In this German lesson, you will learn and practise simple dialogues for everyday life. You'll practise important words and phrases while also practising sentence structure and grammar. This German lesson also serves as pronunciation training for the German alphabet, which is used to spell the German language. It is used in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg, as well as in countries with German-speaking minorities such as Belgium (Eupen and Malmedy), Denmark (North Schleswig), Italy (South Tyrol) and Poland (Upper Silesia).
For many native speakers of a language with a different script, learning to read and write German is the most important part of learning German. Don't worry! Learning a new alphabet is easier than it first seems. Here are 3 steps that will help you:
1) First, look at all the letters that are identical to your alphabet or native language. This is just like a mnemonic. Mnemonics are also an excellent technique for learning vocabulary.
2) You will be able to memorize letters much faster if you see them in a word. This way you see the letter directly in context with other letters. This makes it much easier to learn letters than if you only see them individually.
3) You should also write in script. This will help you learn the alphabet even faster. You will improve your reading and writing skills.
Start writing with your smartphone or computer.
This is good to start with as you don't have to draw the letters yourself. Drawing the letters will take a little more practice at the beginning than typing.
It doesn't seem so easy at first. You have to learn to read all over again. Just like at school.
The German alphabet is an extension of the Latin alphabet. In today's standardized usage, it includes the 26 basic letters of the Latin alphabet, the three umlauts (Ä, Ö, Ü) and the eszett (ß). In Switzerland and Liechtenstein, however, the ß is no longer used today (ss is written instead). The capital Eszett (ẞ) was only added to the German alphabet in the 21st century.
