    Love the Ox Drove, I wonder how long before it’s ruined with Road planings just like Shaftesbury drove 😢 best advice I was given for ruts was steer with your feet and grip the bike with your legs and then loosen your grip on the bars. I’m actually enjoying ruts now I’m on a light bike. Great content as always 👏🏼👏🏼

    With ruts you are either in it, crossed or off 😁 You need to get comfortable with the bike moving a lot below you. It’s also no different to all riding…pick a line miles in front. You can’t adequately plan or react looking just in front of you.

    Clay muds are my biggest problem right now. I would like a video that discusses traveling down a wet clay road. I ride everyday regardless of weather conditions including snow. Snow and clay are my biggest challenges and I find myself using my feet like out riggers when its really really slick. My commute to work is 26 miles per day and a little less than half is dirt roads and gravel roads. This is part of why I bought my G310GS and leave my flying brick at home. I've done snow covered hill climbs with that rear tire out to one side and otherwise riddin that '86 flying brick all over the rockies. But my commute to work is seemingly tougher and the pucker factor is through the roof. I just put on better tires and road in the snot like clay in today's gentle rains (had to just to test the tires - I can actually avoid the slickest of the clay roads). Traffic was light so I didn't mind going 10mph but when the wind or my focus was pushing me towards the drainage ditch and my front end wandered, my outriggers came out to keep me on the road. I don't like me doing that but its seemingly impossible to stand up. I just want to get better and reduce my pucker factor. The tires helped but the rest is on me. BTW I'm thinking the obstacle clearing methodology in the video seems to be extendable towards an entire road or day of riding but, is it? "Relaxing the shatty" LOL I think I've been relaxed when I've shat but I have no idea what the hell that means. I think about it almost daily on 'dead man's curve' by my lab but I'm still not taking that turn over 40mph's, yet, I'm still working on that too.

    Here's a dct plug from my experience riding ruts and mud this spring on my Africa Twin - not having to deal with the clutch makes it a lot easier to concentrate on footpegs and balance. I got stuck in about 8" of mud and was loaded up. I poked around and saw that the mud was worse on the left side and that my rear wheel would naturally slip in that direction and likely make recovery a hour long mucky affair. Then the moment of insight occurred - what if I jump off the bike to the right and just lightly drive it forward with as little torque as necessary. It was just spinning with me on it but without me on, it came out of the mud very easily. DCT for the win on that day.

    @@BrakeMagazine Hey Llewellyn, There were some minor issues and some major deal-breakers (for me). On the minor, but irritating issues. 1 - The nearly 1/5th turn of free-play in the throttle, which is reminiscent of a poorly adjusted throttle cable. Unfortunately, as far as I know, this can't be adjusted. This is either a design floor, or poor quality control - neither fills me with confidence. - So a less than good sportsbike. 2- Very poor weather protection and major buffeting from the poorly designed screen. - So not a good Touring bike. 3 - A terrible menu system. It is overly complicated. It is old-fashioned (compared to other RBW bikes). Compared to the Tuareg menu system AND the V85TT system (both of which let you easily flick through modes on the fly), it is a 'dog's breakfast'. Here is the process - Stop on the side of the road. Take your helmet and gloves off. Get out the manual. Put on your reading glasses (The screen is tiny - how much is this bike - $30Knz - bit stingy Ducati). Spend ages messing around to switch to another mode. God knows how long it would take to deep dive to really set it up... Months probably. Obviously, more familiarity would improve things, but why would I bother. - So backward, user-unfriendly design. 4 - AND like almost every modern motorcycle I've ridden, unreliable fuelling. This one chopped the throttle 'on its own' mid-corner. By this stage, I was taking it carefully, so the incident was disconcerting and irritating. If I'd been riding closer to the limit, it could have been out-right dangerous. 5- Unimpressive specs - It does make more power than my Africa Twin (2016), but the bike weighs about the same. - so not ground breaking. Ok, those are my minor gripes. 1- The Dealbreaker is the shockingly bad suspension and dangerous front end. It is vague at the front - I'm not the only one who has noted this. - So no better than an old KTM950ADV as far as fast road riding goes. 2- The light, twitchy front end skips over bumps, bars flapping, with the front wheel not tracking. It is super unstable on anything but billiard smooth tarseal. The forks are so badly tuned (lack of damping I think) that under hard braking the front pogos up and down as the ABS pulses. - So useless as a track bike. And not ideal as a back-road scratcher. 3 - Because the front end is a liability, it isn't a relaxing ride. Usually a 21" front wheel allows you to steam-roll road imperfections. - So not a good option as an Adventure bike. Sorry, that turned into a bit of a rant. Suffice to say, I was highly unimpressed with the Desert X. Ultimately, the Ducati Desert X is a confused bike that doesn't seem to know what it is, or fit into a useful category. The Desert X (a dealer demonstrator) I road was so dangerous, I took it back to the shop after 40 minutes of moderately hard riding. I never took it off-road, or on gravel because I wasn't confident I wouldn't crash it and couldn't afford the insurance excess. I've never ridden another bike that eroded my confidence like this one did... Maybe there was something wrong with this one. VERY BEST REGARDS CAMPBELL ROUSSELLE

    @@actstuntcam Hey, it kinda sounds like we were riding different bikes. I did notice that the shock was soft when I added luggage. On my own weight you can get the Sag on the rear shock right but only just. Being soft made the front floaty and handle poorly but rectifying it solved the problem and left me with front end that had tones of grip and good feel. I ghetto solved it by pushing the forks through the clamps. Sounds like a really shitty set up from the dealer man. 😕

  • @actstuntcam

    @actstuntcam

    Жыл бұрын

    @@BrakeMagazine I doubt it was a poor 'set-up' by the dealer. I assume (possibly wrongly) that it would simply be on its factory settings. Interestingly, your fix is identical to the fix I considered, whilst riding. - Slightly more preload in the rear (although I never noticed a deficiency in the rear shock), lift the forks through the clamps to weight the front, and add some rebound to help control its tendency to skip off every imperfection on the road. My understanding is Ducati went to great lengths to lighten the front (a terrible idea... well certainly a terrible outcome). I also considered you might have to replace the front wheel... although you sound happy with yours. How did you solve the throttle issue?

    Good lesson but...if you are riding off road on a bike like this you should already have experience. I grew up on dirt bikes so riding in ruts and stuff is second nature to me. Im a believer in starting on small mx and dualsports and learn the skills like I did at a young age. Its like when people buy 600cc crotch rockets to learn to ride on. Its not going to go well. Learn to ride then progress up. Micheal Jackson didn't start at the top, no ones does. My point is, this is not a good bike to learn on. Show this exact same lesson only using a trail bike so people dont get the wrong idea. Just my opinion.

Edit to add: thanks for offering to assist, but if they don’t respond to an “unknown” average customer’s repeated concerns but only to a kind but well know brand representative, I really don’t think they are a good match for me.
