You do an excellent job, my fiancé is Brazilian, and lives outside of são Paulo. I have traveled twice in the last eight months to visit the area - my first time to Brazil. I’ve been working hard with the language so we can better communicate. She knows very little English, however, she is very smart and is learning quickly. I stumbled upon your channel upon googling certain words I cannot tell you how much you’ve helped me in such a short period of time, especially with understanding all of the nuances with how different verbs can be used. This helped A LOT! It basically is the English equivalent to saying “I FIND it wonderful you’re playing soccer” or “I found the film to be boring”. Instead of always using “I think” or “I thought”. Também ajuda saber muito espanhol (1/2 da minha família é da América do Sul que fala espanhol), mas não sou 100% fluente). It’s the same Latin based, root word for the Spanish “hallar” which also translates to “to find”, but rarely used as “I think”. I’m so glad the algorithm brought me to your page! Esta aula é relativamente fácil para nós, falantes de espanhol. Em espanhol usamos "pensar" como você descreve, podemos usar "hallar" como você usa "achar", mas a palavra que comumente usamos dessa forma é "creer". Então entendemos essa separação.

Hi Bea, thanks for pointing out the need to add 'em' in between 'pensar' and the verb. I'm still learning the small words. And I realise I can't find anyone using the word 'it' as an object pronoun. For example. "I think it is good/hot/cold/etc" I even noticed this in your video: Vocé acha uma boa ideia? = 'You think a good idea?' Is this because 'it' as an object pronoun doesn't exist in portuguese?

Hi Peter! That's a good question. In Portuguese, if 'it' is a subject pronoun, it can be omitted. Ex. It is raining - Está chovendo. It is a good idea - É uma boa ideia. As an object pronoun, it will depend on which verb it is following. Some verbs will require its use (and the use of any other object pronouns) while others may not. 'Achar' can be followed either by a full sentence ('Você acha que é uma boa idea?' - 'Do you think that it is a good idea?') or a reduced one ('Você acha uma boa idea?' - 'Do you think it is a good idea?'), but in both examples 'it' (the subject pronoun of the sentence that follows 'acha') is omitted. Oi Bea! Gostei da aula! I just had a question: The first line of the song goes "Você pensa que cachaça é água...". In this case, wouldn't "achar" make more sense than "pensar" because it's talking about what someone believes to be true? I hope my question is clear! :)

Olá! I get your question 😊 I just hope my answer is just as clear. "Se você pensa que ...", in this case, it is somehow implied that after some thinking (some reasoning) the other person ('you') came to a conclusion that 'cachaça é água'. 'Pensar' refers more to the process of thinking. Let me try with another example. Ex. Às vezes eu penso em trocar de carro (my current car is a bit old, I have spent some money at the repair shop...I look at it and think it is high time I changed it) Now, when voicing my personal opinion (belief), it is much more common to use 'achar'. Ex. Acho que preciso trocar de carro (I think I need a new car, look at it. What do you think? - What's your opinion? - 'O que você acha?') Think about it (my answer), then tell me what you think. Pense sobre isso, e depois me diga o que você acha. (process of thinking x voicing your conclusion, opinion...)

@@PlainPortuguese If I understand correctly, the implication here is that the person is saying that you did the process of thinking and arrived at the conclusion. I still think that acha would make more sense or sound more natural based on my understanding :) The problem now is that I have the song in my head and I'm going to walk around all day humming :(

@@shadow9449 In fact, both verbs work here. My guess is that the writer decided for 'pensa' because the combination of 'acha' and 'cachaça' could be a tongue twister - 'Se você acha que cachaça..." :)

Quanto mais você adquire fluidez num idioma, mais falará e pensará da maneira como você acha ser o correto, e não de forma inflexível gramaticalmente. Nesse exemplo da música: "se você pensa que cachaça é água" ... é perfeitamente aceitável o verbo pensar, representando exatamente o mesmo sentido de achar. E em alguns exemplos da professora, caberia os dois verbos na situação. Por exemplo: "estou pensando em visitar Curitiba no próximo ano". > "Acho que vou visitar Curitiba no próximo ano".

Do you use the subjunctive or indicative mood for a sentence like você acha que eu sou/seja? Obrigado!

Olá! Sua pergunta é muito interessante. I would need to research more on the matter to give you an accurate answer. The one I will provide, though, is based on my perception as a native speaker. 'Achar', when used to express one's opinion, is often followed by a clause starting with 'que'. Ex. Eu acho que ela está em casa. Ele acha que todos os brasileiros gostam de futebol. But, for some reason, if 'achar' is followed by 'que...é...+adjective', it is possible to omit both 'que' and 'é'. Ex. Eu acho que ela é inteligente .= Eu acho ela inteligente. Ela acha que português é uma língua bonita. = Ela acha português uma língua bonita. Ele acha que esta loja é muito cara. = Ele acha esta loja muito cara. Eu acho que sua pergunta é muito interessante. = Eu acho sua pergunta interessante. Maybe we could draw a parallel between the following structures in English. Ex. I think that she is intelligent. = I find her intelligent. I think that your question is very interesting. = I find your question interesting.
