I had the same problem, but I got myself some new skates that I really like. They have figure skate blades (so, more stability forwards and backwards, and toe picks to push off of), but they're branded as "recreational" skates, so they're more padded, and they have better ankle support. Look up "VIC Women's Recreational Skate" at Canadian Tire, and you'll find them. I also have really high-arched feet that used to hurt in skates, but I solved that problem with yellow Superfeet insoles. Since we're under lockdown here in Ontario, and just about everything is closed except for our local outdoor rinks, I figured that it was worth it to get myself some better skates so I could enjoy something about winter this year.

Lol, I've been roller skating since age two, roller blading since ten, and ice skating (competently) since 16. I'm 36 now. Falling is *never* a what if. Based on my experience running two youth programs and 10 years of coaching this pretty much sums up the first two weeks of any learn to skate program (assuming you're skating once a week). This is a great video for youngsters to learn the absolute basics. Some folks gave her a hard time about wearing a hockey helmet, but wearing a helmet is a requirement -- or strongly suggested -- for most programs. We also want the kids to wear a cage ... but I'm glad the skater in the video decided not to wear the bird cage.

As a skater myself, I can’t even begin to emphasise how important it is to protect your head. Using a helmet helped me become confident to try new things as a skater until the point where it became a problem with speed etc. I now wear a lighter head protection at practice and none at competitions. I made that choice myself though, knowing how a hit against your head could affect you in a worst case scenario. Small children do not. They should wear a helmet.

2 sizes smaller if you play Ice hockey..Go to a hockey rink let them fit you. The smaller you can fit the better. Bend your knees not out spread try to keep them close together. Orient on your chest going forward and look left and right and feel a balance in the middle of your chest.EX. Adjust your weight ..point the left skate to the left if you want to turn left once you start adjust the right leg to it keep your leg close Adjust the stride small at first once you become comfortable spread out your legs. Your riding a bike.. You have to adjust your weight turn the skate..adjust the wheel on turning leg. Apply the other leg for stability. It's an art you got to feel it.

Don't tie them up too tight! Far too many people are put off from skating because they, or some well-meaning helper, has over-tightened their skates to the point of cutting off the circulation. Howie Meeker used to say that if you can't skate properly with only the top three holes laced and tied, then you don't have proper fitting skates.

Lol, I've been roller skating since age two, roller blading since ten, and ice skating (competently) since 16. I'm 36 now. Falling is *never* a what if. I'm a good skater, and I can't even tell you how many times I've scraped my knees, elbows, shins, hands, and even shoulder once because of falls. Nothing deters me, though. I love skating, and I never wanna stop.
I tried this and after 5 times of falling down like you did I manage to glide without struggling. now I can do ice skate and I even bought my own ice skate shoes. thank you so much

Rita Viana try to get better at stopping. Once you get momentum while skating I think it’s easier to balance and not fall. So if you’re good at stopping, you won’t have to worry about how fast you go

I’m jumping in here late but… I second the helmet advice. I’m a pretty good skater but I still like to push the limits and work on new skills. On occasion I will catch an edge and take a spill. I have hit my head on the ice before. No fun. Wear a helmet!

Lol. I went to the skating rink for the first time in my adult life (I’m 28) and no one on the rink was wearing a helmet. I was like, “Cool kids put safety first.” And grabbed immediately grabbed a helmet. 😂
I tried all the steps in this video. Then I fell and died. :(

Thanks so much, I didn’t know how to ice skate and we were going to celebrate my 15 year old cousins birthday ice skating and I didn’t want to fall, this helped a lot.
You are awesome Rebecca, gonna follow your tips this winter.
Quick and to the point. Love it!
I dont remember learning how to skate but playing hockey as a kid had something to do with it. I recently got back on a pair of skates after 10 years and it's like riding a bike, you just dont forget.

Go to public skating sessions as much as possible and practice. If you get one or two private sessions, that will be much more useful than group lessons at your age. Just keep skating and remember if you don't fall, you're not challenging yourself enough. Wear a helmet. Get butt pads or wear roller blading knee pads under your pants so you relax and go for it!

I am thinking about starting figure skating. I am an adult male. since you are an advanced figure Skater and have been through this would you have any tips Suggestions of brands to get or what to or not to get or anyone else here that reads this or may know. I have read it is a good idea to wear a helmet and read about wearing some kind of padded shorts or padded long pants and something about padded hand braces of some sorts and knee and elbow pads. Should I buy all that for beginning skating. If so what brand or helmet would you recommend to buy as well as knee Elbow and hand pads or braces. Any specific type or brand and should I buy padded shorts or padded long pants and any recommendation beings you went through this as a kid and you know what’s good or not in figure Skating. Your video was great!! Excited to try it!! Figure Skating looks like Tons of fun!! Any help is appreciated!!
I think I actually might be able to do this next week.

Ya i was fitted for a size 10 wide skate, but i wear a size 11 normal skate. It works well for me. The pain goes away after the first few sessions. Though 4 hours would probably do your feet in no matter how broken in the skates are
This was helpful but I am scared to fall and my muscle get so tight If I fall it really hurts
Thank u so much I’m gonna yo Ice skating tomorrow I’m SO exited we hoooooo
I was beginning to worry that my skates were too big because, I have wide feet and I had to get a size up. I didn't know until now that, your toes doesn't necessarily need to touch the front of the boot.
She's sooooo cute. My heart.
Great video. Golden Bears represent. Love that Bauer helmet haha
Wowww amazing thx
Thanx. That was fun.
super explanation!
after playing hockey for 20 years its weird how analytical this is for something that i think is so natural.
Thanks for helping me because I have never been and I am going
My skates are a little too long is that okay? They fit tight and snug but my toes dont touch the end. Its more comfortable that way because then my toes aren't aching. I also found these skates in good condition at goodwill for 12 dollars so I dont really have a lot of options xD do you think the fit of my skates will be safe?

Don't tie them up too tight! Far too many people are put off from skating because they, or some well-meaning helper, has over-tightened their skates to the point of cutting off the circulation. Howie Meeker used to say that if you can't skate properly with only the top three holes laced and tied, then you don't have proper fitting skates.
Finally!!! I can learn to ice skate
