A review of the Carv digital ski coch.

Carv is a device that combines pressure sensors, rotary and position transmitters, with an App equipped with AI to make you a better skier. The concept is brilliant, allowing any skier to get a true sense of areas they can improve. Carv collects real time data and transmits feedback to you in real time. It also gathers a ton of metrics related to your position, speed, edge, angle, etc. to help you improve with drills, challenges, or just passive tips while you ski. In this video I review my experience with Carv and share what you might want to know before purchasing it.

    so thanks for the good review. I also use it myself. But definitely should still get a private ski coach. carv doesn't look out for your upper body. which is as important as the lower body.

    Hey, I like them! I would consider myself a pretty average skiier so take my advice with a grain of salt. I'm pretty happy with their performance. Seem to carve well and they handle pretty well when it's a bit choppy. Nothing bad to say other then I need some lighter bindings.

    I think a lot of the great things carve does are missed in this review. Carve actually has 36 pressure sensors per foot and accelerometers and gyroscopes. Yes, the free ski mode is fun for tracking your improvement over time. However, the monitor mode is fantastic while working on a particular skill. If you are serious about trying to improve, the app gives you a score on the particular skill area you are working on for every turn. This is immediate and accurate feed back on every turn as it happens. Most people struggle with the awareness as to how well they are carrying out an exercise. The monitor measures it and tells you. If you don’t understand what you are trying to achieve, it is best to take a lesson with an instructor who can explain what you need to do and translate that into the monitor data. This is really cool kit but is still relatively new, I love it!

    Nice review, I have a question, will it work with custom insole for different shoes?

  • @Movesmedia

    @Movesmedia

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey thanks! It should but it's pressure activated so by dampening the pressure by putting an insole on top might impact the sensitivity. It goes under your ski linnig so if you're adding your insole on top of that it's hard to know how accurate the pressure from different places in your feet will be. This is just my guess, and I don't think you would know until you tried it. Hope that helps...

    I have light insole, not a custom and a wire for my hot tronics which runs under the insert and comes through a hole above my heel at the back. Easy enough to remove the batteries for my hot tronics, but not easy to go back and forth with the hot tronics. Do you think the Carv system would work with the other pieces in place?

  • @Movesmedia

    You can simply leave your phone locked and the app runs with pretty minimal battery usage. I didn't notice a huge drain of the battery. You just need to make sure to keep your phone warm because the cold can have a bigger impact than the app running!

  • @Movesmedia

    @Movesmedia

    2 жыл бұрын

    It will definitely track how you ski. It should also track how well you do each turn. It's more of a pass fail system so it won't necessarily tell you how hard you turn. It will tell you if you did any bad turns on your run. Let me know if that helps!

    I personally do not see the value unless you are a very high level skier, looking to fine tune ski loading, edging technique, etc. For a racer/expert (as I was as a kid) I think it could be useful. Up till you are that level, I do not see much value, and here is why. Improving your skiing is actually simple. CARV can tell you what you need to improve. OK... Sorry but that is about 2% of the battle. The meaningful part of improving your skiing TAKES WORK. Simple boring work. That means DRILLS. Most people are looking for magic bullets. They don't exist. I have tired to teach a lot of people how to improve their skiing. One in about 5 are willing to do drills...and they improve FAST. The others...wont do drills because they want magic bullets. CARV to me seems like a product that will appeal to people who want those magic bullets.

  • @Movesmedia

    @Movesmedia

    But Carv tries to make what you call "Boring work" more fun... That is the exact reason why it's great. It makes drills and boring work feel like a game... At least it did for me. It's kind of like why Strava is so popular.

  • @shooter7a

    @shooter7a

    @@Movesmedia Strava is not a tool to teach fine motor control of very complex body movements. The whole "aware skier" approach of Carv is not one that works in my experience. In most of my Jr. racing career, I had coaches that relied on "aware skiing" (put more weight on your DH ski...transfer weight here), and none of us did very well. My last two years, we got a new coach who was big on targeted drills. The first day we ran gates for him...he said "STOP". "We have things to work on. You are wasting your time running gates.... " He had us doing drills for weeks. We hated it...but we did them. And different skiers were focusing on different drills. We ALL improved in two weeks more than we had in the prior years. And most of the time we were not even AWARE of what we were learning. This is how drills work...they teach you body motions that you do not even know you are doing. It is literally the opposite of the aware skier approach of Carv. Sorry...but in my experience "keep more pressure on your DH ski boot tongue in transition as it becomes your new inside ski so as to keep load on the shovel of your new inside ski and get a better turn initiation" simply DOES NOT WORK. Thee is too much going on to "be aware" and re learn new ways of moving and feeling. Swiss Drill for instance...DOES ALL THAT...and you do not even need to think. Just go do it 250 times and your skiing is transformed. It is a fundamentally different approach. As I said, I think Carv could be useful to measuring ski loadings, etc, that are too subtle for a coach to see, for very high level skiers. But for 99% of skiers, it will detract from the work they need to put in. Just my opinion, which is of course influenced by my extensive skiing background as a kid.

    A scam. Be aware. You have to pay a year subscription, if you don’t, the device is useless. The company can change the subscription price from one year to the next without limitation. Once you invest in the equipment, you are hooked. 200 $ / y now, who knows next year.

    it’s not a scam if they fully disclose that it is a subscription service. They say your subscription is valid for 365 days and then it will renew. So I’m not sure what the confusion is. I agree that we never know what the renewal fees will be, but even if I spend $250 for a device and seven ski days on curve, it’s better than paying for private ski lessons for seven hours. So even if I never get to use the device again by renewing, I think I still save the bunch of money.

    Regarding the software licence, there are extras like webinars that you can attend. Last week I attended a balance webinar which explained how the balance metric in the software and how to get the most out of it. Looking forward to the webinar this week. Carv ambassador Ted Ligety, yes, THE Ted Ligety is giving a webinar on the ‘the art and science of his turns’. Apparently, if you do not continue with the software license, there is limited functionality still available in the app. I don’t know which features are still available, but you can continue using the carvs.
