I almost exclusively use Vallejo Black airbrush primer with no zenithal. The only time I use a zenithal is on a detailed mini where the detail can get lost in a sea of black. However if I’m going for a retro eavy metal paint job then it’s a very light grey almost white primer. I feel this really makes the colours a lot more vibrant.

The colour of the primer makes a massive difference, I really struggled to paint yellow over black primer. Instead wraithbone primer works better with yellow armour. The temperature of the primer can makes a difference, if it’s too cold or too windy or humid outside, then the primer can end up being to blotchy or grainy. A friend said you should stick the primer can up your jumper for 10 to 15 minutes so your bodyheat warms the can up. I take it a bit further my relaxing under a duvet with the primer can to warm the can up while I watch a few KZread vids. Another way of doing zenithal highlighting is to use a rattle can of black primer then dry brush a small amount of white or grey paint over the raised areas of the model.

If you look after your models you don’t need to use much. It’s not worth the risk of clogging up details. A very very light spray is enough. Also zenithal with spray cans is more than likely going to clog up details especially for someone inexperienced with spray cans

What do you think about cheaper aftermarket sprays or sprays from normal paint shops, are they acryl or oil based, there's is not much info on cans. In most cases they are universal for wood metal and plasti materials and they cover very nice but I'm not sure about paint sticking to them.

If you're going to look into different sprays, you'll want to make sure they are either acrylic or they will say primer on them, other wise you'll find they're lacquers. I know people use Halfords sprays

Hello There! Following up from the Tau commander video i checked out this one and following step by step i've managed to get the result that you have at 3:50, the problem is that my primer partly came off from a slight touch which i presume is because the paint itself is faulty since i've painted at 20 C after 3 minutes of shaking and 1 hour of drying. Also i've wanted to ask did you sand the white miniature between 3:50 and 4:40 or something? It looks a lot better then after priming.

If you're in a position where you can't spray for whatever reason, I have long felt Stynylrez primer from Badger is the best brush-on primer - at least black and grey. White still needs to be airbrushed for effectiveness. The other two however, go on incredibly well with a brush and harden to a perfect surface.

I would use chaos black for vehicles and things like mega knobs if they have a lot of black armour.

I had no issue with using sprays in the winter, but it just got a lot drier and hotter here in Japan and I did some of the new tyranids from the ultimate set... I wish I had not. The models themselves have too many small details and the spray clogs it even if you are careful. For that range of models, I will not use a citadel spray again for the base. A very light primer from a different company may be fine. Citadel base spray... no don't use it in temperatures above 26 degrees. It just dries too fast and leaves terrible detail damage.

I'm gonna assume these have been mixed with thinners or are they spray based? if you are mixing them with thinners, sometimes the thinner can effect how that primer performs, especially if its a different brand. Thanks 😃 I’m in the habit of using wraithbone. I like that creamy off white colour. I recon people like certain colours because they prefer how the different paints look on it

One thing that I never see talked about is those hard to reach recesses/places. I always spend an hr or so on a unit afterwards getting those places by hand. Otherwise if I try to do it using the spray can it goes on too heavy and ruins the model. Does anyone else have this problem?

  • @TableTopReadyYoutube

honestly, I never manage to get every nook and cranny, but I find the over spray tends to be good enough and you're able to paint on on it regardless :D

@@TableTopReadyKZread thanks, sounds like I’m spraying the right amount then. I usually have this issue more when my base coat is the same colour as my primer so need it all fully covered. I find a wash or contrast though tends to cover any small areas I’ve missed. Because of this sometimes I do feel I waste a bit of time getting it fully covered before my wash/contrast so still experimenting with what’s best. The one thing I really want to avoid though is over spraying and losing detail. I tend to struggle with this a bit when spraying. Probably wouldn’t be such an issue with an airbrush. Great video!

Anyone else having a hard time getting leadbelcher to cover properly? Tried priming my dreadnought and all i get are speckles of metal and clogged details. I did prime it with mechanicum grey a month or so ago and decided i didnt want to try painting all the metal with a brush. Not sure if its me or if leadbelcher being a metallic paint makes it more finicky.

The leadbelcher should behave the same as other sprays. If your finding it building up then try moving the can more as you spray in short bursts. Make sure it’s really well shaken. Less is more with leadbelcher as well.

Just get something bigger to stick more things to? The way to spray them is the same, your just spraying more miniatures. If you really doing a lot and want to do them quickly then don’t build them in sub assemblies. But everything I do is the same when I spray a larger amount of minutes as well.

If you're doing large numbers of minis, best to assemble them all in full and blu-tack them onto 1 side of a rule/long stick (you could literally do 4-8 in a row) and spray them all together. Might need to separate them and finish off spraying each of them into the more concealed sides/underparts, but you could easily spray a large unit of models in the space of an afternoon.

this could be for a lot of reasons, its just gonna be a bit of trial and error. a lot of the time this is because the paint is drying too fast before it hits the miniatures. make sure its shaken and maybe spray a bit closer to the miniatures.I can only show you best practice

I prime my miniatures… I paint them. The paint just seems to scratch off so easy with my fingernail. Whereas, I’ve bought miniatures already painted off eBay, and they don’t look varnished, but you’d have to practically take some vapour to those suckers to get the paint off. I don’t understand where I’m going wrong ?

I’d definitely use rattle can primer, the water-based ones aren’t as good imo. Once the mini’s finished I sometimes varnish them in water-based Vallejo gloss and then go over them with Vallejo clear varnish. If they’re going to be used a lot in games, this really stops the paint coming off. The gloss varnish is tough stuff!

Citadel spray is NOT primer, it may contain some primer like a house paint does, but it is not a proper primer. Actual primer serves a real purpose. Also Priming and Undercoating are two different steps.
