They no longer sell the Haoge Monopod Head with Panning base on amazon but I found an alternative brand that looks very similar to what I use: amzn.to/2ihNriJ
Sunwayfoto is another option as well with really good reviews: amzn.to/2iim6gn

Milky Way Panorama quick tips:
-Level your tripod
-Pivot from your lens not the camera
-Use a panning base with 360° markings
-Start with wide angle lenses for easier stitching
- Give yourself plenty of overlap to increase your chance of a successful overlap
- Use a remote or timer mode to reduce shake and blurry pictures

    The king of Milky Way panoramas - Axel Mellinger, his most recent, digital, using a 50mm lens. www.milkywaysky.com. He did one back in film days using (I think) an 800mm f4 Vixen reflector, but I can't find any working links to it. That was a stunning picture. There is a thumbnail of it at the top of the page here: galaxy.phy.cmich.edu/~axel/Astrophotography/images.html#primefocus I know this is an entirely different kind of photograph, but you might find it interesting. If I am right about the 800mm Vixen, he used lot of film... I saw it in an Astronomy magazine, quite a few years ago.

    I used my widest lens so there was some wonk in the stars in some spots but it's decent for a first try while there were coyotes howling everywhere. I guess I should use a slightly tighter lens and shorter exposure but that would give me less detail and more grain. And I don't feel like using the awful kit lens I have. I'll have to search around for some better lenses for this.

    Very nicely done, learned a lot! Would you say the light of the lighthouse creates a strong source of light pollution, washing out the milky way? Or do you reckon it's of very little effect on the captured images?

  • @Milkywaymike

    @Milkywaymike

    3 жыл бұрын

    Losfame-studio Thanks for watching!! It’s an ultra wide lens focused at infinity so even at 2.8 everything will be in focus (relatively speaking). If you stop the lens down to F4 or more it will be sharper but then you have to increase ISO or shutter speeds to compensate for the lack of light. Nikon 14-24 is a great lens so it’s still pretty sharp even at F2.8.

    Hey Mike Can you use the set up in the video (panning base, tilt monopod and nodal slide rail) to do multi row panoramas or do I need the full blown set up with the vertical bracket etc. like the Nodal Ninja panoramic head for example. Thanks for the video, really well done.

  • @Milkywaymike

    @Milkywaymike

    This setup will allow you do pull off multi row panoramas of the Milky Way. I've done a couple multi row panoramas with this setup, however the stitching software must be able to handle it. Typically lightroom does fairly well with stitching panoramas however I had problems with lightroom as the number of rows increased so I had to use PTGUI. Make sure you get close to finding the nodal point of your lens which will make stitching a lot easier.

    Fantastic tutorial! Thanks Mike! I always have a question about how do you stack images to reduce noice if you shoot milky way panorama, is this even doable?

  • @Milkywaymike

    @Milkywaymike

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yes its very doable but very time consuming. I've done several techniques... Option 1: Take a set 3 or 4 photos at a higher iso and shorter exposure of 15 seconds. Then use starry landscape stacker for each set of images. Once you stacked each set then you merge all the stacked images as a panorama and you will have a cleaner milky way pano. Option 2: (easier option for a cleaner pano) Take one set of pano images at your typical settings which you will use this mainly for the sky. Then take another set with a longer shutter and lower ISO which you will use for a cleaner foreground. Blend the 2 panoramas in photoshop Option 3: Take one pano set for the foreground at a lower iso and longer shutter or stack several images. Then use a star tracker and create a milky way panorama. Blend the tracked sky with the stacked foreground and this will give you the absolute cleanest milky way panorama possible.

    I know it's a bit late. But I don't see anyone talking about star and nebula trails coz I magine those things will be moving and changing position while you take 4-6 shots at 15-20 seconds of exposure. How does Lightroom deal with that? Sorry if it's a stupid question, I've taken tons of milky way shots, just not panoramas and one of the things I'm always conscious about it's not raising the shutter speed any slower than 20s due to earth and stars rotation

    Mike, I live in the Midwest and am driving to Phoenix this Monday. I want to give some astrophotography a try while out that way. Saw your vids. Great work! On this one, where did you focus and what was your aperture setting. It looks like the patio/walk and lighthouse are pretty sharp. I am thinking you did not shoot this wide open like all the youtube vids recommend. Can you touch on that? Thanks, Bob

  • @Milkywaymike

    @Milkywaymike

    6 жыл бұрын

    Bob P thanks!! I was focused at infinity, at 14mm wide f3.2 Shutterstock 20 seconds iso 5000. Ultra wide lenses can capture a lot in focus even wide open. My Nikon 14-24 is really good corner to corner wide open..., that’s why it costs an arm and a leg lol. Tamron 15-30 is arguably just as good for half the price

    SO lightroom has no problem stitching the pano with the sky moving and the land stationary? I thought this would require some special software. I was surprised you got a nice sky straight out of the pano merge from lightroom. Taking 13 20sec shots this would lead to the stars moving quite a bit in that time period.
