Well, actually the main reason why I watch your videos is to improve my English skills. You talk fast but in a very eloquent way and with somewhat elaborate vocabulary. Oh ok, it is also because I like the positive tone of your videos.
Close to 100% perfect !! Congrats ! i would just add one thing : with Duolingo for instance, if you' ve finished your course, and you think you' re fluent now, do it the other way ! If your first language is English and you learn French, then select French as your first language, and learn English ! that' s a way to see if you actually speak, read and understand French

You did it! Thanks for the content! You really helped. Cheers from Brazil!
I've been reading English books for at least twenty years, but what has really helped me to improve my English is to watch KZread videos, and leave a comment from time to time! I think the most important is to find things that you're interested in whatever the language. Books, series, KZreadrs that you would watch or read because you love the theme, the author... It's a good way not to get bored! Franchement je ne pourrais pas m'infuser des trucs en anglais sur des sujets auxquels je ne m'intéresse pas dans ma langue maternelle. That being said, Happy new year Andrea!

Your english is amazing
I took two years of Spanish in high school and two years of Japanese in college. I currently studying Japanese again. One thing that is helpful would be to practice speaking with a conversation partner. You can talk about different topics with your conversation partner and have him or her ask you questions about those topics so that you can elaborate on your ideas. Suppose you finished reading a book last Saturday and the last Saturday before that, you went to the beach. You can tell your conversation partner about those things and have him ask you questions about those things.
Even if you don't understand a language, some sentences/expressions stuck in your head hearing it ten times per videos or series and before you realise it somehow you understand the meaning, i learned and still learn english from tv shows and movies (before that ...school^^).
I am so happy to find your channel. You are wonderful person
I just had your video as well as one from Katrin Berndt called "Video for Beginners: Practice Your Swedish" in my subscription feed at the same time - I just started to learn swedish - you both read my mind it seems. Perfect timing is quite funny sometime! Thank you for the tips ❤️ even if I know some of them I still need practice in english, the most useful to me is to put the subtitle in english-I accidentally found this one because I just could not wait 4 days before someone translate to french the last episodes of the series I was watching at the time! 😂
Nice Andrea. Very eloquent accent of you. Very good tips too. Happy New Year.
Sooo Chris here from twitter. I didn't want to flood your whole tweet with French stuff I agree with you 100%. What helped me learn English was watching movies with no subs. When I had to give exams for the Michigan proficiency exam the first 10 vocabulary words were from movies, I'm not joking at all on that part. So besides your French vid, which if I manage to understand half of it I will be more than happy hehe, any French daily vlogger recommendations? (since we live in the vlog era now) I want your recs since you know the accents will be good to learn from them and all the other stuff, you know :) PS. Yeah I remember my English teacher he did his studies on Cambridge and he teaches English here in Greece. He was always like learn vocab, learn vocab blah blah. Now I understand how important it is. (Although I know terms, but it's easier if you know them. )
One of my favorite movies is Pulp Fiction. I could say some of the lines in both French and English because I watched it over and over :) You don’t even need subtitles if you’ve seen a movie many times, the only reason you’d need them is to get some idiomatic expressions where the basic words don’t mean the same thing at all.
Putting French subtitles on a familiar film is a great idea, going to give this a go!
Trips are very important. Speaking with locals improve your knowledge of languages so fast.
I definitely favor more of the nitty gritty approach, but I also think that if you are taking a class or have a teacher, it can be great to do your own study and watch videos, etc. it helps things to "click" more in your brain.
Thanks! I've found plenty of helpful French movies & shows on Netflix too!
This is a huge subject, many different people have different learning styles. You must have textbooks, but I prefer to talk from the beginning. (I am relearning French, so I had school and night school years ago; for lots of French lessons). I found that talking to a native speaker was the way to accelerate my language learning. I checked out a number of Language Exchange websites and took my time till I found native speakers whose time schedule matched mine. I live in Australia so the time difference to Europe is considerable, but people in the USA would have a closer time difference to Europe than Australia. Learning French has changed my life, for the better!!

Gracias por subiendo este video. Soy un estudiante en Misuri en los estados unidos. Que dijiste sobre mirando videos en otras lenguas es muy útil. Yo miro Super Holly y una cosa sobre sus videos me gusta es que ella sube videos en ingles y en espanol sobre la misma tema. Yo lo busco muy útil. Tambien, mi telefono es en Espanol. Entendo la mayoria de palabras y busco palabras nueva todo el tiempo. Okay, I'm going to retype this and maybe type a little more in english now because honestly who knows if it makes sense. Thank you so much for uploading this video! I am a senior from Missouri. What you said about watching videos in other languages is very helpful. I watch Super Holly and one thing about her videos I like is the fact that she uploads a video in english and in spanish about the same topic fairly often. I enjoy watching the english video then watching her spanish video, but that can take a long time! Another thing I find helpful is the fact that I have my phone and all of my social media in Spanish. I understand most of the words and it helps me understand in context more words that I don't understand. Also, it keeps my friends from messing around on my phone :) Mantene el gran trabajo! Tambien, no conozco escribir accentos en mi computadora, entonces no juzge por favor!

Also, I have a penpal from Spain. I need to write him back, it's been a while but it's very helpful for many reasons. Firstly, I get a lot of practice writing in Spanish and applying words I know (I'm sometimes too lazy to get out a dictionary). I also find it very helpful to see his mistakes in English. Sometimes the mistakes he makes hint at the structure of words or sentences in Spanish.
Can you speak about your French language learning journey? Like how long it took you to become intermediate, then advanced? PLEASE!

I am learning English and watching this video to practice my listening skills (and also get some tips)
For the grammar part, I bought some of the "Saison: Méthode de Français" textbooks published by Didier. Saison 1 covers A1/A2, Saison 2 A2/B2, etc. I found them useful even without a teacher. They're much more approachable than most textbooks I've used in the past with lots of different kinds of reading and listening material and lots of information about contemporary French culture. There is a companion book of exercises with answers, such as "Saison 2 : Cahier D'activités" associated with each textbook (additional cost). One thing to note is that the books are completely in French, even Saison 1. It was a struggle to learn grammar in French, but I thought it was useful to engage in French completely. FWIW, these are the books used by Alliance Française. And, no, I am not associated with the publisher or with Alliance in any way. Another online source of grammar is from the University of Texas: www.laits.utexas.edu/tex/index.html. Personally, I found the immersion part (listening to French podcasts and watching French youtubers) more important than the grammar because oral comprehension is much harder to learn on your own than grammar. OTOH, my grammar needs a lot of improvement.
Such a helpful video! Any excuse to watch youtube works for me so if I can use it to learn a language I'm IN!
I spent a few years learning French starting about 11 years ago and I still remember a little bit. But I'd say that if you are going to learn another language, you should have a purpose for it. Just learning it because it seems like a cool thing to do eventually probably will not sustain you. I had a reason for a while and eventually that reason went away and eventually my motivation to continue went away. You need to be learning so that you can speak and otherwise communicate with native speakers of the language or maybe doing some translating from that language into your native language. I found Wordreference.com very helpful for definitions, conjugation, and forum discussions about meanings of words and help with translation.
Deberías de hacer un video completamente en Español, para practicarlo, digo.
Learning a new language is a continuous process. I learned english some years back but still come across new words when reading.
Me encantan tus videos, eres super linda por fuera y por dentro. Por favor haz un video en frances. Gracias
Another great way to learn vocabulary, for me, was to listen to music in another language. For the rythm or the poetic feeling, song writers tends to use words that are used less often, you can take a look at the lyrics and learn new words and phrases. And for those who likes to sing 😊 it helps with the pronunciation and improve your talking speed. I learnt the irregular verbs in English by singing in the shower 😅

Do you have any tips for getting out of translating everything back into your native language? I find it difficult to develop meaning for french words beyond their english translations.
@AndreaHeckler
6 жыл бұрын
This is a really tough one, but I think going for full immersion (when you're ready for that stage) is the only thing that has been able to help me. That's also why I recommend watching movies / series with subtitles in the other language and not your native one! It helps stop that constant habit of wanting to translate everything back.
@Earbly
6 жыл бұрын
Honestly it mostly comes from a lot of practice. A lot, a lot of speaking and listening and reading. Eventually your familiarity with the language will get to such a level that the language takes on it's own life and understanding. As far as I've seen, it's not really a specific "skill" you work on, it's more an emerging sign of high proficiency in the language. But one way that would probably help is to go over vocab or short sentences and try and cut out the English translation from your head, and try and replace it with simply the understanding of the foreign language word alone. Also you're at a disadvantage as far as "integrating" and evolving a new language into it's own emotional, meaningful entity because that really happens the most when you're learning your mother tongue (or tongues) as a child. But yeah as far as translating in your head, it will eventually go away when your brain is familiar enough with the language it doesn't need to expend energy translating it, it can simply understand it. Just keep at it, and keep your material interesting! Bonne chance!
I like learning langauge from audio dictionarys on youtube on that language.
Great video! I know that finding native speakers around could be very hard, but there are some websites like conversationexchange.com that can be used to find conversation partners. The website looks old fashioned but it has actually helped me a lot to :D

Do you ever mix up French and Spanish? I'm a heritage speaker of both, and I mix them up. *I say things like "robinete" (we've had lows around -10 °C and have had to drip faucets) and "vepecista" (the acronym "VPC" makes just as good sense in Spanish as in French). *I occasionally say "dube/mise/poní" instead of "debí/metí/puse" because "dus/mis/pondis". *A few months ago I visited a French church (which turned out to be Haitian) and found myself using the passé simple a lot more than is normal in French.

I found Duolingo very helpful, but I kind of lost interest,as it got harder.I learned basic French at school,so,I knew some, but I found out a lot more from there.I think immersion would probably help me a lot, sometimes, unconscious learning is the way to go.Trouble with French is all the masculine/feminines and the vous and tous! Too much for my brain lol.

I recommend 'Hola Soy Germán' his videos touch a lot of diferent topic. Warning: he doesn't speak spanish from spain, he has a different accent. If you wan't someone from spain, RubiusOMG.

Immersion as it should be done is great, but only for people who speak the language already. You're better off watching Spanish TV shows... cheaper too!
French is my second laugnage too, I agree with your approach as mine was first total immersion for about a year and now I learning some "nitty gritty" using "Learn French with Pascal" (kzread.info/dron/virLHlKtDvRBB6mHDqgdpg.html) on KZread who dives into verbs and expressions one at a time and does a great job of demystifying some things for me. It also helps that he is from Brittany, where most of my French enfluence is from as well (Rennes to be exact) ... I find listening to newcasts on France-Info.fr is helpful for me because much of my learning is from developing a habit of what sounds correct to my ears. Also a newscaster is typically someone who has no strong regeional accent and their voice is compressed so that you can hear all of the sounds. Movies are OK but their voices to me are not that clear and they use a LOT of slang (almost trash talk).. Voila, ma petite contribution!
lol I wish you would do the videos in french^^ then I could clean the room while listining to you haha Actually have you ever thought about having a french channel plus this one ? :O There is another american girl who did that but her vids a very girly.......doesnt suit me too well :/ urs are a little more universal sexe I feel like

I do not think French is better than Spanish. If you are going to learn one of these 2 languages, choose the one that will be more useful to you.

La caricature du français arrogant typique avec ses airs de supériorité. Confirmer ce genre de stéréotypes ne va pas donner envie aux gens d'apprendre la langue française.
