How did you learn Portuguese? I’ve been studying Portuguese for 9 years now and I’ve visited Brasil 18 times and I practice every day with my girlfriend who only speaks Portuguese and we’ve been practicing for 6 years now but I still can’t converse or read and I have to translate everything into English to understand. It’s frustrating. I’ll visit Brasil for a month but I won’t be able to understand what people are saying.

Quando ligo as legendas em inglês do KZread elas encobrem as suas. Séria ótimo ver as duas ao mesmo tempo pra fazer comparação! Obrigado, vou ficar te devendo...

Ill listen to Brazilian shows with the subtitles on and Ive notice older shows speak very different from current shows like Fuze or Ela por Ela. Can anyone explain why that is?

I believe that the main difference is the changes in our society, for example many slang words were introduced with the arrival of the internet and social networks. There may also be differences due to the audience of each soap opera. Here in Brazil, soap operas are something very important and are part of the culture. So we have different types of soap operas for each audience, for example, Malhação was a teen soap opera that was showed on tv at 5pm. Elas por elas is a remake of an old soap opera and airs at 6pm for an older audience as the majority of Brazilians are still working. At 7pm, they are usually more comical soap operas, they usually have a more fanciful plot, as in the case of fuzué (mess) at 9pm it's prime time, it's a soap opera that seeks to address something current in Brazilian or global society, it's the flagship - it can bring themes such as land disputes, environmental problems, corruption, betrayal or something new and interesting such as the presentation of a different culture (o clone, caminho das indias) Furthermore, the soap opera may represent a region with accents and influences from other more pronounced languages ​​- Amazonia, there will be more indigenous languages, southern Brazil - Italian or German, northeast African language and so on. So it is difficult to say what and why there is this difference in language.
