Learning Bucktail - Tying the Bucktail Firecracker (Deceiver) - Pike, zander, bass

Спорт

As I have been tying a lot of these bucktails recently I decided to make a tutorial, which may help beginners. Learning bucktail takes some time, but it really isn't that difficult once practiced. The fly we are tying is a proven pattern for pike and zander, and no doubt will catch big bass too.
Material:
Ahrex SA280 1/0
GSP100 white
Bucktail in white and grey
Hedron Polar flash in silver, gold and pearl
Hedron Strung Fuzzy in yellow and orange
Bigstreamers Nayat in white, grey and black
Optional: Angelina Fibre in Peacock and Pearl
6mm Silver flat eyes
Glue: Liquid Fusion, Evostik Serious Glue, Gorilla Clear

Very nice. You are spot on about the yellow/orange combination. It creates a beautiful (and fishy, to my mind) effect. (I can't believe I wrote "spot on", I've been listening to too many Brits lately- LoL)

Whats a zander never herd of it Paul, I use to tie the same style fly for big stripers in the surf , i would even use this small one as a dropper with a piece of 16 pound mono from the back bend of the fly. I would catch everything fluke flounder blowfish , blues , when the Blitz is on the stripers always go for that big fly, great little pattern . This fly tied holo style flipped back and tied down works well also gives a wider profile.

I tie flies for zander quite skinny as need to get them down in deeper water sometimes. Zander are very much like your walleye just grow bigger. They originated from continental Europe, but introduced into the UK back in the 1970's or early 80's I think. They are classed as invasive, which is stupid. There is a lot of stupid legislation over here.

Awesome flies Paul! Do you have a good alternative to the serious glue? I looked for it over here in the states and it’s hard to find.

I did try E6000 i think its called when I could get Serious Glue during Covid times. Though that one effects my allergies (eye swelling). Worth a try if you don't suffer like I do.

Very well done titrator Paul! I’m tying up a few and was curious as to how long you have your Firecracker soak and dry before you glue on the eyes? I'm hopping to catch some bass these here in Georgia USA. Thanks and tight lines 😊

I tie in bulk and stages usually so tend to shape with water prior to the eye work. Obviously, I hang and let dry first before eyes are started. Nothing stopping you glueing the eyes first.

What top materials would you have to tie predator flies? there is absolutely no list for 6-7 standard materials to tie a multitude of patterns? thanks

Bucktail, nayat, a synthetic like SF Blend and some flash. Polar flash is very versatile. Those are the main materials I use for pike flies.

I’m also allergic to UV-pain in the ass given how effective and easy it is. Solarez, Gulff, Raid Zap all of it gives me swollen puffy eyes at worse, at best I get wicked dry red skin on my face.

  • @paul_monaghan

Many moons ago I tried them on tube flies. Not really a fan as they look ugly to me. I'm sure the fish aren't as fussy.

You're not missing anything here in the USA. I love your style of fly tying and how laid back you are in your instruction videos! Very easy to follow, you make it look so easy, but yet my flies don't turn out as nice!!😂😂
