Learn How To Draw Pt 5: Understand How Shading Works

Without light and shadow there is no form. If you haven't thought about how shading creates 3D form then this lesson is for you. In this easy drawing tutorial for beginners we'll cover shading basics by practicing shading with only three values, highlight, mid-tone and shadow. If you can understand what to look for when you are shading and how light hits an object, you'll be better prepared to build a successful finished drawing.
This free drawing lesson covers:
• how to sketch and shade objects
• how to quickly shade an object
• how light and dark values create a sense of form
This lesson is a really a precursor to learning to shade. We wont be covering blending or layering but instead we'll focus on the bare basic values you need to see and shade to create 3D form.
MATERIALS:
• Sketchbook
• 2H - 2B pencils
• eraser

Thanks so much ! Your lessons are amazing so far the best that I have seen ❤ For the first time in my life after several courses and classes I took even in prestigious schools , it’s the first time I understand how shading works !😊.It’s so nice of you as un artist to be able to put yourself in a place of someone that doesn’t have a clue of what shading means like me 😅 And you explain step by step, how amazing is this!🙏🏻❤ The way you teach it’s so enjoyable and friendly, and you calm and beautiful voice is just a pleasure to listening 😊

Hi. Emily does it matter if the grades of the pencils are of different brands? I have 2H & 2B, but they are different brands. Thanks

  • @ThePencilRoomOnline

Good question and no it doesn’t matter if the pencils are different brands. The 2H should still be lighter than the 2B and that’s the main thing.

I’d suggest keeping loose and light for now, it can almost just be a soft pencil scribble with a bit of smudging. Don’t focus on it at the expense of the object itself! Another shading lesson coming next :)

The shading I understand, but I still can't see where the cast shadow goes. I will continue to practice, and try to "see" where the shadow goes. Thank you for the video.

Hi Sharon, The cast shadow will be more or less visible depending on how strong the light is (same with the form shadow). It will be easier to see if you place an object on a white piece of paper next to a window or a light. Try moving it closer and further from the light to see how the cast shadow changes. It does take time to learn to see the shadow as a shape that you can translate on to your page. The easiest way to see it is to squint at your subject as much as you can to eliminate the detail. Look for shapes of dark for the cast shadow and the form shadow and sketch the shapes lightly on the page before shading them. Its always good to put these things into action so I’d recommend setting up a simple object next to a light, move it around and do some quick 2 minute sketches just to practice seeing and drawing shadow shapes!
