Looks great Lonny. I had such a great time doing all of those cuttings with you yesterday and showing you my methods for success with Jaboticabas. For anyone interested, the cuttings at the end were Red Hybrids. There are a few reasons why you would want to start from cuttings instead of from seeds. First, seeds are difficult to come by and a lot of the mail order seeds are either expensive or shipped without phytosanitary certificates, which means you're breaking the law importing them. Second, seedlings don't always germinate well especially after being baked in a shipping box. Third, starting from cuttings gives you a means to propagate the plants from pruning which would just wind up in your compost pile otherwise. Fourth and last, cuttings are genetically identical clones from the mother plant they came from. If you have a superior plant that's either really growing well, fruiting well or has some other desirable trait, it enables you to make genetic clones of the parent plant. The acidity helps neutralize the basic pH value in the sap. My guess for why Jabos do this is for rapid healing if they become bent, broken or damaged. Being in a very hot environment, they would want to have their bark heal as quickly as possible to prevent evaporation of the plant. Great for healing, not so great for root development. With regards to the rooting hormone. Is it necessary? No. Rooting hormone won't force any plant to root, but it will encourage strong rooting and increase the odds at rooting success. But, if the plant isn't happy about it's soil, it's pH and it's overall environment it won't root. It'll just dry out, shrivel up and die. If you follow the steps we've outlined, keep things hydrated and in the shade, you should have successes with cutting your Jaboticabas.

Thanks a lot for this video; this is very interesting. I have a question. Since you are using current year's or last year's growth, how long will it take to get fruiting? Is it going to be faster than growing from seeds or not? How would that work? I am currently trying to close a >20 year Plinia coronata tree that took 19-20 years to fruit. I am wondering how long will it take to fruit if I take such young cuttings? Thanks for any tips or comments...
