How to study Korean and Go Billy Korean are my favorite resources. They both explain grammar in ways that are very easy to understand but are still in depth enough to actually be helpful. And How to study Korean gives so much useful vocab. I also agree about TTMIK not being my favorite, even though so many people swear by it. I think it can be helpful as a supplemental resource, like their podcasts or watching videos on random topics, but after doing the first few books I just don't like their course as a primary resource. You mentioned that they don't give extensive explanations, but another thing I found frustrating is the excessive use of romanization. It makes it so hard to force your brain to read in Korean when the romanization is right under the sentence you're trying to read, so I felt like my reading skills were stunted when using those books on top of not having enough grammar practice to remember things long term.

I have been learning Korean for almost a year and I still cant speak sentences but I can understand like half of what is being said. Like if i am watching a Kdramam I understand a lot and dont have to use the captions but I cant make sentences. I know some people have different speeds they learn. Hopefully soon I will be able to speak it well and have conversations.

@@Alena-cq1ze ik u didn't actually ask me but I feel like they leave out "in depth stuff". That happens to be one way I can place it. Like for example they'd explain the basic vowels but wouldn't explain the three "elements" that make them (horizontal line, vertical line and the circle or short line i:e earth, man, sun) or even how they are formed (the yin , yum etc) they wouldn't explain who made korean, how, why and what parts are borrowed from Chinese and English and how all of it matters As a beginner you wouldn't know the difference of not knowing but little things like this make a huge difference

The lessons are really long & rn I’m in a busy period of life (doing a boot camp to career switch, new job etc), so sometimes when I want to study but don’t have a lot of time I’ll do a TTMIK lesson, but in my opinion, howtostudykorean is superior- it’s so incredibly detailed yet explores complex concepts in an easily digestible way.

I started Korean on Duolingo (I know I know…) like 1 and a half months ago for fun and I’m racing through so quickly but because that just really doesn’t do the job I’ve always substituted with additional grammar and vocab resources. I’m just now getting more serious about it and I want to switch to other free resources for good, the amount that is available is so overwhelming though! I obviously can’t use every single one at the same time and I’m having a hard time right now choosing a few for a good study routine. If anyone has any recommendations, please hit me up :D Also English isn’t my first language but since the English based resources are just enormously better than German based resources I am gladly twisting my brain learning a foreign language IN a foreign language lol. I’m sure some of you know this struggle

Thank you so much for reccomending Yonsei University's free courses! I'm taking the beginner course now that teaches you hangeul. I'm trying it (for learning hangeul specifically) alongside LingoDeer and another youtube channel and I've found the Yonsei course to be by far the most helpful of the three! I love how they provide pdfs you can print and use to practice after each lesson.. Really great suggestion I wouldn't have found otherwise. Thank you!

Girl.... thank you so much for this video. I’ve been wanting to learn Korean for the past 6 months and have been learning a few things here and there with scattered resources but I haven’t gotten very far. If I’m being honest, I’ve thought about giving up several times because I just didn’t really know where to go that wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg. I’m so grateful that you took the time to let us know about all these free resources! You truly inspire me and have reignited my desire to learn Korean. So let’s go!!! I’m giving it another shot! Thanks again 💜😊

thank you so much for these recommendations! i mainly use how to study korean and their memrise courses for vocab~ another resource i genuinely can’t recommend enough is korean with miss vicky: each grammar point is so clear and explained in enough detail, there’s lots of examples and she also does live classes where she teaches grammar or dissects things like social media posts/lyrics etc. she’s really worth checking out!
