You are so kind to take all this time to teach us. I am very impressed and full of gratitude ☺️🥰. I haven't seen any artist on You Tube to do such favor in teaching, and taking so much time. You are a rare treasure of a teacher. Also a Master. May the ALMIGHTY, give you fortune and good health in your life. I simply love your work 💘!!!!
This guy is really good and he conveys the critical part of what he is doing beautifully.
You had a compelling character from your very first strokes. The eye was already alive. Very wonderful to watch you work.
Is like to fast forward but every couple of minutes he says something really worth hearing , he drops some pearls
The way he uses English is very cool, limited knowledge but big mind, Like with the brilliance he puts forth with his art.
Although the many breaks: Loved to watch and hear this process, there is enough space for the student to fill in his or her own idea of set up; in my case I should immediately involve the background in tones in order to get grip on the whole: on the tones in the portrait/figure specially. Within this context it is natural to mention the meaning of 'seeing' Christ: Thank you very much!
incredible painter he gives me the urge to do my self-portrait too
it is so beautiful to find artists all over the world sharing on you tube it is a dream come true for this 62 year old woman ,ive been painting 27 years almost every day im doing watercolors now but want to paint in oils, thank you very much i love your accent im in washington state
Good job doing a self painting well done.
Beautiful work. Initially I expected you were going to demonstrate a classical style reminiscent of the Renaissance masters. However, this piece has more in common with Cezanne! Well done.

Good stuff 👍
Thank you for this great opportunity to see these videos. They are wonderful! You are a great artist. Two terms I didn't understand for the priming of the canvas collar and fishbone material. It could be the subtitles, and where I can by alkyd resin. Thanks
wow great.
Is the canvas pre-sized with a glue before the ground is applied?
Thanks for shearing your process, i'm impressed.
your commentary is very good
What color paints are being used to tone the canvas during the initial prep ?
I lovethis video so much, i might trya self-portrait myself. I did a painting of Jesus 'In the Garden' ...like the old hymn says. I took it to an art show at a bank n it sold befor the show started. Some ppl just love Jesus! I priced it high so it wouldn't sell n I could take it home but it sold anyway.❤
When will we be able to see the finished work? I would be looking forward to the next 📸. You're a treasure not to be lost. Thank you for your kindness ☺️☺️

trust me, you can get the exact same look by using a wal-mart canvas drop cloth and the cheapest house paint - wasting studio time to make some kind of perfect canvas suggests a lack of confidence in the finished work - the best way to learn how to paint like an old master is to practice it without feeling the need to rush to sell or show anything

canvas can actually do more than be perfectly flat btw! you can even paint it, cut it up and collage it into a mural!! I've experimented with the various states of canvas and find that not priming the whole canvas allows for much more interesting things to happen!

Very educational well done. A message to all those who criticise him for the “Christ complex”, as an atheist I would ask how does person who looks like the perceived Jesus character paint a self portrait without it looking like the perceived Jesus. As a matter of real interest who decided what Jesus looked like as I understand there are no contemporary pictures of the man.

Bitter, shallow ppl never have anything good to say. "Consider the source" my mother always said! Evil condems n goodness lifts up!
The canvas isn't primed though, is it? Won't using a linseed oil-based ground make the canvas decay??

does it have to be archival quality to matter? Isn't it exciting to know that there may be entropy in the canvas as the body will decay some day too? Oh wait, some collectors expect the work to survive for centuries so their investment will immortalize them, got it.

Why not paint like Franz Hals or Carel Fabritis?
I'm not an artist but that was amazing. How do you get green if you only use those four colors and is using your fingers potentially dangerous?
@kevinrice6245

The black pigment pulls more to the blue spectrum so it behaves like a dark low chroma blue in color mixtures. Mixed with a yellow it can create some pretty nice low chroma greens.

@@kidthump I know. I was surprised myself when I first discovered that. I think he said he’s using Mars black which I believe leans even more to the blue side than ivory black which most people use. So yeah blue + yellow will get you some sort of green.

Oh goodness Just what the doctor ordered
Porque no hacen algo hablado en español !!!
Even when considering Odd’s philosophy regarding the painted figure being elongated, this head is too small with arms too long, etc. Its easy to get sucked into a rut & lose track of painting throughout the entire composition. In this case, the face & hair, the details being addressed too soon……. Not doing this is easier said than done. Its fun & attractive to add details, to turn form, to add highlights. But we must avoid such temptation & continue the flow through the whole piece. Theres a current, a river flowing through every piece. Finding that early & then protecting it through the process, through the push & pull of light/dark cool/warm, thats the ‘energy’ directing the eye. Representing each change in space with large shapes, then coming back & sculpting down from there. Reducing those large shapes to the degree u choose, how loose or tight u prefer. The same choices to b made with color & value. How many mid-tones determined by a painters preference.
Congratulations on uploading a proper exhibition of the topic. SO fed up with 'How to paint like Rembrandt' videos that are 8 minutes long. Subscribed with thanks. I may have missed it, but did you not size the canvas with RSG before priming? I guess the other obvious question is why you did not go right up to the edges, but left that gap.
