Learning about the Larpquebus, a larp safe Arquebus

Ойын-сауық

At Tank Larp me met Justin, creator of the larpquebus
The Larpquebus is a larp safe version of the medieval arquebus. Sometimes referred to as a matchlock. The Larpquebus itself fires Nerf Rival rounds with the same output power as a standard Nerf gun.
Stuart talks to Justin and we learn about its history, how to fire it and also where you can go to buy or build one.

    Very cool, I wish we could have seen it with the talcum powder to get the full effect. Also, I'm diggin' Stuart's outfit, looks comfy. It reminds me of some larp garb that I had put together almost twenty years ago and meant to iterate more on but then never really got the chance. I'd be curious to get a better view of it in a future video. Anyway, neat stuff!

    I wonder if there's a version of the Larpquebuse where you can tweak the power of the shot. In the LARP that I play, for this kind of weapon, the shot cannot exceed 20 meters.

    It uses a basic nerf mechanism for Rival rounds. Its 3D printed and I suspect that if you reduced spring power you could redice the firing range on it

    Some LARPs claim the pellets are risky for eyes. What’s a good counter argument? What’s the pound force of the pellet? My crossbow isn’t allowed to exceed 30 pounds force; how does the beautiful LARPquebus compare?

  • @LARPBook

    @LARPBook

    I think since we shot this a good many larps now recommend or require eye protection for this kind of round. I remember chatting to a Nerf weapons tester who was recommending about 1joule of energy per round . That's about 0.23 pounds of force

    Isn't the mechanism a bit 16th/17th century? I thought the earlier models were a bit simpler (single lever serpentine).

    I'm not sure about I'm not really an expert on early fire mechanisms, but its a fair point to consider.

    to make it short: It's complicated, as in "we don't really know". to make it long: the history of gunpowder weapons in Europe is full of surprises. As an example: a few weeks ago some bloke in Denmark found a ship-cannon that is almost 1 century older than ANY other found until today, wich changes the history of medieval naval-artillery. As far as we know today it is this: we defenetly DO know that snaplocks were around by the year 1500, by pictures in the Zeugbuch of Bern from 1500, these were button-locks (you don't have a normal trigger, instead you have a button next to the snapping serpentine). However they may have been around even earlier. There are pieces of actual arquebi that may be older. These are still "traditional" hook-guns, in contemporary stocks and with defenetly a snapping-trigger. Stock and barrel to seem to be from the 2nd half of the 15th century BUT the problem here is dating the lock. These pieces are in private collections (or lost since some pictures of them date from 20s and 30s Germany). So people don't have access to them and we can't check if the lock is contemporary or if it was fitted later. So to get to a conclusion: were guns around in the late 15th century? Yes. Did they look like we imagine guns today? From the 2nd half: Yes. Did they have snap-locks? Maybe. Is is OK to take some creative liberty for a larp-gun? Yes.

    would that be able to fire a larpsaft arrow?

  • @ArchitectGG

    @ArchitectGG

    Late response, but I'd assume not. Most LARP systems have a draw limit on their bows. I imagine the larpquebus would cause an arrow to fire far too powerfully to ever be permitted. Naturally though, you'd have to check at the specific system you had in mind.
