I think, a language can get expensive depending on how many resources available and how in demand it is. For example, for me, their are a lot more resources too learn Swedish compared when I was in high school. Their was barely anything like, now but still, compared to other languages like, Russian, French, or Spanish resources still tend too be harder to find whereas their are more easy to find resources to learn Russian than one' can shake can shake a stick at.

I am lucky in that way. When I go back to a language, everything comes back too me. This happened when I went back to French for a while. Also, being Canadian, I had to learn both English and French growing up and learned Russian on a more consistent basis near mid high school and start of college so, things come back easy. People have asked me how I remember a lot of stuff but I think it is how my mom taught me too study in near the end of elementary school that helped my my brain open it's "memory files" so to speak. She told me to go over the words or subject, repeat them a few times, and do not grab for the study sheet! Also, to try and visualize in my head. This was hard at first but with practice, it got easier and I got better on tests. Furthermore, I found out this method especially, the focusing and visualizing helped me to recall other things. I know it sounds easy but it takes time to train your brain but it does work! Side note: Before using these study/recall methods my memory was pretty bad!

In Canada or at least at my college most online classes you could do them “whenever”you want day or night. I say that loosely because assignments and exams have deadlines but for the most part.

I do want to try and learn French again next Fall for jobs and other reasons but right now I want to be more comfortable with Swedish first. At least for the next few months.

Good luck finding inexpensive courses, I’ve heard open uni is the move. If you ever want to practice you can write me! I’m also learning Finnish and have recently moved to Helsinki. I think we’re around a similar level.

I wonder if those courses are expensive for the normal finnish citizen. Thanks for exposing this side of learning Finnish

"normal Finnish citizens" ? What could this mean? Finnish citizen is a well defined and simple, but normal? But since citizenship doesn't tell anything about buying power or wealth, it can hardly have anything to do with how expensive things appear to them.

Most Finnish citizens live in Finland. For most of them Finnish is the native language. Swedish speaking or bilingual families are also common. Finland has public and free school system where at least both official national languages, Finnish and Swedish, are mandatory part of curriculum. So the need for taking Finnish for foreigners type courses by Finns is highly uncommon. The difficulty of learning any language depends largely from the learners language background, since that has "wired" your brain to function in some ways. Having multilingual background probably helps the brain to be more flexible.

@Wiinser I think price is same for anyone although I doubt Finnish people would sign up for Finnish courses :D

@ There are people like Finnish immigrant families, who have got their children in other countries in different language environment and haven't taught them Finnish. Those kids can have Finnish citizenship, but don't not the language. Sometimes such people would like to understand their parent's family language and culture more and try to learn Finnish as adults.

Have you tried to maximize the use of Leo in learning Finnish by making him use just Finnish with you? Or could it create too much unwelcome tension and frustration between the two of you?

You are complaining about a lesson that costs 5 euros per hour? I learn German and French and it costs more than this. You are paying for someones time, it is only fair. 5 euros an hour is very little.

I’m not complaining. Just sharing how much it costs.

Isn't the main cost getting a Finnish lover? They can become expensive and be high maintenance...😉

@@johnl7599 Of course I know about Leo. The cost of having a lover is likely to be a recurring cost 😜 But Leo unfortunately is multilingual, which makes him less effective in encouraging to use and learn Finnish. But getting Burmese beauty knowing just Finnish, would probably have been impossible for even him.
