager years and would just spend the entire day sitting on a chair. I'm 28 now and just realised i can't squat like that, my ankles are too stiff and my knees can't even fold all the way cus it's stiff and hurts. I can't believe i let it get to this point, i'll start stretching and practicing right now

Yes, I need to know😂. I've been Practising for a over a year(stretches, getting into the squat for periods of time) now and can't do it. Yes, I've definitely gotten better and have more flexibility than I did over a year ago but I'm not able to do it unsupported. I'm however Awre it can take longer for some people. I think in her case she already had all the mobility, she just needed to practise being in the squat and getting comfortable in it.

I went to a very strict school in which if you misbehaved, they'd make you do a squat for a few minutes (the non-asian squat), but ngl the Asian Squat™ really hurts at first

Any variation of the squat is beneficial. One heel up, the other down, then switch. You can get the full squat with practice. I did.

I would start by resting my back against the wall. I would do it daily for a couple of weeks then start trying it without the wall holding you up.

It helps if you are flexible in the hips. Asians are used to it because they do it all their life whilst doing house work, using a floor toilet or simple squatting while having a break from standing, they also sit on the floor whilst eating and their hips are therefore very open and flexible. Westerners on the other hand, use chairs to relax, we don't do any house work in a squat and we eat dinner in a chair or even worse on the sofa in a slouch. Westerners slouch a lot more and generally are inflexible, unless they have done a lot of yoga, it's unlikely that the average westerner can do a squat. The girl in the video although from asian heritage, has grown up in the west and has all the western habits. I am English but i lived in Vietnam for 3 years, i was impressed with the way they squatted and slowly learnt how to do it, now i have great flexibility and my posture is also good.
