Learn to wheelie/get your wheelies higher

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video is centered a bit more towards the progression of wheelies, but includes the basics for people who also want to get started with their first wheelie. I have never made a tutorial so sorry if it sucked, I'm not a teacher, I'm just trying to share the steps I took that have lead me to where I'm at today with wheelies

    This is my 15th video in the variety of “How to Wheelie” and you actually had better instructions than a good bit of them. Such as the slow motion during the “clutch-up” to show exactly what to do and to keep the throttle in the same position instead of just revving it. Good job. This video honestly deserves at least a 6 digit view count.

    Honestly the way I learned how to wheelie better is when I was told if I can see in front of me wheeling a sport bike I’m not going high enough. I got wheelies down pretty fast over time after that😂

    I rode several times a week for about 3 months after changing my gearing and saw the fastest progression I’ve ever had in my 2 years of riding. Getting better can be easy or hard depending on the bike and gearing but seat time is the biggest factor. I would say if you practice at least like an hour maybe 4 days a week you could go from no wheelies to balance point in like 6 months or less if your willing to push yourself. If you have an easy bike like a dirtbike, fz07, or a stunt geared bike maybe 3-4 months

    If you just tell someone to try to wheelie most people won’t even have a clue how to clutch up. Most people power wheelie until they’ve watched a clutch up tutorial. Also most people know nothing about using the foot brake to control a wheelie till they see that in a video too unless someone has told them to use the footbrake. It’s not like they can just watch a video and immediately do it, but it gives them the information they need to be able to practice the right things for themselves instead of figuring it out entirely on their own. It’s like being taught math and then given a test once you’ve been taught and had time to practice, instead of just giving someone the test and making them figure it out

    1 down 2 up is very nice. I wheelied on a long time ago with that gearing and it felt good. Might just need to learn in 1st gear. 1st on stock gearing is like 3rd gear on my 52 tooth sprocket. I’ve also had a 47 tooth rear with stock front and liked that a lot too. I would actually prefer that over my 52 or 55 and it kept a good top speed

    Best way to practice is to go somewhere that you don’t have to look around. Just an empty space so you can stay perfectly centered while learning instead of having to look for what’s infront of you. If that’s not an option you basically just have to get it high enough to manipulate where the bike goes. The higher it is the more you can direct it

It seems pretty straight forward and I have tried it out a couple times just to see if I could do it with my 200 and it popped, but now it makes some weird noises when I go from 2nd to 3rd so I won't be attempting it on my work bike again. I need to buy a little beater that I can mess around on amd not carw if it gets messed up.

    ik im late but figured id still ask. im getting pretty solid at just holding a steady slow wheelie but im having alot of trouble finding my sweet spot. anytime i think i need the rear brake the bike just stabs back to the ground. im running the stock pads and caliber on my fz07 but it just feels like im either about to loop and the moment the brake gets touched it comes way too far down, or its too low and i slowly chase it out. on my grom i can sit down all day and my footbrake is perfect but on the fz its like slamming the footbrake no matter how little i touch it

  • @jar7d

    @jar7d

    Жыл бұрын

    Part of that is probably the fz07s bouncy suspension. That will partially be fixed with a saggy ass fix from ss moto for like $110. The suspension compresses a lot when you foot brake and it makes it feel like it’s grabbing drastically even if it’s not. The other part could be your foot brake adjustment. Most likely though, it’s just the bouncy suspension combined with stronger engine brake, and a stronger foot brake in general. You can dip pretty far on the fz before you actually even need to foot brake because the engine brake is so strong, so you probably just need to work on being very light with it

  • @jar7d

    @jar7d

    10 ай бұрын

    The clutch up can do all the work for you but I started giving it a little yank just to try to put less tension on the chain. You can kind of compress the forks a little then yank on the rebound and it makes it smoother than just straight dumping the clutch. I wouldn’t worry about that kind of stuff in the beginning though. I’d limit the variables as little as possible while learning so you know exactly what you need to work on. If you try to many things at once and it’s not working out you won’t know what you need to change to improve. Once you’ve mastered the clutch up then you could try giving it the yank and see if it is less snappy on your chain

    Do you stay on the throttle before you pull the clutch in, as the clutch is in still stay on the throttle, when the clutch is dumped fine tune your throttle? Or do you give it throttle, let go of the throttle, pull the clutch in, give it throttle, and then dump the clutch and fine tune your throttle? Im a little confused but I think you explained the general concept pretty well from what I see. I have a new drz400 and want to start with small wheelies. Any suggestion what speed I should be going in 2nd gear on a smaller bike?

  • @jar7d

    @jar7d

    Жыл бұрын

    Give steady throttle to maintain speed, pull the clutch in, then give it MORE throttle, then after releasing the clutch maintain the amount of throttle you added while the clutch was in and as it starts to rise fine tune the throttle. If it comes up fast you may have to let off the throttle quickly, if it comes up slow you may need to give more throttle either after the clutch dump or while it’s still pulled. And for 2nd gear my best advice is not to base on speed but feel the bike and gear how it sounds. If you can pull the throttle hard and the bike barely moves, you may need to go faster. If you pull hard and it’s jumpy/touchy like you’re in the power band, that’s a good place to be for the clutch up. You want your bike to be very responsive to throttle input once the clutch is dumped. But to just name a speed 15-20 mph in 2nd gear is probably fine

  • @JeremyDovin

    @JeremyDovin

    I currently own a drz400 and I find it fairly hard to wheelie. Everybody says its a “wheelie machine” and from my experience it’s nothing like that. A husqvarna 701 enduro for a dirtbike would be more like a “wheelie machine” than a drz400 because it has double the power for about the same weight. I am surprised how underpowered the drz is for my first bike. Im definitely planning on getting a sportbike like a cbr600rr, R6, or zx6r in the near future. For the time being I can do half ass power wheelies in 1st gear on my drz400. Once its almost at balance point I cant maintain that height and the bike just goes right down. I get the general concept of clutch ups but you really have to give it a lot of throttle (at least for a drz) to get the front tire off the ground in 1st gear. It also scares the absolute crap out of me how fast it comes up…

    Do you hold the throttle when you foot break to keep the bike up?..., because mine have engine break as well. Whenever I turn the throttle forward the front comes down. I dnt understand what "come off the throttle" means if the bike comes down when you turn the throttle forward.

  • @jar7d

    @jar7d

    Жыл бұрын

    If you let off the throttle and the bike comes down you’re not high enough. I don’t stay on the throttle when I foot brake. The point of foot brake is that you use it when the bike is so high that letting off the gas/rolling the throttle forward doesn’t bring the bike back down and the only way to keep it from continuing to fall back is the foot brake

    Hey i did a wheelie today and slammed the front pretty hard, thought I heard something and now it feels a bit more vibraty, also when I when I'm on my bike I would have to tip toe to back it up since I'm short but now I feel like more of my feet can touch the ground like my bike is lower?? Any thoughts??😅😐😔 got a zx6r

    Check if the top of your forks are flush with your top triple tree or if they are sticking out above the triple tree. You might have pushed them up a little if one or both of your triple trees were loose. I would also check your lower triple tree to make sure it’s not cracked if you heard someone loud. Mostly likely though I would think it’s just the forks sliding up from the hard slam

  • @jar7d

    @jar7d

    2 ай бұрын

    Harley’s are easy if you already know how to wheelie but they need a lot more mods to wheelie and you have to know how to pop straight to balance point or else you only have like 2 seconds to chase it before you redline. I would say they’d be much harder for someone trying to learn

  • @jar7d

    Levers like the clutch lever? Or you mean the clip ons/bars? Either way, you can do it totally stock, you just have to find out the right mix of speed, gear, and rev amount. On a stock 750 I would do 1st gear, slow like 30 mph, and try the clutch up. Of it doesn’t come up you either need to work on the technique of your clutch up or just rev higher. Assuming the bike doesn’t have mechanical issues causing loss of power. Also if you have traction control it has to be turned off for wheelies

    That’s not normal lol get that checked out. Bike shouldn’t pass 220 and if it does fans should kick on and cool it back down. If it’s getting too hot could need a coolant flush or maybe your fans aren’t working
