Learn to carve Santa's Face

Here's an early Christmas gift to all my subscribers! I designed this Santa piece to give beginner wood carvers the confidence to carve faces. I hope you enjoy this tutorial and learn a thing or two. Wishing everyone a happy healthy holiday season and a better 2021 ! Mister Splinters

PLEASE NOTE:
It is not necessary to use the exact size tools and/or materials that I used in this video.
MATERIALS
1" (25mm) x 1" (25mm) x 2.5" (63mm) block of basswood (also known as Linden wood)
TOOLS
Pencil
Soft artist type eraser
Combination square
Dial Calipers or dividers
Carving safety glove
Carving knife with a 1.5" (38mm) blade or longer
Strop and compound
X-Acto Hobby knife with #11 Blades
#3 - 8mm (5/16") gouge
#3 - 9mm gouge
#5 - 6mm (1/4") gouge
#7 - 3mm (1/8") gouge
#7 - 4mm (5/32") gouge
#7 - 6mm (1/4") gouge
#8 - 5mm (3/16") gouge
#11 - 2mm (3/32") gouge
#11 - 3mm (1/8") gouge
Micro Skew chisel 3mm (1/8")
Skew chisel 6mm (1/4")
Wood-burning unit with a writing tip
PAINTS & ACCESSORIES
Rags
Bar of soap (perfume and fragrance free)
Soft bristle toothbrush
Mixing cups
Good quality paint brushes
The following Acrylic Jo Sonja paints were used for this carving:
Napthol crimson (Santa's Red hat)
Titanium white (Eyes, hats brim and pom-pom, eye highlights)
Warm white (Beard, mustache and head hair)
Skin tone base (Face)
Sapphire blue (Santa's eyes)
Carbon black (Pupils)
Pyrrole red (Blush marks)

    Excellent, I recall a video from you years ago, for a small item. Can't recall what it was, but the quality of explanation, and the clear video was superior, as was this.

    Would a butterfly knife work as well?

    Hi my apologies, I thought I replied to your comment a couple days ago. Yes, any knife with a recommended blade no longer then 5 inches would work BUT it has to be razor sharp. If you can slice a piece of paper using that knife, then it will work.

    I don't know whether you are aware of this but every 3-5 minutes there is a commercial break on this video. It is a fine instructional video but with all the interruptions it became unwatchable. After 25 minutes I had to turn it off. Something should be done about this. The frequency of commercials completely ruins the video.

    @@MisterSplinters Thanks! Yes, it's been corrected and I'm watching the rest of the video. Incidentally, great idea of inserting a picture of the final carving in the lower right hand corner. It's very helpful. You're the only one doing that. Thanks again.

    Thanks for the feedback ! Adding the Picture in Picture was my friend’s idea he will be happy to hear that you liked it. We will continue to do that in future videos.
