    While I prefer the look of the older routines, I definitely think they made the right move by making the bars farther apart. Not only were the old routines very bad for the gymnast’s bodies, moving them apart led to so much progression in the sport that wouldn’t have been possible with the bars so close together.

    ??? Where is this idea coming from? The older style routines were not "very bad for gymnast's bodies". What does that even mean? What gave you this idea? What competitive gymnast do you know who suffered anything more than what gymnasts currently do? Yes, we got rips. But, moving the bars further apart would only fuel that problem, not solve it (as it's caused by friction and the current style causes faster moving routines, thus, greater friction on your hands from the bars, thus, a HIGHER frequency of rips not lower). I am curious to know why you are spreading these rumors. Have you ever considered finding out the truth of a matter before stating your opinion as if it were fact. The reason the bars were moved further apart is that it made doing giant-work (the big swing around the bar in a handstand position and associated skills) much easier. Then it was decided that fans wanted more swing and bigger release moves (not very safe for your body) like the Men's High Bar; so, they made the move to the permanent wide bar setting. They also liked this because changing the bars for each gymnast took up a lot of time. Now no wait for a bar setting and no noisy adjustment of the bars between routines. Is this safer? No, it's just different. It also makes for monotonous routines of Giants with a few pirouettes and high bar release moves. We rarely see multiple transitions from one bar to the other anymore, bc that takes an extraordinary amount of strength, energy, and endurance.

    I don't think the 'progression' was needed. It's just in imitations of men's High bar with a lower bar for decoration. The older bars were so much better, exciting and interesting, and had its own artistic element lost when they increased the space between the bars. Like someone else mentioned I don't think the women experiences any health issues from the belly bouncers. Honestly the routines and releases now are a lot more dangerous that previously, upon reading about it. Most gymnasts from the 70s say it didn't hurt at all and it was fun to do, the bar just had to be placed on right setting for their height and the skill had to be done correctly. Now that bars aren't adjusted for the gymnasts individually anymore the bars just got further apart for the sake of ease not safety. The low bar may as well be removed. (edit typo)

    Well, it is still painful. The area of your hips is probably the one of the most damaged (in my opinion) when you are on uneven bars. The bars and your hands because even with the especial thing we use (its a kind of gloves?, i dont know how to describe it, neither the name)😂, it still hurts a lot. Also your feets get hurted a lot. All elements, even if time have passed and it improved, are still painful and really hard to execute. I think UB is probably the most harder and painful element of artistics gymnastic (like really, i have a lot of marks in my hips) (sorry for my bad english♡)

    Because a lot of those old moves were "too dangerous" so they had to ban them for the "safety" of the girls. Girls (and boys) getting into gymnastics know what they're getting into once they reach a certain level (that is, anything beyond challenging friends to how many cartwheels they can do in a row!)...to not expect newer, more difficult moves has dulled the sport - in ALL events, not just the uneven bars. It sucks. You can walk down the street and get hit by a car for Pete's sake...OBVIOUSLY gymnastics is a dangerous sport...but that's why these girls (and guys) have top level coaches, not just the local gym owner down the street who can't even do a handstand themselves!

    I so much greatly agree with the people here who say the old bar routines were much much more interesting, varied, and diverse than present bar routines. In the last many years, every single women's bar routines look the same. Dull cookie cutter bar routines, even if they are doing hard things. No diversity. No individuality. All the moves look alike. Nothing new. And present bar routines go so fast you cant even see anything. Give me the old bar routines any day. Olga Korbut was so terrific. She cared about being and looking different and unique. Her Korbut move on bars was so beautiful. I loved old bars. And the bars were closer together which made for some very interesting moves between high and low bars. I love the whipping between bars. And you could see each move so vividly in the old bar routines. The skills were different, beautiful and clealy demarcated so you could really see the body in the motions and technique extremely well. I miss those gymnasts and those routines so so much.

It does seem like a lot of the same things done by different people with little individual personality...i believe that's why that college gymnasts floor routine went viral. You should put a note that many of these skills are super dangerous and also illegal in competition. Some have become paralyzed because of the moves where you stand on the upper bar.

    Hi, question. Is the uneven bar the one that has gone through the most changes. Thanks!

  • @maurened5969
    @maurened59694 жыл бұрын

    . No one is criticizing modern day gymnasts when they talk about routines from the 70's or 80's. The gymnasts now are doing skills ten times harder then before and each decade the difficulty got tougher and tougher and the girls had to get stronger and stronger. The difference is, the rules gave them more leeway back then for more individual creativity and variety. The code of points was different. They didn't stop doing flying hip circles because people hurt themselves, it's because the advanced gymnasts started doing giant swings on the high bar and the more that became the norm, the more they started making that the standard and they pushed the bars apart. It is SO much harder now. In my best years back then, I could never do what the girls do now. I have mad respect for today's gymnasts. I just wish the rules would give them more options for creativity.
