Watching your experience is a learning experience for any instructor, coach, or sensei! Growing up, I learned kobudo alongside karate, so it's important for me to observe your difficulty as a first-time learner to better teach others who might share your difficulties. It's also nice to see Enkamp Sensei's program and how it compares to what I would do... I'm always happy to see karate thrive because we benefit from each other's success!

Bo is very interesting, in my opinion. It contains most basic principles and teaches the control of shoulders and tanden better then karate. Yusuke, maybe this Bo is just too heavy for you? You say it is so heavy... My sensei's sensei says that if the weapon is to light, there's no force, and if the weapon is too heavy, it's too much tension.

Ganbatte! Just keep at it and don't try to cram in too much new stuff at once. While I haven't started bō in any formal capacity yet, I've spent years on its smaller relative, the jō (from Aikidō); some movements/techniques take a very long time to master (particularly ones that require big moments of some parts of the body at the same time where other parts of the body have to do small movements). Regarding the movements that require wrist rotation (specifically those with a thumb-forward grip: "junte" as we call it in aikidō; "gyakute" would be the grip with the thumb pointing toward yourself) maybe try inclining your grip a little so you can point your index finger along the bō, then think of your index finger as the axis of rotation. Last tip, with junte, the grip strength should be in your pinky (small) finger and ring finger; so try to strengthen those two fingers. It doesn't need to be anything complex, just start doing routine tasks that you would normally grip with most of your fingers, but instead just use those last two fingers (with thumb still engaged, as appropriate).

I'm glad you went to Okinawa. I think it's essential for any Karateka to learn from the original Okinawan styles to gain a greater understanding of the art. Japanese Shotokan, Kyokushin, and Wado Ryu are all good, but they are all oriented around Japanese culture and lost much of the Okinawan and Chinese influence

You did an admirable job. One suggestion you may want to try: You basically hold the bo in thirds, but your hands are a little wide. You should be within the middle 1/3, with a full 1/3 free and clear on either end. This will allow you to use more hip rotation and less shoulders. It will also help your blocks feel more natural. Ganbatte!

Nice! Still looks like a complicated first kata to get into kobudo but more power to you. Quick question: you mentioned the weight, which should not be that heavy in my experience, but what about the length? It looks like a bit too long a bo to practice kobudo form the video, but I could not get a good look at it. In my style the recommended length is your height + 1 or 2 inches at most.

Haven't paid much attention to the block with the wrist rotation before, or a weight lifting bar or heavy rubber bar could be harder, wooden swords could be pretty heavy, at least paint scrapers are pretty good exercise without as much internal karate exercise though. Although really a short blade in the off hand like Musashi in the pictures, or even a longer sword sometimes, wouldn't be as heavy in real life? With a nodachi and katana, lol. Or a field sword and long sword, although musashi said something about spears being generally good for the battlefield in the five rings, while talking about two swords though. Or naginata, or poleaxes with armor or medieval knight in full harness anyway, although the naginata looks like it could be hard to beat in the field even if the blade chips or breaks. Or at least could be good with a spike on the bottom rather than alot of greataxes maybe for solo combat so it doesn't get as stuck, as can happen with the stabbing rather than the cutting sometimes, which could be what the axe part in poleaxe is more about than cutting? Or especially with the long nodachi sometimes, rather than a double or triple kill with one swing, unless they're all lined up on the chinese three man tandem military land skis. Unless you can back up faster than they can impale themselves to the hilt of the blade, or aim higher. Unless you pivot or shoulder check through and unsheath into another swing, although the nodachi I saw had a pretty good curve on it as well. Would imagine you'd wonder about a ten foot field sword getting stuck on things alot though.

Claus, as soon as I arrived to Tokyo, I tried at shureido Tokyo (is in nakano very close to the station), but they didn’t have at that time, so I bought one at Isami, in shinjuku, later I bought one in shureido, as they brought a lot from okinawa, those are my 2 stores of reference here in Tokyo. I hope it helps !!

@@YourKarateNews I'm about 60km away from Tokyo. So the shipping costs will be the same for paying the parking at my station and the train ticket going to Shinyuku and return. I'm getting the size: 3cm x180cm, I'll go tomorrow to my nearest Super Viva Home and look for a similar pole. That might save a yen or 3000. I'll report on that. BTW: that home Center on my way to the dojo anyway and Saturday is Karate-day - 2 weeks to my 3rd Dan Test!

Ok, I get that you have a vested interest in promoting online learning. That being said, if you are truly serious about incorporating weapons into your overall martial arts study (I think a complete martial artist must be able to have solutions for unarmed striking, grappling, and clinch as well as armed fighting), I think you ought to get a live teacher and start advancing in whatever system they have. Fortunately, the way kobudo generally organizes itself allows one to practice whatever unarmed system they wish.

What you say is true, but it may be easier said than done given the current Covid situation in Japan. They are still in a very dire situation with cases ramping and vaccinations not nearly as prevalent. Makes it hard to maintain regular in-person classes.

Is your channel monetized? Did you compensate the Masters that shared their knowledge with you? I personally think it is not good to show the public any of this. We have seen what police and others have done in the states killing innocent black people with martial art technics. Everyone is making money or wants to be known or famous but violence has increased everywhere and now people of ill character worldwide know how to damage or even kill innocent and righteous people. You even complained publicly about someone laughing at you but you have a black belt. In my opinion this is not the way. The other European as with his karate channel I believe is very disrespectful because he was given the gift or karate and then tells the world it does not work be click bait his page for lives, subscriptions, and money. You are Japanese and to me if you just use the elders then basically you are just a Satsuma. This is my own personal opinion and it unfortunate that I have to even post this.
