I live in Florida, USA and have a co-worker with a cockney accent. She told me that a lot of people here somehow mistake it for an Australian accent. I have to admit hearing a cockney accent in person is an odd experience for me. It's a pretty 'extreme' accent to my American ears and you only hear it in television and movies over here, making it seem almost fictional.

I miss my Yorkshire accent but moving to north west England at a young age changed it. Geordie accent is pretty difficult but similar to certain pronunciations that southerners use. There’s at least 40 completely different accents in the uk, 10 miles down the road some could be speaking completely different, especially Birkenhead and Liverpool or Glasgow and Edinburgh, close but very different

This is hilariously brill. As a Northern Irishman, I lived in London for 27 years and from day one I imitated the cockney accent for a laff, to be heard, to join in and in the end no one would believe me when I spoke in my usual northern Irish brogue. I fooled the fecking lot of them, makes me chortle even now 7 years after leaving.

Cockney has been around longer than Boston has mate. Where do yiz think the Bostoners got their accents? mix of English and Irish. however, being from Ireland, when I go to Boston, no one there sounds Irish at all. Unless they're also from Ireland

It’s amazing how many of these are the same in Australian, we even have rhyming slang. For many years I thought Australian copied many things from cockney but it’s interesting if you look into the history of the Australian accent, many of the original convicts were poor cockneys. Over time the rhyming slang became unique to Australia, so it wasn’t copied it evolved from cockney. So to ‘take a look’ in original cockney was butchers hook, and down under it changed to captain cook. I think if Jason S or Michael Caine or Danny Dyer etc were to try the Australian accent they would probably nail it, and it’s not easy to do well

Cockney accent (that was spoken by my first ever customer) almost made me quit my first job as a helpdesk agent as a non native English speaker. :D Nowadays I am fine with various accents: Scottish, Irish, even Australians, but still have hard times understanding cockney.
