Lesson 1:
I hope you enjoyed this video! Here’s all the points I made written out so you can keep track.
FAMILIARISATION (Favourite word of the day😍)
THE MIND - NO INSTRUMENT
Familiarise yourself with:
- Key signature
- Tempo
- Length of piece
- Structure
- Difficult parts
- Intention of sound
- Intention of expression
THE BODY - NO INSTRUMENT
Familiarise yourself with:
GENERAL
- Your breath (forgot to talk about this sorry! Breath deep and calmly, and don’t hold your breath)
- The floor
- Your shoulders
- Your arms
- Your hands
LEFT HAND/PICK UP INSTRUMENT
- Draw circles
- Scooping up and back down, being bold
- Wiggle fingers aaaaaand drop!
RIGHT HAND/PICK UP BOW
- Paint
- Flop
- Let go with left hand and balance
PICK UP BOTH INSTRUMENT AND BOW
- Now wait and bob and feel weight of both
SEPARATE OUT LEFT AND RIGHT HAND
- Create sound without worrying at ALL about the left hand
- Work out left hand without worrying about sound
IGNORE VIBRATO, RHYTHM, AND SOUND WHEN ONLY FOCUSED ON LEFT HAND
Only be concerned with
- intonation
- left hand relaxation and comfort
- left hand clarity
PATIENCE - THE ART OF SLOW PRACTICE
NOW LET’S GO SO SO SLOWLY
- Patience Is key
- Keep breathing as you’re doing stuff that’s really slow
- Keep shaking out your body
- Put down the instrument if you get impatient and angsty
GENERAL BITS OF ADVICE
- Anything that’s really difficult that takes a lot of concentration - DO NOT DO FOR LONG
- Don’t allow yourself to get disheartened or disappointed. This is NOT EASY!
- Keep focused on the bigger picture and do not get down about small problems
- Stay focused, and if you’re getting distracted - stop and start again
Remember to upload little videos of these exercises on Facebook or Instagram if you can 😍 and #salutnicky
YOUR TWO SET TASKS

Nicky

Nicky, What you have done here is just what I was looking for. I am 58 years old and not really played my violin since leaving college at 24. The fear of getting started was real ...... I needed a mentor yet didn't know where to find someone. Its like getting back into training after having lost my 'form'.... my left arm aches, my neck is tender and my fingers need to harden up too! This piece was one of my childhood favourites and is absolutely perfect for helping rekindle a lost part of me and to ease my instrument back into life and vitality again .... it needs to feel my love once again in order for us both to radiate and resonate. Thank you for providing the support to start me to find my way back. Claire Brooke

Mr./Ms. Brooke, I can relate! I'm 58 years old too and though my background is acoustic & nylon string guitar, I've just gotten hooked on a recent purchase of an NS Design WAV5 and I'm addicted to it especially during this shut-down time with hours/day to practice and never get bored! My point, your story motivates me so I say I wish for you - continued inspiration!! Take care and never stop! Pierre Lacazotte

I’m 58 too! Restarting classical violin after passing grade 6 several decades ago though I have played Irish fiddle for several years on and off and managed to get in some bad habits and never left first position. Really enjoying dusting off Vivaldi Am and the Bach Double but it’s very slow progress but slowly getting more assured. These videos are great.

Terimakasih bu Guru ,, telah memberikan sesuatu yang berguna. 👍 Mantab.
What an absolute treasure!!! I performed this piece over the weekend, and I'm absolutely using this video for myself and my students! Thank you for this!
Aeronwy says that she thinks that the most important thing in the first 4 bars is to focus on getting a really good sound. She absolutely loved the session, and can’t wait for the next one!
What a wonderful teacher you are! Thanks so much!
Thank you Nicky! Much love and support from Argentina!♥️♥️♥️🎵🎶🎶
I’m a double bassist but i’ve always been a huge fan of Nicky. Thank you for this video! This really gave me a lot of good focus points for my practice
I look forward to all your videos...there is so much you are putting into each one---so sensitively done.
Thank you for your generosity Nicky in sharing your knowledge widely; your teaching videos are invaluable and have been a great guide. My playing has considerably improved thanks to you. I'm looking forward to applying all you suggest here for the Salut d'Amour !! Stay well XX
LOVE YOU Nicola! My 11 years old violinist daughter adores your videos too. THANK YOU Hoping to listen to you in TSO in next season.
thank you!! always wanted to play this, maybe i’ll do it now with your guidance ❤️🥰
Wow!!! You're so inspiring!!! I discovered you and your channel by chance, as I am actually a rock guitarist and don't follow the classical scene (this will have to change!). I have just shared your channel with my sister, who played for over ten years from when she was a child, and unfortunately had to give it up in her late teens... Although she still has her violin, I'm sure she's always regretted not carrying on playing! I'm going to convince her to get back into playing!!!😃 Thank you for what you're doing❤️
Love this so much!!!! ❤️❤️
Wonderful teacher!
Nicky, I have just bought a violin and am enjoying following these videos so much.Thank you for this precious gift of personal tuition from you...its great!!!
Amazing! thank you very much for this masterclass! I think I am a little older than the target audience, but you patience and calming attitude made it so easy to follow along and be clam and foucused in practice. I think the biggest challenge in the first four bars is the first note. It is so important to set the tone, and i find myself getting mentally blocked and shying away on the entrance
**Thank you for your teaching. You're great!!**
I was just asked from a friend to play at her wedding, especially this piece. So I am absolutely grateful for this tutorial of yours, dear Nicola. Best regards from Bonn/Germany, where I enjoyed a performance of you several years ago 😁
Thanks for posting the videos ... Congratulations A hug from Brazil
What a great opportunity to learn from an accomplished violinist! Thank you Nicky for your gift and your heart (and for the chuckle when I heard that you mention with that awesome Scottish accent that your videographer's name just happened to be "Scott" 😁).
Very very Amazing work!!!! Congrats!
Brilliant ! Lots of love. ❤
Amazing.. Gymnastic first to a point of a sport training. just amazing
Great and clear explanation about time to study in high concentration. It's is the most and complex challenge for everyone students. It's a big advice for me. Tks a lot.
Awesome and thank you!
Hi Nicky......... since we last spoke a few years ago at Ravinia when I mentioned I was learning the cello, I gotta tell you I've set that aside for the moment to learn the banjo..... Yeah, it's been one of my passions for a few years , ever since I attended a jazz festival in Wisconsin and watched a brilliant banjoist play. I love the twang it makes and the fun it can create just strumming a few simple melodies we Americans have heard from the performers of Bluegrass. Well, so far, it's not been a smooth launch for me because banjo notes are not as easy to find as on a cello : they're sorta scattered here and there along the 5 strings, and so I'm gonna have to listen to your instructions of familiarization as my first lesson and then go from there. Anyhow, I'm delighted to see you again on You Tube, and might I ask, When are you returning to the Chicago area again? When you do, maybe we can duet a few melodies together on cello and banjo. HAH! By then I should have mastered a couple of Tennessee favorites......"Whiskey before Breakfast" , and "Cumberland Gap" .......
Many many Thanks for you my sweety Nicky, I admire so much your personality and videos that make all of us inspiriting to go through practising. You are so comfortable person to me and also so natural. Go on Nicky to reach the top violin mountain. and Happy EASTER to you. Jesus Christ save you
Amazing stuff can't wait to do those exercises (violinist point of view)
Thank you, Nicola.
15:08 Nicky phrase I will never forget and try to apply 😎. This will be a good companion of “ if you can play it slowly … 😂”
Beautiful individual all around, subscribed!
I am playing this on the recorder. This is very very helpful

Okay, but I love the artwork on your pegs!!

I love your video, this tutorial is amazing, please give me more fundamental to become more fluent in playing the violin. Thank you!
Thank You Madam. Very very Nice
Hello Nicky, these Elgar tutorials are wonderful and so helpful. Is it you who is playing the little bit behind the writing at 10-55 minutes in lesson 1? It is sublime.
ha, very lucky to got ya
Excellent! (from a saxophonist!)
Not a violinist (yet), but this is invaluable!
You are angel of all violin learners. So glad that we have you. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
When learning the notes, do you think it's OK to learn them as though playing a ukulele? I'm originally a guitarist and I find having no bow and just plucking the strings allows me to remember what the notes are and what fingerings I want to use. But if you think this doesn't help my playing, I'll attempt to stop!

Good morning NIKY
nicky! datang ke bali... ajarin aku 🌹☘️🎻🌹☘️🥺
When I play, ya really need to have a lot of patience, and a whole lot of imagination, so you can envision how it’s supposed to sound, so you can hear it like I hear it, in my head, where it sounds right, but what actually gets played, well,, um,, hmmm... 😉
What about a Viola?
🥰♥️
Where do I get the sheet music?

I think some of the links click through to the wrong music eg violin annotations takes your through to the viola part, but they all seem to be there if you keep clicking around. From The video before this one, it sends you to the foundation website itself which I couldn’t find the music at either. This link is great though and maybe could be put on the last video? Thanks, Nicky, really looking forward to diving into this.
the hard bit about the first four bars is the urge to do vibrato there XD
