Learn to Paint like the Old Masters from Odd Nerdrum's Prominent Pupil Sebastian Salvo | Part I

In these times of isolation and quarantine, what makes more sense than starting a new life-size self-portrait? Watch the Chilean painter Sebastian Salvo work his way through the different stages - from stretching the canvas, and preparation, to applying the first layers of paint.
Do you want to watch the continuation of Sebastian Salvo's self-portrait painting?

Although the many breaks: Loved to watch and hear this process, there is enough space for the student to fill in his or her own idea of set up; in my case I should immediately involve the background in tones in order to get grip on the whole: on the tones in the portrait/figure specially. Within this context it is natural to mention the meaning of 'seeing' Christ: Thank you very much!

Even when considering Odd’s philosophy regarding the painted figure being elongated, this head is too small with arms too long, etc. Its easy to get sucked into a rut & lose track of painting throughout the entire composition. In this case, the face & hair, the details being addressed too soon……. Not doing this is easier said than done. Its fun & attractive to add details, to turn form, to add highlights. But we must avoid such temptation & continue the flow through the whole piece. Theres a current, a river flowing through every piece. Finding that early & then protecting it through the process, through the push & pull of light/dark cool/warm, thats the ‘energy’ directing the eye. Representing each change in space with large shapes, then coming back & sculpting down from there. Reducing those large shapes to the degree u choose, how loose or tight u prefer. The same choices to b made with color & value. How many mid-tones determined by a painters preference.
